    The chocolate cake

I tried to keep an open mind about this place, having read some not so awesome reviews on Yelp but meeting a friend who just loves it. The restaurant is quite ascetically pleasing, with a nice outdoor area, although not enough to protect us from the torrential Glasgow rain! We ordered a couple of drinks and baskets of fries as soon as we sat down. The fries were unusual, and quite tasty. We then ordered a couple of tapas dishes. I got the angry prawns, and cheese and bacon croquettes. My boyfriend got the cheese and bacon burger and our friend got the salt and chilli squid. The food took quite a while to be served and unfortunately was quite disappointing. The squid and burger were good but the angry prawns weren't what I was expecting given their name. I checked before ordering as they had angry and peaceful prawns and I fancied something with a bit of a kick but despite being quite tasty there was no kick at all. The croquettes I didn't eat after trying one. The cheese and bacon was a mushed up mix and just not quite right. Despite this I though we would be safe with a slice of chocolate cake. Alas we managed to eat some of it just for the sake of it, but our friend barely touched hers. It was overly sickly and filled with excess ganache. It was over priced as each tapas was around £5 and slow service. I won't be going back.

Total wee suntrap in Virginia Court. Friendly staff and lots of outdoor tables (you can phone and have one reserved) and a menu with a wide variety of tapas, open faced sandwiches and specials.

Was here with my girl Jane, we had lunch! Pictured are the angry prawns(!)

We went for lunch today (Saturday afternoon, around 2:30pm) we were lucky to get a table even though we didn't have a reservation as both inside and outside filled quickly while we were there. Turns out a girl I used to work beside was working there and was very helpful in advising how much we should share and recommended a few dishes. Jane and I were not disappointed! We had salami and prosciutto bread along with halloumi with chilli, haggis balls with a whiskey sauce, angry prawns and salt and pepper squid. A chilled Rioja was also recommended and we finished off with ice cream and crepes. Thoroughly enjoyed our meal, the service was attentive yet unintrusive and we weren't hurried away from our table even though it was busy. Great location too in a quiet area within the city centre, would recommend!

We loved this restaurant and enjoyed all our dishes. The good thing about small plates, at modest prices, is if a member of your party doesn't care for a dish it's no big deal. The salads, the kebabs, the dips, the seafood... everything was first rate as was the service. Only dish that faltered (and we had 10 among four of us) was the moussaka. Terrific meal! They need to pay more attention to their Yelp listing - there's a full bar, excellent cocktails, and they take credit cards - despite the Yelp listing.

As I get further into my twenties, I've found that restaurants have an increasing tendency to play their music very loud. I'm sorry, and call me old fashioned, but one of the main things about going out for dinner is that you are there to have a conversation with the person you are with. I'm not there to get my groove on. Anyway, I digress. I really enjoy Greek/Turkish and Middle Eastern Food which is what this place specialises in. We chose some mezze plates including the chicken souvlaki, soutzoukakia (meatballs), the Moroccan Chicken Tagine and the Loukaniko. It was mouth watering. It was great value too, the portion sizes were manageable and we left very happy customers.

And so, with its stylised arty interior, the impressively huge bar which adorns an entire wall and the kind of service that'll leave you wishing the waiter was your pal, you're plunged into the ultra cool tapas cavern that is Brutti Ma Buoni. You will kick yourself for not finding it sooner and you will leave with a Brutti-induced holiday glow. For the five of us we opted for ten tapas dishes to share. The waiter was great, nodding along with an approving 'mmm-hmm' to all the dishes we'd chosen that he'd personally recommend and even suggested some of his favourites. (Paella! - Nom, good choice!) He was attentive and friendly, ensuring that everything was alright for us and that we had enough water. In fact, all the staff we encountered were lovely. Score! The result is that Brutti Ma Buoni exudes genuine charm. None of it the least bit try-too-hard. Hence the relaxed vibe which managed to take me far, far away and into cheery-happy holiday mode. We chose peaceful prawns, honey & chilli chicken wings, chickpea & spinach stew, mushrooms with blue cheese, spring rolls, salt & pepper squid, chorizo, chicken paella, aubergine fritters and patatas bravas. Everything was delicious but my favourites were the salt and pepper squid - which was deliciously battered and seasoned - along with the chorizo, (nom!) the chicken paella, (why thank you, waiter!) and the aubergine fritters. We all agreed that the aubergines were an unexpected surprise; lovely and fluffy in their light batter. Mmm! Heavenly tapas delights, and just the right amount of food for sharing, which, of course, is the best way to indulge tapas-style. So, leaving Brutti Ma Buoni, I genuinely did feel like I'd been on holiday; somewhere with sunshine, an ever-flowing bar and an undeniably warm welcome. Who needs holidays anyway?! When I next need a dose of self-induced sunshine and tasty tapas, you bet that it'll be Brutti's that saves the day. And I can't wait!

Thankfully I was right, and we headed up to the mezzanine to take a seat as the rest of the bar was pretty full. You really do feel like you've been transported to Europe when you take in your surroundings - super cool decor, a great vibe and interesting selection of food. It's really well done and made me feel like I'd been on a mini holiday. We ordered a selection of dishes to share: peaceful prawns, honey & chilli chicken wings, chickpea & spinach stew, mushrooms with blue cheese, spring rolls, salt & pepper squid, chorizo, chicken paella, aubergine fritters and patatas bravas. The waiter agreed that between 5 of us, 10 dishes was a good amount to share. We didn't have long to wait and the food arrived as it was ready, which was great. I dived straight into the squid which was some of the tastiest I've had in a while - a great batter and delicious aioli to go with it. The aubergine fritter was also really great - a whole aubergine slice with a delicate and light batter - it could've used a sauce of its own but thankfully there was some sauces left over in the other dishes which were perfect. The paella, which we'd ordered on the waiter's recommendation was one of my other favourites - really well cooked with hunks of chicken it it, it was nice to have some starch to go with the other dishes. The spring rolls were also really lovely - simple, sure but they were perfectly cooked and crispy - almost addictive in their crunch. Service was great, the bill was reasonable and it's a lovely space to enjoy a relaxing drink if you don't feel like eating. I wish they had the croquettes from Brutti Compadres on the menu here, but that's my only complaint! There's also an outdoor, covered seating area if it's warm enough to enjoy the weather - I'd definitely head back for a drink out there as it looked lovely (until it started raining).

One of the places she recommended was 'BABS, and after looking at the menu online we decided to try it. It turned out to be one of the best culinary experiences we've had. The place is not large, the ceilings are low and the noise level can be a little distracting. However, even though we didn't have reservations, we were quickly seated. When a larger table became available, we were offered that one instead. We had the sense that this was very much a family-run business and that they really love what they do. We were quite hungry, so we ordered the Mezze Platter for Two which was very reasonably priced at 22.5£/per person. For our four-dip starter we chose the Tzatziki, Sundried Tomato Hummus, Classic Hummus and Babaganoush which came with small pitas that were themselves spiced. All were delicious and we could have easily filled up on just these. Our main courses were chicken shish, chicken souvlaki, lamb shish and king prawns. All were extremely tasty. The platter also came with two side dishes and for these we chose the Basmati Rice and the Beef Doner Fries. The rice was an excellent complement to the main courses, but because by this time we were so full we ate the Beef topping but left the fries. We loved 'BABS so much that a couple of weeks later when we had a three-hour layover in Glasgow between trains, we went back to 'BABS for lunch. The return visit did not disappoint. We would wholeheartedly recommend 'BABS to anyone dining out in Glasgow. It's well worth it.

Piccolo Mondo is close to Glasglow Central Station, on a very uninviting street. Despite the somewhat negative exterior setting, inside it's welcoming and traditional. We found the service to be friendly and efficient; unfortunately, while the food was AOK it was nowhere near as good as the reviews had led us to believe :-( For my starter, I had the house specialty - Potted Prawns, served in a warm creamy sauce with thin grissini sticks. It was OK, but I doubt I'd order it again. For my entrée I had the Seafood Risotto, which came with too much Calamari in a slightly spicy sauce with prawns and mussels - decidedly unappealing... Overall, it was an average Italian meal for too high a price in very busy surroundings. Better to find an exceptional meal elsewhere.
