    Deep dish Spabby pizza

Admittedly, it took me awhile to try Bubba's due to some bad reviews on Google. Last week, I decided to give it a try, so placed an online order via their website for pick up. Food was ready promptly, and the young man at tge pick up window was friendly. The pizza, by far, is the best I've had since I moved to the area a year and a half ago. I ordered The Spabby (i think thats what it was called) as a deep dish, and it was phenomenal! I also brought home garlic cheesebread, a stromboli, and their "combo" appetizer (stuffed manicotti and meatballs). Everything was good, but the pizza was definitely the star!

First Time at Bubba's -- And I Might Be Back Just for the Strom First visit to Bubba's, and right off the bat--parking? Not a problem. They've got enough blacktop out front to host a small used car lot. Inside, you've got maybe 20 tables and a bar with six high-top chairs. I rolled in at 5 p.m. on a Friday and found myself the sole occupant of the bar. It was just me, my thoughts, and the sound of the soda gun. Out on the floor, maybe four families were quietly enjoying dinner. I asked the bartender/waitress for a recommendation, and she sold me on the pepperoni breadsticks with nacho cheese dip. I also went with a Supreme Stromboli and a cold beer from the tap--emphasis on cold, because that beer could have chilled a polar bear. While I was waiting, the place started to fill in--three more cars pulled up, and I started to get that "something good's about to happen" feeling. Ten minutes later, food arrived. Now, maybe it was the light crowd, or maybe Bubba's kitchen crew just runs like a NASCAR pit stop, but either way... I wasn't complaining. The stromboli? Outstanding. And listen, I'm a strom snob--I've had enough bad ones to know when it's the real deal. This one had perfectly crispy bread, sauce that was sweet-but-not-too-sweet, and generous helpings of cheese, pepperoni, peppers, and red onion. My taste buds were having a block party. The breadsticks... well, here's the thing: if you're picturing Olive Garden-style breadsticks, stop right there. These were more like pepperoni-wrapped cheese sticks that had been toasting in the oven--a taquito with an Italian accent. Different, but still tasty. The damage: $36 for beer, strom, and breadsticks. Not exactly fast-food prices, but I'm leaving with a full belly and half a stromboli for tomorrow's lunch. And honestly, future me is already grateful.

Excellent pizza & sandwiches. The crust is freshly made, & the pizza had a good balance of topping to the sauce. The sandwiches also are on fresh baked buns. Four of us shared food. Both the pizza & sandwiches were delicious. The table server was friendly & kept sour drinks refilled. Will eat here again the next time visiting the area.

Pizza was good. Service a little slow but ok. Ambiance is high quality out building. Had to grab condiments off another table.

The Breadsticks with delicious marinara, and our cheese pizza were truly the best we've ever had. There are SO many options for vegetarians, as well as a kids menu, and SO much more than only breadsticks, and pizza. We can't wait to dine there on our next visit to IIU.

Locals told me that it was because the local pizza places, especially Mother Bear's, are so popular, that college students would go there instead of getting cheap, mid pizza. I have now been to Mother Bear's three or four times and really wish that there was a Little Caesar's Pizza in town. This most recent trip was during lunchtime and I ordered a cheese slice, a small house salad, and a drink. I fortunately got there early enough to get a clean table, though I saw probably fifteen to twenty people come in after me who were not so lucky. Following the sign at the door, instructing them to "Please Seat Yourselves," I heard several people ask out loud how they were supposed to do that if there were no clean tables. Some employees frantically cleaned a few tables and had them sit down. A few minutes after I ordered, the waitress brought the house salad. It looked fresh at first but the more I ate the more I realized that several of the romaine pieces were either clearly out of date or simply bad. In a moment when cyclospora is running rampant through the US, the lack of care in selecting the lettuce was worrying. Several moments later I began wondering if the cheese slice was going to be brought to my table soon. Instead, it was probably twenty minutes between getting the salad and the cheese slice and it was pretty obvious (see the photo) that the slice had been sitting under a heat lamp for around that same amount of time. The crust was dry, the cheese had become stale and too salty, and it was not a very enjoyable experience. Eating around the bad lettuce was, unfortunately, more enjoyable, and it was also better than the pizzas I've had here in the past, where the dough, toppings, and cheese aren't integrated in a way that blends their flavors together very well. The one thing I can say about this time is that the Dr. Pepper was fine, which is not something I can always say about restaurant sodas. I think for me this will probably be my last time going to Mother Bear's. It seems like one of those places that probably was good at some point in the past but now they rely on the fact that undergrads and locals will go to the restaurant no matter what. I'll probably just keep dreaming of eating Little Caesar's instead or, more likely, I'll just go get better pizza at Osteria Rago.
