What a great experience over the phone with Bill. I called looking for help on the foundation of my 1929 home which had two vertical cracks from settling. We are in the process of adding James Hardie Siding to our house and I was concern that the additional weight might cause more settling. I was expecting to set up an appointment for him to come and take a look at my house but he spent 17 minutes with me on the phone going over basic engineering theories of what he felt was typical of a home the age of mine. We own several large commercial properties in Portland, Oregon. Two years ago, one of our neighbors decided to demolish their building that was adjacent to our structure. I am a Realtor and have not really run into many serious issues with settling but am working with buyers who on inspection found serious cracks and even a sunken corner in the garage. My clients were very concerned about this issue maybe being ongoing or systemic to the house structural integrity so after looking on Yelp, I found Bill with BSM Engineering. I figured he wouldn't call me back for a week or maybe never but he called back and literally spent an hour on the phone with me giving me quite an education on everything related to soils and structure and movement and actually calculated the exact cost of the materials and labor that it would require to do the work we needed and even gave me the name of his go-to guy to do the work, recommended to not pay more than a certain amount and told me the exact application we should request and in which order. He really set my mind at ease and I know the buyers will also be so relieved to not have to spend thousands of dollars and weeks of time to find out that the issue isn't really that big of a deal. All this and he didn't charge me for his time. I offered to buy him dinner for his time but he refused.
