We were visiting Charlottesville for the weekend and randomly came across this place while looking for a quick spot for brunch. The menu offered a wide selection of BBQ meats but it felt like the real money maker here was the biscuits since you should get any of their meats on a biscuit or just have it smothered in gravy. I ended up trying a little bit of everything because how could you not when everything on the menu sounded so good. The biscuits were much bigger than I thought but pleasantly surprised that they weren't as heavy which made it much more enjoyable when paired with the gravy or the meats. The sausage gravy could have used more salt and spices as it was pretty bland and mostly just tasted like butter. Unfortunately they were out of the brisket and pastrami which I was really looking forward to trying after reading all the reviews. We ended up with the pulled pork, Chorizo, and jerk chicken. Each portion came in 4oz servings so it was more than plenty for even the hungriest person. The chorizo patty by itself was a little dry and under seasoned which was strange because chorizo is usually pretty salty. The pulled pork had good smoky and salty flavor so I'd recommend that if you come across a limited menu offering like we did. The jerk chicken also came in a pulled/shredded version which was different than what I am used to/expecting which is whole pieces of chicken with the bone in. Hard, dry, crumbly (not in a good way) and tasted of uncooked flour (my guess from the rolling). The sausage gravy had no flavor but did have a weird kick. Like it needed more salt and pepper but was a little too spicy? (I don't know how they achieved that but they did) The macaroni and cheese was creamy and not dry and had good flavor...just not of cheese. It was more like southern pasta roni side dish---good but not to be confused with macaroni and cheese. This was my second attempt to visit Ace Biscuit and Barbecue. The first time, they were closed for renovations, and this time, I found out they're closed every Tuesday and Wednesday. Unfortunately, Google Maps still showed them as open, which was a bit frustrating. As I was about to leave, I saw a gentleman heading into the shop and asked him if they were closed. He confirmed they were and listened as I suggested updating their information online to prevent others from making the same trip in vain. I believe he was the Food and Beverage Manager. To my surprise, he asked what I was hoping to order. When I mentioned the pastrami, he told me to hang tight. Moments later, he came back with some pastrami for me to try. What began as a frustrating experience and a potential culinary heartbreak turned into something completely different. That small act of kindness and genuine customer service earned Ace Biscuit and Barbecue a lifelong customer. I pop in about every other month to visit family and stop by for the pastrami and the dirty Bird biscuits. I took a couple month hiatus and returned in September excited to enjoy both. I couldn't figure out what was missing but ordered the dirty bird which was still great. I was just reading reviews and realized the pastrami biscuit is off the menu. Decided on the Tommy Pastrami, with my egg over medium and no spicy brown mustard (I'm not a mustard fan). I really enjoyed the pastrami, which was tender and you could taste the smoky flavor. I was expecting the biscuit to taste better than it did (was just okay), but when eaten as a sandwich, it was pretty good. I also shared the fried green tomatoes, which were just okay. I wouldn't order them again, though. Pulled pork was also not bad. Could have used some more seasoning. Everyone working at Ace was friendly. You order up front and someone brings your order to you. First timers to this place last weekend. 11am arrival this past Monday. Had no idea what we were doing. The staff here are SUPER friendly, kind, and spirited. They clearly enjoy what they do. The menu has a variety of refreshingly different items. We all tried something different. I think the O'l Dirty Biscuit rocks (which is what I had), but the Brisket Biscuit melts in your mouth too. Turns out we were also able to dine-in! Thank you so much for accommodating us! We went to Ace biscuit and BBQ on October 23 however, when we got there, they were closing early for a special event. Seeing that we were disappointed, the staff went out of the way and above and beyond to accommodate us. They took time to prepare us brisket sandwiches with mac & cheese and coleslaw. TL;DR - ACE Biscuit and Barbecue serves up some of the BEST smoked meats in the entire state of Virginia. Anytime I see highly rated places on Yelp, I immediately wonder if there is massive hype going on, or if a restaurant is truly deserving of the praise from the Yelp community. Based upon my recent visit to Ace Biscuit and Barbecue, I can say this place is the proverbial "all that" and then some. Where to begin? First, I appreciate all the COVID-19 safety protocols. The main dining room is huge, so tables are spaced out so patrons who opt to dine in (like we did) are socially distanced. The high ceilings and HVAC system also allow for good airflow. During my 30 minute stay, I never felt uncomfortable about dining in with the other 3 tables (about 10 people). The staff are also all masked up, and there is plenty of hand sanitizer and pre-packaged sauces and condiments available. As for the food - AMAZING! It was late morning, so we opted for the build your own biscuit offering. Start with a fresh house made biscuit, egg (cooked anyway you like it) and then choice of meat (almost all prepared in house) - and all for $8...quite literally a STEAL! The country ham had that distinctive Virginia flavor of saltiness while still being tender. It was good with a dab of the "bold and spicy" bbq sauce. But the pulled pork biscuit was heavenly. I've mentioned this before, but having once lived in Austin, TX, I am a self-professed BBQ snob, and the guys at ACE can go toe-to-toe with BBQ coming out of the Lone Star state. The pulled pork was extremely juicy, had just enough salt/pepper seasoning, and terrific infusion of smoke flavor. It didn't need it, but I added some of the house cider mustard sauce which added a bit of spiciness. Everything was so tasty that I decided to order a pound of the pulled pork, a rack of ribs, and some brisket to go. As I was waiting for my order, the proprietor Brian Ashworth came out from the kitchen to chat for a few minutes. He explained that not only are they smoking all the meats on premises with a blend of hickory and oak logs, but they're also doing most of the butchering, as well as curing of items such as the Southern Breakfast sausage and chorizo. You gotta respect a place that puts such pride in the preparation of their bbq. Brian explained that once upon a time, ACE was located in a tiny storefront with one single table. With the awesome food they serve, I can see why they expanded to this larger space. BTW - all of the smoked meats were just as good over the next couple of days which I enjoyed from the comfort of my home. IMHO, it's definitely worth the 2.5 hour drive from DC to Charlottesville to savor some of the best 'cue in the entire DMV. read more

Sometimes simple is the best way to go. These guys are not fancy, but they flat out get the job done. I went with a biscuit with thick cut bacon, cheddar cheese and a sunny side egg. It was all perfect. Basically the best breakfast sammie you could possibly have. My wife did the same, but with chorizo. Also amazing. I've said it before, the best BBQ in Charlottesville! My absolute fave. The que is perfectly cooked, seasoned and fragrant (unlike some others who's que tastes like boiled smoked beef with no seasoning.) I eat this without barbecue sauce (and I LOVE sauce.) After we ordered at the front we waited a little over 30 minutes for the food. When it came out it wasn't super hot. We got brisket x2, pulled pork x2, and pulled chicken. The brisket and pulled pork were below average but not awful. Pulled chicken tasted expired and was sitting on a pool of juice. All of their bbq sauces were either vinegar based or spicy, which isn't for everyone. We got hash browns (which were hard and definitely frozen), mac and cheese (which was average), and a waffle (thin and made from a waffle mix). When I got there, they weren't busy at all, only one other customer inside. The gentleman working the counter was very friendly and helpful and described a few menu items to me, as well as how they made them. I like his description of making the gravy for the biscuits & gravy. I also like his description of the Tommy Pastrami, so I got both. The place is nicely done in an industrial theme with cool artwork on the walls. Their coffee is self-service and it's in a pump urn on the counter. The food was decent when I went... I really liked the smoke and spice on the pastrami, but it was on the dry side. The biscuits were interesting and square, but too thin and also slightly dry.
