Found some delicious treats and said hello to all the farmers that I haven't seen since last fall. I love this place. The farmers and vendors are always so kind and helpful and there to answer any questions you might have. Having the market in this spot, is nice because it's a beautiful park so lush and green! Plus you can grab lunch at a variety of local food trucks.

Anyways, numerous vendors gather in the field owned my Crystal Farms to sell their veggies, fruits, meats, frozen meals, breads, mushrooms, seasonings, yogurts, pastries, flowers, and items handmade by a seamstress. While you meander among the tents you can listen to fiddlers or singers while sipping coffee from a local coffee truck. The line up is an eclectic mix of Maine products and vendors. Whether you need a sweater (or her lamb), specialty vinegars (and recipes), or any other delicious housewarming or holiday present, the market offers a diverse array of products besides the organic produce and other goodies. We like providing them to our VRBO guests too. We do wish they would move Hootenanny's Bread to the south end of the market near Dharma Farms and Kelly Bros beef-- it would reduce the congestion from the long lines and make the "main street" of the market more enjoyable. The market moves indoors with fewer vendors in November-- being in the historic freight shed is a little more crowded but also cozy as the winter months progress. And our freezer is never without a Mainely Poultry pot pie or two, some haddock "burgers", or a Chase Farms apple pie. It's our kids (and their kids) favorite activity when they visit.

Their chickens peck away in various fenced in spots around the small building and over look rolling hills and their large farm house. There is stacks of egg cartons and bags that people bring back to be reused so bring yours to help out the recycle process.

She came upon the fact that the Portland Farmers' Market moves indoors for the winter season and we made plans to visit this past Saturday. While the winter market is smaller than the summer market, it still managed to fill the gymnasium at the girl's academy. We came late in the day, and many vendors apologized for how picked over they were, but we still managed to fulfill a good portion of our shopping needs. I'd say the score of the day was the dilly beans I came across as we were about to leave. I'm sure I scared the poor fella as I quickly grabbed the jar and excitedly handed him the money. I'll probably have to make the 40 mile trip next Saturday in hopes of replenishing my pickled green bean dreams.

I couldn't tell you the man's name, but he is an absolute gentle soul, always with a grin on his face. Actually, all the vendors seem to be happy to be there and that says a lot. I have heard from some vendors that they sometimes do trades with each other with their goods. How cool. "I will give you three mushrooms for a homemade whole wheat chocolate chip cookie!" Every vendor we walked by, said hello and seemed warm and friendly. The area was set up near the main walkway, which was nice - very tidy and organized. There were a lot of different patrons, young and old and everyone seemed so happy and engaged with the vendors. I can't believe it's taken me YEARS to finally visit. I will definitely return, if I can get out of work in time. That's the only downside, they are only set up until 6pm on Thursdays.

They do have parking in the back. I didn't see the sign for that from the street, but I was able to find street parking just past the market place. As I was leaving I saw the clam mascot, and I had to get a picture! I can't wait for the Yarmouth Clam Festival, it's literally the reason why I came to Maine from Austin, Texas.
