I have suffered with severe RLS for more than 25 years. I was under the care of a Neurologist and taking so much medication! I didn't even consider that there might be another avenue. I joined a Facebook group for RLS support and read about Dr. Buchfehrer. I looked him up and read some pretty promising reviews. His office is more than 2 hrs from my home, but I decided to make an appointment anyway. He took a thorough history and said he could treat me with a different medication and I would be 100% better. He was right!! I have been under his care for about six months and I have almost no symptoms. I sleep better than I have in many, many years. Can't say enough about this doctor...was sent here by the recommendation of Dr. Meldy (another good doctor) He listens attentively and addresses your concerns as well as those he has for you and your health. Dr. Buchfuhrer is absolutely awesome! I've been fighting PLMD (restless arms and legs) for years. On the first visit, things got better. Over several months, he worked with me until the issue was nearly gone. We drive down from the San Fransisco Bay Area, and it's so worth it! Also, Dr. B. Has been very good about being very reachable by phone and email. And always so patient, taking the time each person needs without rushing. Have seen him for almost ten years for sleep disorders - RLS and periodic limb movements in sleep. He always works with me and helps me find what is best for me. I noticed another review about him being late from lunch. I can only say what has happened to me. I had an appointment last week and didn't even have time to get settled and was already being called in. In the ten years I have been going there, I have rarely had to wait more than a few minutes and can only recall one time where the wait was longer then 5-10 minutes before being called back. He is personable, knowledgeable, and works very hard to find the best solution for your situation. The staff are all nice; sometimes they do not always follow through. Most of the time, though, it's all good - I just pay attention and make sure it works out right. If you have RLS and have not had good results with your current doctor, it is worth seeing him. read more

Dr Buchfuhrer is a hero! I suffer from RLS with augmentation and needed a new approach to treatment. I first heard of Dr B when my sister gave me his book and then later through the RLS Foundation. I had my first experience with RLS in 1980. I was 13. No doctor could ever diagnose it. When the WWW came out in the 1990's, I began my own research and discovered the definition of Restless Leg Syndrome was elated that I finally knew I wasn't alone. Back then the main line of treatment was Levodopa, and I was afraid. Eventually, my PCP prescribed Klonopin in the late '90's, and I'm still addicted. In the late 2000's, my PCP put me on Mirapex. In November, my RLS came back so severely that I had to miss work. One doctor in San Diego treats it, and couldn't fit me in for months, even though I offered 20K for them to see me immediately. Back to the internet, I began doing medical research and kept finding a common author in private practice. I googled Dr Buchfuhrer and realized he was only as far as Los Angeles. I figured someone with his reputation would be 6 months out for an appointment. They got me in within 2 weeks. He didn't even look at my chart, and just began asking questions. He spent over an hour with me, explained that I was going through augmentation and devised a plan for my recovery. That was a month ago. Last night was the first night I slept for 8 hours in over 3 months. He is a God send, a life saver, a caring human being, and a true professional. Oh, how I wish there were more medical professional like him on this earth! He is also now caring for my pulmonology issues as well. The other reviews are right; he returns phone calls personally. I left a message at night and received a call-back from him within 5 minutes. Educated and raised in Quebec, Canada explains why he is better than 90% of American MD who only care about getting paid and staying within the 15 minute allotted window covered by insurance. I couldn't agree more with the previous reviewer. Dr B was recommended by my Boston RLS specialist who knew I was moving to CA. No matter that I was in SF and Dr B is just out of LA, she assured me it would be worth the trip. He took over an hour and a half with me during that initial appt, never rushed me one little bit (it was after 5 by the time we finished up - now THAT is service!!) and he even treated my asthma to boot! He is as kind as he is knowledgeable and def one of the authorities in the field. I had had one of the hardest RLS cases for three docs in Boston, only to have Dr B say he had seen worse and could definitely help me. So far so good, i could not be happier! read more

My first visit with Dr. Buchfuhrer was over 20 years ago and I still visit him. Many years ago I was diagnosed with asthma & the onset didn't begin until I was an adult so I was very unfamiliar with the treatment or how to help myself. Dr B informed me of what the triggers were that would worsen my asthma. Whenever my breathing or asthma worsened I was in his office immediately. He treated me with medications that would soon bring me back to 100%. He listens and asks questions & takes the time to better understand all elements of your illness & I never feel rushed. Dr. Buchfuhrer has incredible up to date knowledge about RLS treatment. He takes time to listen and is very thorough. I traveled from FL to see him. I had seen 5 different Dr. in my area before flying out to CA. They were all either overwhelmed with the severity of my condition or attempted to use treatments that were taught to them 20 years ago. My RLS started in 1991 and I suffered from severe augmentation in the last 2 years. After one visit my condition is finally under control. I suffered with restless legs syndrome and insomnia for many years. About 6 yrs ago I read a book written by Dr. Buchfurer. I pay out of pocket to see him because he is not part of my hmo. He has been the only person to get me any relief, going on 5 years now. His staff is very nice. You do have to stay on top of them and be proactive because some things fall thru the cracks but it's worth it to get some relief. read more

When I had augmentation,doctor #3 was piling on me all kinds of additional meds and I was feeling like a zombie. I remember worrying that I would never feel right again. Beware of hostile, rude, incompetent front office. Dr. B has been our family doctor for many years and he has helped us. From time to time his front office folks have not been so helpful. Today, especially, I had particularly difficult time with Yadira (sp?) trying to get a prescription refilled that I have been routinely taking. She told me that the drug store had been sending requests for refill but it could not be approved because I had not been to see Dr. B in over a year which was not true. Then she quoted state law. She argued that the doctor has over 500 patients and they can't be calling everybody to come and see the doctor every year and that it was a patient's responsibility to know the state law that governs prescription dispensing. Really? Then she said, as a courtesy, she would send the drug store a 1 month refill approval (not an "authorization" because I used that word got a lecture on that!) if I booked an appointment with Dr. B! WOW. Sounds like they want to bill me for doctor visit more than help a patient. She raised her voice and wouldn't even let me get a word in until I politely asked her to let me finish when I questioned her and then she said that I didn't even ask a question so she didn't have to answer me. Ugh. I waited for over an hour at the drug store for the doctors office to send an "ok" to refill the prescription. Yadira said she had already sent the "ok" before we got off the phone. Not so according to the drug store I was at who sent the refill requests. With help of drug store we found the prescription was sent to another location. Another hour. Bottom line, I booked an appointment so I could get my prescription (seems like coercion more than courtesy). It may be time to find another doctor. And wait office wait times are also a problem. read more
