We were looking a good choice of food after touring around the area, so it was time to eat. I choose Bubs. My step mother-in-law calls it BOOBs, but not really a fan of the pronunciation plus I believed she was incorrect.. but not one to argue. Well getting seated, I proceeded to read the very interesting history about the brewery, ect on the menu. Guess what... I was wrong.. it is pronounced BOOBs. The wait person was very attentive to our needs and ordered a local LaCrosse beer, even though the Bubs brewery did have a wide selection. The food selection was extensive, with specials on the board. I had the black and bleu burger, which they really cook the crap out of it. Better safe and sorry, I guess. Bub's is a local bar with a rich history. The menu items are varied and the food is generally good. The seating is plentiful and the staff is always nice and cheerful. They have chili year round. Chili is usually seasonal at most places and often is not served in the spring or fall so being able to get it anytime at Bub's is a plus for me. If you like taco salad this is the place. Visited this place today with a group of about 15 people. Place was not busy so the service was about average for such a large group. The waitress was friendly and meet the accommodations of the large group with ease. I ordered the CB Burger and the waitress replied that was the "most popular" burger. Burger was average but the flavor was pretty good. Just basic Ruffle chips served with the burger. You could upgrade to FF or Rings but I thought the burger was "spendy" enough. Their home brew was good. Came in later in the evening and while it was full it wasn't packed. No waiting for a table. It took us over an hour to get the famous mushroom appetizer which was a ridiculous wait. They were good. Been a few times and the food is always good. The wait staff are hit and miss as sometimes you get a great waitress and this last time I had to go hunt down my own napkins. We were touring Winona State college and had time before the tour and out scheduled meeting with the Financial Aid staff - so we decided to try something with some local flair. We selected Bub's... it was lunch time on a Friday afternoon. We arrived and were greeted promptly (and politely) - and were seated within a reasonable time. Our waiter took drink orders when he did he (thankfully) advised (warned?) us that the kitchen staff was backed up and the sooner we put our order in, the better - so we put our orders in then and there. What followed was a 50 minute wait - leaving us about 12 minutes to finish eating. I'm grateful the waiter warned us, and I'm glad I asked for the check as soon as the food arrived. If not, we would have missed our appointment. (We arrived at our appointment with three minutes to spare...) The staff were all quite polite, but the restaurant was either understaffed or has an inadequatly sized / staffed kitchen. I orederd a "Philly Wrap" w/side salad. My wife ordered the "Club Wrap" w/side salad, and my daughters ordered a "Buffalo Chicken Wrap" and another "Club Wrap" (one with fries and the other onion rings. The food was OK. My Philly was PACKED with meat but was quite scarce with onions and peppers. Overall, the feeling at the table anout the food was "Meh..." (pretty ambivalent) - and when the check arrived and I saw the total for what we were eating I went from ambivalence to feeling pretty dissapinted. If our daughter ends up attending College here, its likely we will give Bub's another shot somewhere along the line, but as they say - first impressions are often the most important - and our first impression wasn't as favorable as I had hoped for. read more

This place is one of my go-to's for dinner or drinks in downtown Winona. Very good food for the price and awesome daily specials! Delicious burgers and sandwiches. My favorite appetizer is their cellar mushrooms with their special sauce. Two of my favorite entrees is their black and blue burger and Hawaiian delight chicken sandwich. Always a great mix of Winona students and locals with a very energetic, family friendly atmosphere. They accommodate groups well and even have a back room that can be converted into a private dining room. They also have comedy shows throughout the year. The last time I ordered some kind of South Western sand which and it was obviously put together in a real hurry, it was a mess and falling apart, and nearly every ingredient was artificial, including the cheese, guacamole, sour cream, everything. I did not even eat half, and the waitress saw that I hardly touched it and did not say a word, she quickly picked up my dishes and threw the check at me. i went in at about 6:00pm, and we got seated in the first 5 minutes of being there. we got sat in the back room, which i liked. the mood was welcoming and a sporty feeling which i like. we immediately got a waiter and she took our drinks. the cherry coke was 10/10. i recommend. we ordered cheese curds for an app and cheeseburgers for the meal. the cheese curds came out after 30 minutes of ordering them, which was way later than we expected. our meal came out 30 minutes after that and our waiter never checked up on our food. some other girl had to bring it to us. my cheeseburger was greasy and the food was cold. so that was a bummer. overall nice place but not if you are in a hurry for a quick bite. read more

You want a reason to ask someone if they like Boobs? Its pronounced Boobs but spelled Bub's and I love it. I was here for work and we had our final reception here. It is remiscient of the Billy Goat in Chicago with their own brew in the following kinds: Light Red Dark all are awesome. Standard bar food but I need to go back and try more since my trip was just appetizers though the fried mushrooms were injected with cream cheese....soo good! Bub's has a large variety of appetizers and drinks. I really like the steak sandwich here or juicy hamburgers. I would say the food is 4 star consistently and the prices are not bad. The service can be kinda spotty. My last outting there, they had 2 servers in the whole restaurant that was packed. So a quick bite turned into 2 hours. Normally, services is much better and quicker, but docking a bit for spotty service. However, I will still go back, overall I like it pretty well. read more

Stopped in here Tuesday for lunch with my family of 7! We were seeted right away and told the lunch specials. Our server was very friendly and went out of her way to make our visit great by bringing the kids crayons and coloring paper. She immediately got our drinks and took our food orders. We started with a few appetizers like the loaded nachos and the cellular mushrooms with a handcrafted horseradish sauce! Both were very good and nice size portions for the price. My wife ordered the Rueben which we split and a bowl of loaded baked potato soup! The sandwich was tasty and the soup was perfect with great flavors! The kids shared some chicken strips and mac-n-cheese. My cousin had a buffalo chicken salad I think and her boyfriend had one of their loaded burgers. Everyone liked the food! The prices were fair, the food was tasty, the service was great, the food tasted fresh. My only complaint would be the Russian or 1000 island dressing they served with the tasty Rueben sandwich seemed like it came out of a kraft bottle. Make a dressing from scratch and it will make that sandwich way better. Who knows you may even sell more of them. Also the menus were pretty dirty and dingy also they were falling apart. I would have liked to see a few more craft beers available being it is a brewery. Other than that is was a wonderful lunch and experience for our 1st visit. Usually I have great service, great food and awesome drinks but this time was not so good. A buddy and I sat at the bar, we usually get a table but figured we would try something, bad idea. The bartender was a middle aged woman who seemed really nice. She promptly waited on us, gave us menus and drinks. We ordered appetizers and our meal at once. We waited, waited and waited, FINALLY the appetizers came, 30 seconds before the food, big pet peeve. Don't get me wrong, the food was good and the drinks were good when we got them, however after our first drinks and after our food came it took another bartender who had just clocked in to come and ask if we wanted more drinks. Then when all was said and done, our original lady bartender asked us if we wanted to cash out, we said yes and asked to split the bill in half. After waiting again for another 15+ minutes we see the bartender across the bar from us, off the clock drinking a beer. So we asked a different bartender to cash out and finally got to leave. I have never had that bad of service that Bubs before. Usually its great and i go there often. Hopefully next time is better, but if you are going to sit at the bar watch for the middle aged woman bartender. read more

I was traveling through Winona and I can honestly say, this is the first time Yelp has let me down. I pulled up the Yelp app on my phone and noticed Bub's Brewing Co. was the most rated and highest rated joint in town. I made my way there smiling from ear-to-ear. The atmosphere both inside and out is fantastic. A very well setup bar and grill with a nice local Irish flavor to it. They have a few pool tables, TV's to watch the big game and a beautiful bar packed with all kinds of brews. I read the rave reviews about their burgers and fries; how could I not order that, right? I decided on the "cb" burger, a beef patty topped with cheddar cheese, bacon and BBQ sauce. My fiancee' had the Grande, Bub's version of a chili cheese burger. We also had the Winona fries as an appetizer because again, we read about them in reviews! I couldn't have been more disappointed with this food. I could have easily made everything we ate by going to the grocery store and busting out my gas grill. The Winona fries were nothing special at all. Cheap crinkle cut fries from a bag draped in nacho cheese sauce and then topped with powdery Cajun seasoning. The fries weren't seasoned (tossed) with the Cajun, it was simply splashed over the nacho cheese. Huh? I knew this was a bad sign! The burgers came and again,.more standard food prepackaged vendor food. The burgers were not handmade, they were from a box for sure. We tore the meat apart and could easily tell they were processed patties. The taste was similar to Burger King, they had a unnatural meat taste. Similar to how a thin and lifeless Whopper tastes like a "flame broiled" patty. Couldn't not get any seasoning taste at all from the meat, just this overly harsh "artificial meat" taste. The cheddar? From a processed package. The bacon? Precooked and uninspiring. The onion rings? Also could tell they were pre-made and simply fried by our cook. Bub's takes no special care in creating their dishes. It's simply boxed food they fry, cook-through, heat up and serve to their customers. How is that special? How is that even cooking? I've had many burgers in my life, light years better than what Bub's is turning out. How in the world is this the most highly rated joint in Winona? I'm not sure what other posters are thinking with these four and five star reviews. I can't speak about their beer, it seemed like a plentiful selection, but the food is NOT WORTH IT! Garbage. I ate at Bub's for the first time today, and it was okay. Not great, as I anticipated after reading the Yelp reviews and rating. I had a rueben sandwich, substituting onion rings for the usual potato chips (total $8.50). It wasn't anything I couldn't have easily made at home with ingredients found at the grocery store -- pressed corned beef, bland rye bread, very little or no sauerkraut and a side of boring bulk-style 1000 island dressing. The onion rings were similar to Mrs. Paul's frozen rings. The Bub's Blackforest (stout style) beer was good. The Bub's Amber was tasteless and over-carbonated. All in all, an okay dining experience, but at $33 including tip for two at lunch, not a place I would frequent if I lived in Winona. read more

No trip to Winona is complete without a visit to Bub's. Their burgers are literally to die for. There's so much stuff you know is not good for you stacked on them that you're probably going to lose a few months off your life after consuming one. Seriously, I could feel my arteries harden. Their house brews are pretty good as well, I suggest the red. It's one of the better microbrew ales I've had. I doubt they brew the beers on-site because the bar also serves liquor. But I don't know why you would want liquor when you probably have Winona's best beer selection. read more

I've been in Winona for about 8 months and I've heard a lot of good things about Bub's but never bothered to give it a chance. Well after a friend raved about it, I decided to accompany him there. The atmosphere was pleasant, and the wait-staff was accommodating. The menu selection didn't impress me much, though. There was a sign for a Yellowfin Tuna Steak Sandwich which caught my eye, so I gave that a chance. While my friend went with I believe the All American burger. The one with the fried egg on it. He still claims it to be the best burger he's ever had, but to me it looked very lacking. The burger looked small and unappetizing. But then again, I did not eat it. The cooking times were quite quick though. We ordered our food and got it much faster than I was expecting. As for my personal experience with the food, it was quite lacking. My tuna steak sandwich was very dry and tasted like the grill. I was expecting much better. I was also hoping for more than just a small handful of chips, but that's not the worst thing in the world. I was hoping I just caught them on an off day, and I decided to go back again with my girlfriend. I don't recall what she got, but I got the breaded shrimp dinner. It came with a side salad, some sort of deep fried mashed potatoes, and 12 deep fried pieces of shrimp. The side salad was boring. A handful of chopped lettuce with two tomatoes and one cucumber cut in half with some croutons. Not appealing to me whatsoever. The fried potato items were quite intriguing, not at all what I expected when I read it on the menu. But they were clearly just bought in a box and thrown in a deep fryer. As for the shrimp, it was just deep fried shrimp, nothing special. All in all, it's a bar with bar food. Nothing that I can consider raving about when it comes to the food. Might be the best place to have a burger in good ol Winona, their steak is very good as well. You absolutely have to try the Cajun burger, i love the fresh sauteed bell peppers that come with the burger, its truly a must try for spicy and/or Cajun lovers. The staff and bartenders are very friendly, its a great place to relax and shoot some pool. Plenty of parking options which was never a problem in Winona. On Tuesdays they have 2 for 1's!!! so be sure to go on Tuesday, although the wait could be long, also try their humongous roast beef sandwich. Two words: Cellar. Mushrooms. Yes, it's an appetizer. But they are so delicious. I order them for myself, hoarding every bite as though they should be taken to Mount Doom and destroyed. The dipping sauce might have crack in it, the batter is light and golden, the stuff in the middle is a gooey epic flavor adventure. As for the burgers? They are good, try the burger with an egg!
