Mac & Cheese
Sherrie K.

I took a day trip to Charlottesville and decided to stop here after seeing the reviews. The place has that old school charm. It looks like a place that people have enjoyed for years and I immediately wanted to try it. The lady at the counter was very friendly and helpful. I ordered my food to go and it was ready in less than 5 minutes. I decided to stop at a park and eat and everything was hot. The chicken had well seasoned crispy skin. The mac n cheese, however, tasted like the stouffers frozen kind. I, also wasn't a fan of the collard greens due to their lack of flavor. Next time I come back I'll try some different side but decimates the fried chicken.

Womp womp. Wayside has fallen off in the last few years. This has kinda been a trend with some staples on JPA unfortunately. I was hoping wayside would be spared but no such luck. The Mac and cheese is not good, and the rolls are just store bought king's Hawaiian or similar. The green beans are fine, but kinda just from a can style. Nothing to write home about. I like the collard greens but these are just ok. Mashed potato's are basically the powder in a box kind with plain gravy. So basically all of the sides are super generic. The chicken itself used to carry the meals. Now it tastes a little bit blander and drier than it used to. Really sad bc I remember it being juicy hot and very seasoned. At this point I think browns is the best in cville. Overall it's a decent spot to get fried chicken, just generic.

Everything here is amazing especially the breakfast biscuits. And the food is so cheap. I highly recommend

We decided to stop here after visiting the apple orchard nearby. This place was not only pretty cheap it was delicious! I got a bbq plate and everything about it was good. They also have all types of bbq sauce you can choose from for your food which is nice! Will be back

Delicious and CHEAP fried chicken. We also loved the hushpuppies, cornbread, & fries. Mac & cheese isn't the best in town, but regardless it was demolished. Catering is awesome--we had a large order so they loaded everything into my car themselves. Also, their special sauce was quite delicious on everything.

Don't know why it's taken me so long to checkout Wayside when I live so close to it. I tried their 2 pc with 1 roll and a small side of fries. The fries definitely surprised me with how perfectly crispy yet fluffy on the inside they were. They were also seasoned perfectly, tempting me to grab another as I ate my chicken. My chicken was hot, fresh, and as expected juicy and flavorful. Wayside chicken is what you expect from good southern fried chicken. We visited near closing so my friend who ordered an 8 pc was given 2 complimentary pieces which was very nice of them to do! Because of the nature of fried chicken, I don't think I would have been able to eat more than 2 or 3 pieces before hitting a limit. I would recommend getting some of their sides along with the chicken to add variety.

AVOID their chicken tenders. I bought them twice. Mistake! They are a tough a show leather. Plus, they have a bad attitude.

Our kids loved the fried chicken. I enjoyed the baked since I'm Gluten free. It was nice and moist. Great service and friendly staff.

Really, really good and down home food. Casual atmosphere and quick service most of the time. You gotta try it if you haven't.

Burgers are awesome!!! Four stars because the chicken could use more seasoning. But I'll go back for the cheeseburger anyway.

Fried dark meat chicken is the best. Not the super thick fried bread coating you usually find at chains!!

They offer Ralph Sampson branded clothing for sale. Very clean inside and out with a patio. We tried the burgers, which had nice, thick patties. Mashed potatoes were made fresh. We heard the Brussel sprouts were so popular that they were sold out. We will have to try it next time. Service was attentive and friendly. This is a family friendly restaurant. If you aren't a native Virginian, you may not know that Ralph Sampson was a well known basketball player who attended the University of Virginia and was the NBA Rookie of the Year in 1984.

Unfortunately, the restaurant has gone downhill. Our group was seated near the kitchen entrance and there is a large opening where patrons can see parts of the kitchen. As soon as we sat down, I immediately noticed the floor and the many smashed french fries on the floor just inside the kitchen entrance, clearly visible to customers. The employee standing amongst the filthy floor didn't seem to mind until 30-40 minutes later when he was told to clean the floor up. The food was just average. My bacon cheeseburger was on a soggy bun which ruined the burger for me. The waiter was very nice and relatively attentive; however, he gave people in the small group the incorrect food, but corrected it when reminded. After lunch, as we walked out, a few of us said without prompting, "this place has gone downhill". It's too bad because it is a nice sports bar and good place to watch a game. Hopefully, management will get things corrected and back to where the restaurant was in 2022.

The Babyback Ribs were really good. The ribs are taken off the bone for the soul sandwich and plated on slices of potato rolls. The Fried Chicken was good but not the best I've had in Charlottesville. I would have liked the outside to be crispier. The cornbread that comes with the order was also good. It was not traditional cornbread-- it tasted like carrot cake corn bread. The Mac and Cheese was a little too overcooked for my liking. However, for the meat sandwich and two sides were a large portion and cost 12 dollars which was awesome. Overall, Soul Food Joint is a charming locally owned soul food place downtown. It wasn't the best fried chicken or barbecue that I've had in Charlottesville, however the food was good and the portions were great for the price.

Total came out to approximately $60, not including tip. What's hot - Quality. Delicious. Hubby really liked their sweet potato fries. Slightly crispy on the outside, but soft and chewy on the inside. My portobello mushroom sandwich was delicious. Everything was well seasoned and the vegan cheese melted nicely with everything, which added to the flavor. Their coleslaw is listed on the menu as vinegar based, which it was and I enjoyed. Definitely a vinegar kick, but not overly so. We really enjoyed their chili cheese tots, which had a good amount of toppings, and was served warm. - Menu. Very good variety, especially vegan options. Dessert menu has vegan options, as well. - Price. Good value for money. It can cost less than $20 per person, unless you add drinks, appetizers, and/or dessert. - Service. Very good. Reliable and dependable. - Ambiance. Pretty cool that they have pinball games, video games, and a few board games and card games to play to keep you occupied. Be aware their pinball games and video games only take quarters, so you need cash. They have seating for groups of 2 up to 6. They also have scheduled events for the public, Iike trivia night. That they're open to all parts of the community, like LGBTQ, is visible and appreciated. - Parking. There are a few parking spaces in front of the restaurant. There's a larger parking lot behind the restaurant, which is helpful. What's not - Lighting. Indoor lighting is not the best, especially later in the day and when they have their curtains drawn. - Outdoor seating. On the one hand, it's nice to have outdoor seating. On the other hand, they have a sign that appears to indicate outdoor seating is self-serve, which can be inconvenient. Final answer Worth returning.
