This is a well kept hometown secret. A hole in the wall that serves the one of best home cooked fried chicken. A friend who grew up in Charlottesville recommended that I stop in (he knows I love good tasty food... thanks Kevin). Make sure you stop in and taste this old school fried chicken offering that's served by the friendliest people.

Chicken by the Piece Mac and Cheese Potato wedges

Brown's was the first stop in my September Chicken Crawl 2k20! Living in Cville for a significant amount of time, I've heard about Brown's fried chicken from friends and fellow foodies. As I never got around to actually trying their chicken, why not start the journey there! Located on Avon St, Brown's is situated a mere 5 min drive from Downtown Cville. While the physical location does not have outdoor seating, customers can enjoy their chicken in the neighboring Belmont Park (literally the next street over). I got a box of chicken (which came with a couple of rolls), breaded potato wedges, and mac'n'cheese.  Crunch - Decent, slight crunch. Not heavy on the breading (which I really appreciated).  Flavor - Really well seasoned, not too salty. From breading to actual meat, everything is well balanced. Not spicy.  Succulence - Nice and juicy~ Each piece was perfectly cooked! Heartburn - Pleasantly not oily at all. Everyone who came with me was able to eat multiple pieces without their stomachs feeling uncomfortable afterwards.  How good does it taste cold? - Chicken retains juiciness despite being cold. Hot take, thought it tasted even better cold.  Sides - Chicken paired well with all the sides. Potato wedges were DELICIOUS. Surprisingly, the potato wedges had more crunch than the chicken, but I'm not mad about it. Mac'n'cheese was nice and cheesy, noodles didn't stick to each other. Loved that it was flavored with pepper. The rolls were fluffy and soft. Definitely recommend dipping it in the mac'n'cheese.  Overall, I get the hype! Not realizing that gas station chicken was a thing, I didn't know what to expect, but Brown's was an amazing gastronomical experience!

    My chicken meal.

Please Ignore The Following Reviews: 1. People who have not tried the food. The chicken is not dried out, it is crispy, savory, and delicious. The sides are all excellent. If you arrived late or near closing time, I suggest you come around lunch time. Leaving a negative review because you couldn't or wouldn't eat here is problematic to places that work hard to put out a quality product. 2. People who don't enjoy chicken. Yes, people have told me they don't like Brown's because they don't eat meat. Great. 3. People disgusted with its location. Yes, it's in a gas station. That is part of this location's appeal; it's a genuine hole in the wall. The food tastes great and they wouldn't be allowed to operate if they were dirty, which, in my opinion, they aren't. 4. People irritated at how a manager is speaking to a customer. I get it, this can irritate me, too. But 1 star? Get out of town. I've been going here for years, and the old and new management has been nothing but kind to the people I've seen order. This, along with Wayside Chicken and Mel's Cafe, is some of the absolute best fried chicken in Charlottesville. Best of all, it's affordable! Please support this place, spread the word, and learn what the hype it all about.

Nice courteous staff and awesome chicken. Love this place! If you buy 10 gallons of gas at their new stylish pumps you are rewarded with 1 free piece of chicken. Hot dern, insert fire emojis.

Inexpensive and decent fried chicken. Not great even when I was super hungry. Too salty though for my taste.

I tried the Babyback Ribs and Fried Chicken Soul Sandwiches. The Babyback Ribs were really good. The ribs are taken off the bone for the soul sandwich and plated on slices of potato rolls. The Fried Chicken was good but not the best I've had in Charlottesville. I would have liked the outside to be crispier. The cornbread that comes with the order was also good. It was not traditional cornbread-- it tasted like carrot cake corn bread. The Mac and Cheese was a little too overcooked for my liking. However, for the meat sandwich and two sides were a large portion and cost 12 dollars which was awesome. Overall, Soul Food Joint is a charming locally owned soul food place downtown. It wasn't the best fried chicken or barbecue that I've had in Charlottesville, however the food was good and the portions were great for the price.

Server (Brianna) started out good, fairly attentive until I got my food. After I got my food I got one cursory "all good?" and that was it until I got the bill. Anyway, on to the food: ordered two meat plate (brisket and pulled pork) with fries and coles slaw. Fries were the highlight of the meal. Hot, crispy, seasoned...awesome. Cole slaw was good....but it was super tangy (vinegary) for my taste. Don't get it wrong, it was good, just hard to eat all of it thanks to the tang. On to the meat. Got a pretty good sized pile of pulled pork and a couple slices of brisket. Both meats were lukewarm at best. Pork was dry (thank goodness for the NC vinegar sauce). The brisket made up for the porks dryness, it was extra greasy and extra fatty. Like, for real, do you think people are going to eat the fat layer between the lean point meat and the fatty upper meat? Yeah, not me. But since the brisket was also lukewarm (more like lukecold) it really didn't make a difference. I did think the Vision BBQ sauce tasted pretty good. If Brianna would have come back by after I got my meal I would have sent it back....and probably would have just left without worrying over a replacement, or a comp, or anything. Secondary issue: went to the mens room. It was just nasty. You get once shot to make an impression, and this one was not good. Would not/will not repeat.
