I injured my hand and stubbed my finger pretty bad playing basketball. Eventually I just couldn't play anymore. The problem wouldn't resolve until I did some bodywork with Bruce. He was able to focus on hand with both precision and specificity. The dude was dialed in. I think The sessions broke through the plateau I was stuck at in my rehab and sped up my recovery time. Your body stores your trauma. You hear this often enough to know it might be true, but how does that work? That car accident when you were 16, the time you fell and broke a bone, the various scrapes and bruises you experienced in life, even abusive relationships, or work situations, all of these things can imprint themselves on your body. For me it was a skiing accident, leaving one leg immobilized for 9 weeks while I was a growing and active young man, but it was also the drama and stress of late nights at the office, the years of working through my insecurities, all the to and fro that comes from an interesting active life. All of these things left their imprint on me. The trouble was, who do I see for them? Doctors and surgeons treat the immediate symptom (your back, your knee, your shoulder), but who treats your tendency to lean to your right when stressed? Who treats that limp which you still sometimes carry long after the joint has been healed? Who treats the slight imbalances and asymmetries that accumulate in your body over time? The trauma is not just in your knee or elbow or wrist, it is also lived in throughout your body. You slept with these injuries for years and years, until they became a part of you. It's not just the injury, but all the ways your body reacted to it, so that you might continue to work or sleep. That's not something that can be cut out. There aren't any drugs for this. Your body has survived your trauma, but it is not unscarred. If you had an imbalance in your emotional or intellectual state you could see a mental therapist, but who do you see for your body? Who will treat its trauma? This is essentially what Bruce does. He is a therapist for the trauma in your body. He will speak to your ills, your pains, your tendency to limp, to carry, or twist. He will speak to your body and help it recover from its long ordeal, to no longer store unneeded pain and anxiety, to free your body from its past, that you might move with more ease into the future. Seeing Bruce is a lot different for other medical professionals. It is similar to seeing a physical therapist, however, there is a "lived experience" part of this process as well. Remember it's not just the injury, but all the things your body does or has done to compensate for that injury that you have to deal with. This is the tricky part, The process is similar to seeing a mental therapist. There is work here, not just in your body, but how you use it, how it feels. Some things he suggests will sound fine, but others might seem deeply personal or emotional. This is the trauma talking. Some of your injuries will have taken years to establish, and your body might not be ready to let them go. The experience can feel very raw, and yet when it is over very cathartic. Your pain, your body's trauma, your movements are all highly individualistic. No single person moves like anyone else. Because of this, there is no single solution to your health. This is another aspect about working with Bruce. It feels more like a creative process, one of discovery, than seeing a regular medical professional. Together you will talk and think and move, and discover what works for you and what doesn't. He will not only speak to your body, but he will reach out to you, the person in the middle of your' body's trauma, and bring them comfort. Perhaps what Bruce does best is bring a much needed level of trust into your medical care. I have been playing sports all my life, and therefore have my fair share of injuries and body ailments. I've tried everything from traditional sports massage to physical therapy, and nothing has made a difference in my body like rolfing. In my opinion, Bruce is one of the best rolfers out there, and he has deep knowledge of body fascia and structural integration, along with over 20 years of experience. Structurally, I have a different and better body because of Bruce that I can see and feel. Bruce is great! Extremely knowledgeable about the body and how to address long standing dysfunctional "stuck" patterns. I herniated a disk in my neck several years ago and I have been working on healing and strengthening my neck and back since then. I have been able to work with Bruce to get more flexibility in my back, neck and hips that has improved my alignment and reduced my neck pain further than I had hoped possible. My sessions have be significantly more helpful those I have received from other body workers - they are worth the money. He has given me exercises to be able to make the most of my treatments with him, which I very much appreciate. Don't go to Bruce if you're recovering from serious surgery. His business model is too short to actual heal this type of client. Rolfing sessions had been designed for a ninety minute appointment, which gives a practitioner time to discover and respond to what has opened up in the body. Bruce has no time for this. He charges for a 50 minute window and therefore he can't really help certain clients. and he wasn't upfront or direct about this. He's too fast, too rushed and too expensive for what he offered me. read more

Bruce is a true super man at directly correcting injured muscle+nerve issues. This isn't for the light hearted massage. This is real sports medicine deep tissue work if you really want to cut loose those old, nagging sports injuries! I came in for a torn rotator cuff and plantar fasciitis relief. After one intense but properly focused visit the progress was dramatic. The muscles and nerves felt like they talked to each other for the first time in years. Wow, this is a wonderful experience. Bruce knows exactly where to press and exactly the right amount of pressure. He looks at the body as a whole and fine tunes each and every aspect. Bruce's work was, essentially, life changing. I had struggled terribly for months with what was diagnosed as costochondritis. Inflammation had turned into scar tissue, causing a lack of mobility throughout my chest, diaphragm area, side ribs, etc. Before I found Bruce it was hard to find anyone who felt they knew how to address the problem. Bruce listened carefully and immediately set to work trying things out. His excellence in listening, emphasis on communication between patient and practitioner, creativity, optimism, expertise and years of experience yielded outstanding results! His work totally transformed my body and gave me the belief that I could tackle my physical problems with patience and skilled and deliberate yet ultimately simple physical work (whereas before I felt like giving up). Bruce's approach is very hands-on, focusing on the physical body, without any overly alternative elements (not knocking acupuncture, etc, it just wasn't what I was looking for). His work can be uncomfortable, but he works with you to establish what a reasonable comfort limit would be. In my case, it was the correct zone of discomfort and I was never overly sore/swollen afterwards (though a little can happen). After every session I saw a great deal of progress. Several sessions later, I feel like a new person--not an exaggeration (FWIW he's very conservative with his estimates and doesn't promise to be able to help everyone). Bruce is a miracle worker!!! My farther, who is also an Advanced Rolfer, recommended I check Bruce out to help me with an acute inter-muscular hematoma in my calf. I had been on crutches and in severe pain for nearly 2 1/2 weeks and even spent several days in the hospital to deal with the hematoma. After one session with Bruce I was able to feel my entire muscle system relax and within a matter of a day or so I've been able to kick the crutches and walk around almost entirely pain free! I found Bruce randomly online trying to research remedies for the back pain that I've endured my entire adult life and most particularly in the last 5 years. I had hip surgery in May after a long, 7-year process of trying to figure out what was going on. When my hip was finally fixed surgically, I realized my body was in all sorts of compensatory patterns that were aimed to brace a hip that was no longer injured, so I sought out some rolfing with Bruce. I don't normally write reviews. In fact, this is the first Yelp review that I have written even though I use the site all the time. A friend of mine had mentioned rolfing in the past and I'd always been interested in it. However, didn't find a good reason to until I got into a car accident several years back. I suffered a lot of back and neck pain after being rear-ended on the freeway. After attempting physical therapy, massages, and the chiropractor, I tried rolfing with Bruce and it changed everything! Even after the first session I could feel a difference in my neck already. I ended up going with the 10 series, was fully recovered and then some. Not only did the sessions help me physically, Bruce made sure to explain how the work is integrated psychologically, emotionally - overall holistically as well. I have since gone back for "tune-ups" following recovery from surgery. Bruce is my go-to and I don't even go to the others anymore. I've had chronic shoulder and neck tension/fatigue for several years, mainly from work related stress and long hours in front of a computer. The kind of strain that weighs you down day after day, even affecting my sleep. I've tried physical therapy, chiropractors, accupuncture, shiatsu, tiu-na, electrostimulation, cupping therapy...spent hundreds of dollars on self massaging machines and tools to find relief. Everything only provided superficial relief from my symptoms. Massage therapy was unreliable, most people were either too weak or not perceptive enough to apply their techniques in the right areas. I started going to Bruce because I had heard great things from family members who had back problems due to poor posture, stress, or growth spurts. I personally have TMJ and a raised shoulder and hip as well as general physical tenseness and imbalances that can not always be helped with yoga, stretching, or exercise. Day to day, I would have pain from daily emotional/physical stress, and feeling this in my body would make me more stressed. Bruce is extremely skilled and responsive to individual physical limitations and has helped me SO MUCH. Besides the amazing sense of well-being and relaxation I feel after a session with him, he has helped my TMJ, my flexibility, and even helped me heal my ankle after I had twisted it twice. Rolfing is a holistic way of addressing physical limitations by helping the areas surrounding the source of pain relax, and thus allowing the source of pain to be addressed in a gentle way (at least this is how I see it as a layperson!) I have had only great experiences of my sessions with Bruce and cannot emphasize how much ease and openness he can facilitate in your body. Bruce is the man. Back in May I was new to Rolfing and after some research/ asking around, I found myself on Bruce's table. My experience could not have been better. As a former athlete I've had a good amount of therapeutic treatment but this has topped it all. Bruce's customized treatment to fill my needs specifically. Through a number of these treatments Bruce has greatly improved the range of motion in troubled shoulders, reduced neck strains and pain and helped to completely relive foot pain that had troubled me for months. I started going to Bruce for body work several years ago, along with my husband who is a stroke survivor. My issue was a sciatic pain that would not go away, while my husband was hoping to alleviate the spasticity that was settling into his affected side. We have found Bruce to be a knowledgeable and caring practitioner and a very nice person as well. My sciatic pain was due in large part to old, internal scars from surgery and Bruce worked on the hard scar tissue until my pain was gone. It has stayed gone. If only hospitals were more holistic in their approach and had recommended this type massage after my operation - it would have saved me years of discomfort and pain. As a horse train my body gets tweaked in all kind of ways. I went to Bruce at the beginning of 2011 to alleviate some chronic neck issues. I had not had body work done in a year and a half. I was told not to because it might trigger some PTSD. I talked with Bruce about it on the phone. He seemed sensitive to my needs. My first session went smooth. Bruce is calm, methodical and professional. We exchanged abstract words describing sensations. He knows what he's doing. After a few sessions I had a bad fall from a horse. The ER doctor told me I had "deep contusions of my lower back and foot" After a week in bed I went to Bruce. By the following week I was on a horse (barely) and after a month I was really riding again. People were surprised by my quick recovery. I know it was Bruce that made the difference. I sought Bruce out just over a year ago, right after having my second child, because I had been having having AGONIZING back spasms since the birth of my first that no other health practitioner had been able to diagnose or help me with (including Western medical physicians, masseuses, herbalists, acupuncturists, physiatrists, physical therapists, etc.). Bruce is the first person who was able to not only help me understand what was physically going on with my body, but help me fix it and stop the terrible spasms (they had gotten so bad that changing position at the waist in order to sit or stand was excruciating, and walking was often impossible-- which makes mothering and working a pretty serious challenge!). I have gone to Bruce for 13 years for Rolfing. I had tried EVERY other remedy for my back pain, and Rolfing, and specifically, Bruce, were the only thing that helped. I initially went to him for lower back pain which totaled diminished after a few sessions. Years later, I had a herniated disc and was on about 10 Advil a day and pretty much didn't sleep for 6 months. I tried an orthopedist, cortisone shots, acupuncture, massage and a chiropractor, and nothing worked. After 7-8 sessions with Bruce. my pain and numbness subsided. He is nothing short of amazing. I have been going to Bruce off and on for the last 5 years. I broke my right leg as a kid and they set it where it is now shorter than my left. I developed back problems as an adult and I was fortunate to find Bruce to be a true healer. A previous review by a Janet I said Bruce does no Rolfing and talks to much. I found the opposite. He starts by asking you your symptoms, then he measures certain parts of your body and then goes to work. In my case he uses gravity and ones own weight to dig in with his hands and hit areas that relieve the stress that causes the pain and tightening. He is a magician with his hands. An hour lying on his table feels like 3. In two situations I could barely walk before I went in, and within days I was standing straight. Within a week I was back to normal. Plus, last I checked if you are late to an appointment that is your fault. Most Professionals wisely use their time and schedule. I have sat in his office and usually a patient walks out and I walk in. My time is an hour and that is what I pay for. I do not want my time cut short due to someone being late. Sounds Like Janet I Doesn't understand basic business. Time is money. Cancel an appointment in time no charge. If everybody cancelled last minute and refused to pay these professions would not exist. I'm glad to see all of these five star reviews for Bruce. They are well earned and warranted. I first came to see Bruce two years ago to treat an acute injury in my hip after a car accident, which hadn't healed through physical therapy alone. In fact, he came highly recommended by a physical therapist I trusted, so that was a big plus. He treated me for two sessions at that time, which helped a lot, and I was curious about returning for the full series of ten sessions at some point. About a year after my first treatments, the injury regressed from an unrelated stressor, and I figured it was time to dive in, commit to the full series, and see if together, we could help my body "forget" that particular injury's holding pattern when triggered by new stressors. I've come to learn that injury, the body, and muscle memory aren't always a simple binary of "healed" or "injured." Though I do feel that I learned and healed a great deal through the process of the ten sessions, and that Bruce is a patient, knowledgeable, and caring practitioner of his discipline. The full Rolfing series can be deeply moving/transformative, and for that reason I'm not sure I can put my experience adequately into words yet.
