You may think that anyone who actively elects to sit basking in smog and heat on 95 traffic in 100% humidity on a 2-wheeled death contraption that itself is radiating heat comparable to the surface of the sun may not be the soundest person to get insurance advice from, but here goes. I'd recently decided to get into motorcycles and like anyone who impulsively buys anything, I really hadn't considered the cost to insure said motorcycle. My quick "click or call" to a popular insurance company who shall go unnamed (but uses the voice of Jim Halpert from the Office to shout its tag line on cable tv) yielded results that were less than appealing - which is to say, the cost to insure the bike was going to be more than the cost of owning the bike. So now what - do I sell my mid-life-crisis-on-a-kickstand or fork out double the monthly payment of the bike to just be able to ride the thing (HOV may be free for bikes, but this was hardly a money-making venture). I had recently run into Nathan Klotz at a Panera where he unsuspecting became trapped in my "21-questions" version of insurance interrogation. "Can I get insurance on a bike that doesn't require my left arm as payment?" "Can I still bundle a bike and auto?" "Can you buy this bike from me - I've clearly made a mistake." All worries were laid to rest with his answer. "Listen Heather. Send me your current coverage. I'll see what I can do - no pressure. If we can help you get it cheaper, we'll do it. But I also want you to have the right coverage." I'm pretty sure Nathan is the 8th Avenger because frankly, he saved the day (and probably defeated Thanos). Not only was he able to find affordable coverage for the bike (bikes - this entire story ends up snowballing into more bikes, yes, I know, what?), he was able to beat my coverage for renters and auto to boot AND since this wasn't done with a robot online, he wrote the policies to have my best interests in mind (finally, someone looking out for my best interests because I'm certainly not). My boyfriend ended up getting bit by the bike bug too and Nathan once again was able to get the best coverage at the best price - he switched over auto as well. Long story short - Brown's Insurance Agency Inc. saved the summer, insured the bikes, and now I get to have helmet hair all the time - but with the money I saved, I'm able to fork over some cool hard cash for some much needed leave-in conditioner. I have been exploring homeowners insurance for the past few weeks, since my current insurance company greatly raised my rates this year for no discernible reason (haven't filed any claims etc). I was searching for a good independent insurance broker in the Northern Virginia area who could represent a large number of companies, and was encouraged when I spoke to an agent at Brown's who explained that they quoted 15 different insurance companies. Unfortunately it all went downhill from there. - The agent could not properly explain the product she was selling me - for example, I kept asking her what the sump pump overflow/water backup limit was, because the quote just said "policy limits." She kept telling me that the "policy limit" in this case was the limit of the dwelling (several hundred thousand dollars). I knew that couldn't be right, since water backup coverage is usually in the $2500/$5000/$10,000 range. Finally she sent me a brochure that cited that correct policy limit ($2500), but she still kept insisting it was the limit of the dwelling. Seriously, I know nothing about insurance, but I was able to read the literature and figure this out pretty quickly. - I asked the agent to explain an additional "premium" package that had been added onto the quote. She said it was "recommended" but couldn't say why. I kept asking her to send me the details, which she finally did, at which point I just figured it out myself. (And by the way, it was a useless package for my needs, for which they were trying to charge $60/year.) After a few of these frustrating email/phone exchanges I started calling other brokers/agents in the area to see if I could get better customer service, so we didn't communicate for a few days. But then, out of the blue, I got an INVOICE for a policy that this agent had quoted me, but which I had never authorized! She had gone ahead and told some insurance company to write a policy for me that I had never accepted. Maybe this is just one poorly-trained agent and the rest of the brokerage is great, but I would be wary in case this agent is representative of the general quality of the team. read more
