It was terrifying and I was completely asleep (also usually travel alone) luckily my partner was there and awake - ran to the door and yelled to get out. As a women if i would have been alone and someone came into my room i would have lost my mind screaming. I got an apology but not much else really. I couldn't sleep all night because I thought they might come back, so every sound woke me up again and again. This maintenance person also tried the door next to us and got a similar reaction. They screamed at them to get out and go away. Very unsettling and scary. Staff basically said oh that happens sometimes. I don't think I'll be staying here again. When I was getting ready to go to sleep, I discovered a huge hole in the wall underneath the bathroom sink (photo attached.)It appeared to be located where the drain used to be, so there is a strong possibility that sewer gases (and who knows what else ) are escaping from this hole. Needless to say, I didn't sleep very well thinking about what could crawl in through that hole. The next morning, I was going to take a shower and then go downstairs to ask to switch rooms. It was then that I noticed that instead of replacing the bathtubs, they tried (unsuccessfully) to coat it with some kind of material which is peeling off in several places. I went down to the front desk to try to switch rooms and was told that the same situation with the hole in the wall and peeling bathtub exists in several rooms. They offered to discount my room, but that really wasn't what I was looking for...... what I wanted was a functional room with no holes in the walls and a decent place to bathe. I thanked them for their help and told them that they probably needed to fire whatever contractor they used to do the work. Luckily, I was able to move across the street to the Holiday Inn Express who very graciously gave me an early check-in.

MY FIRST ENCOUNTER WITH BED BUGS…read more I wanted to participate in an event at Concord University in Athens, West Virginia, the evening of Wednesday, February 24th. Since I knew I wouldn't be done until after 9:00 pm, and I didn't want to drive two hours home to Charleston, West Virginia, I thought I would just stay at a hotel in Princeton, West Virginia, which is only about eight miles south of Athens. I could have stayed in a nicer, more modern hotel, but I decided to stay at Budget Inn and save a few bucks. So I made my reservation online. Upon checking in at about 4:00 pm, the very nice gentleman told me that if I ever wanted to stay there in the future, it would be best to call the hotel, and he would give me a better rate than having to reserve a room online. I was given room 111. The room was rather poor, with a very musty smell of the sort one might expect in a motel that has seen better days. Towels left by the previous occupant were still hanging on the shower rod. But the TV and AC/heat were okay, and the Wifi was pretty fast, and since I'm not a high maintenance sort of guy, I thought it would do for $66 including tax. After getting back to the motel after the event at Concord University, I started settling in for the night, but I decided (just to be safe) to check the bed for bed bugs, and when I pulled the comforter off the bed, I found a bed bug, a little appleseed-sized critter scurrying away, which I dutifully crushed between my thumb and forefinger. It was just ONE bed bug, but like roaches, if you see one, you know that there are more nearby. The very last thing I need in my life is a bed bug infestation at home, so I packed my things and turned in my key at the front desk, telling the manager what I had seen. Then I drove the two hours back home to Charleston, West Virginia. As soon as I got home, I threw all the clothes I had taken with me into the washer, sprayed bug spray into my luggage and took a shower. Maybe it was overkill, but I just can't deal with bed bugs on top of COVID-19. The whole experience was tremendously dismaying. Next time I'll pay more for nicer digs.

One overhead light was inadequate. No electric plug at desk. ADA issue in a handicap room. Mold in shower with no incredably poor caulk job. Bath sink has no faucet aireator so it splashes all over. Coffee maker had a pod in it from the last tenant & only one cup. Poor insulation. Noisy all night from sides and above. Big label on toilet service line was not removed by maintenance. Door locks are butchered. Totally unacceptable shower water temperature. Only one key rather than two provided. Breakfast was good. I asked who owned the hotel at check out. Told an LLC did. I asked if it was foreign owned. They said no it was a Dr. I asked if he was foreign. I was told yes. Somethings never change.

But the shower rod was severely drooping and hanging out of the wall, the shower handle kept doing 360's all the way around And had a screw hanging out of the bottom of it, there was a hole in the tub, whatever type of glue they put up the shampoo, conditioner, body wash bottles with was dripping all over the tub , and the bed squeaked like Grandma's old trundle bed. The pillows were little and were like bags of chunky foam, and pillowcases did not look laundered. Good points, staff were polite and helpful, the heat heated the 60' room quickly, bathroom was clean, and of course, it was cheap. Won't be staying there again. Private owner needs to pay attention to this place or it will fall apart quickly.

My uncle (Ed and Becky) ran the place when I was a kid and my cousin Jack took the place over after them. I stopped there a few years ago and the place brought tears to my eyes. So many great memories! Jack had passed away and I guess Rodney and Mike have taken it over now. The whole family were just good people. Nothing had changed... but the time.
