My niece was admitted for a blood infection last Thursday. She went two days without food - and only got food because I called the cafeteria to get her some. They apologized and said they were short handed. She has been feeling better for several days, and has been told she was going home "tomorrow" for the last three days. They said they needed to run a certain scan before they would release her and apparently it took three days to do it. It is now Friday, scan was done yesterday. She thought she was getting out last evening, and then they promised her today she would go home. Now they told her insurance has not approved her home health care, and she won't be going anywhere - Monday at the soonest because insurance company won't be able to approve it until next week. This poor 41 year old has stage 4 cancer and two small children at home she hasn't seen in over a week. I've called to talk to medical director, the CEO, her doctors and left messages. No call back at all! This place has done more harm than good for all of us. read more

Every time a loved one comes here for care, the room-mate is a dementia patient who becomes delirious and sets off bed alarms All. Night. Long. Realistically, this is outside the staff's control, but it's not outside the Board's: Other hospitals have reduced the number of rooms to improve the patient experience for those who are not demented (and need rest). read more

This hospital was a damn joke. My niece had to be transferred from ECMC to come here to get heart surgery. The head nurse was a freaking bitch. Her name was Conny and she needed to get her ass whooped. She was so mean to my niece in to any of her visitors. When you're in healthcare, you don't treat your patience like crap especially when they're getting heart surgery or something else serious like that and she treated my niece like she was garbage. The doctor was nice who took care of her, came to talk with us afterwards, but the nurses were all just evil. I would never recommend anybody going here who I stay there. This is the 15th floor nurses so you're all aware So if you're stuck on the 15th floor and you have a nurse named Connie, run !! ‍ They did not want to feed my niece, They would not come when she hit the call button to go to the bathroom or for food or medication or whatever they ignored her. They would make her and her roommate wait forever to go to the bathroom if they showed up at all. It would either forget about you when bringing food supposedly or your medication or they just didn't feel like showing up and they would make you starve. I would rather die than go to this hospital for care. Because the fact is is they don't care. Place wasn't very clean either as was kind of a dirty hospital. When my niece's first roommate left, they never came to clean that side of the room for about nine hours after the woman left. They left her nasty, dirty, gross bed filled with whatever was in it , a whole big container of urine that sat there all day long that made the whole room smell like piss, and just her filth and dirt and things thrown on the floor. It was just ridiculous. The only reason this hospital gets two stars. It's because like I said the doctor was nice, I was helped out a lot by a nurse on the third floor who is very very nice when my niece was in surgery, And my niece lived through the surgery, and the job was done. So the doctor helped her. But I do not recommend staying here or going here for anything else other than if you have a problem with your heart . read more

I've visited this ER a few times in the last few years. I've never had a problem and the care givers gave been efficient and friendly. Triage is usually quick but depending on the busyness it might take a little time to get your case attended to. However, I have no complaints about wait time. There are vending machines and TV's, and now they have a free phone charging station. That's a great thing to have because you know wait times can be long. My experience in the ER was less than ideal honestly. I went to the ER due to losing consciousness multiple times in a short period of time. During registration I lost consciousness and the woman working with me did not call a nurse or tell my mom when she came back into the room after going to the bathroom. The PA I saw in the ER advised that I was going to be admitted taken upstairs to a room, and for further observation overnight. He also said that I would be seen by Cardio and Neuro after having scans and tests done. My cardio tests were done early in the morning and I was advised neuro would come soon for a consult. After 22 hours in the same ER room without many updates on my care plan or results of my blood work or multiple cardio exams, I finally asked what the heck was going on. I won't go into detail about the attitude I got from the nurse but I was told I was waiting for Neuro and that she wasn't their boss. Queue frustration and annoyance. An hour later the Cardio dr comes in and tells me the result of my cardio test and says that I am going to need to see Neuro and I needed to stay another night because of it. Trigger anger. I had been told the previous night at 8pm that Neuro would be in within 2-3 hours for a consult. Now it's 2:30pm the next day and I'm being told that I am STILL waiting on Neuro and it was too late for the tears so I would have to stay again!? I told the Dr that I wanted to speak with someone that was in charge of patient care. Come to find out, while talking to the nurse manager, Karen, even though I was told multiple times by the PA and 2 nurses that I was waiting on Neuro, there was not one single Neuro consult or test ordered by the PA. So I was waiting for someone that wasn't even coming! Why wasn't this caught by either of the nurses? I asked if I can have the tests and I'm told yes, but not tonight because it was too late so I'd have to stay the night again for tests in the morning. They drop the ball and I have to either struggle in the hospital another night away from my 15 month old baby and completely responsible for the cost or I could go home and chance having another episode and go back. Honestly because I no longer felt that I could trust my care team, I took the latter and the nurse's managers phone number with promise of quick admission and full work up if need be. The nurses manager, Karen is the only reason this experience got 2 stars. read more

The experience in the emergency room was horrible. This is the area where prompt care should be provided. I went with my daughter, a special needs girl who was vomiting, dehydrated, and completely dependent on others. I arrived at Buffalo General Hospital at 9:50 am, thinking it was for the best, as there were only three people waiting. I signed her in at the entrance, and they immediately called her over to take her blood pressure and pulse. They never took her temperature. Then they took a blood sample and then called her in. Everything was done very quickly, and from around 11:00 am to 11:30 am, that process was completed. However, it wasn't until 1:15 pm that they gave her a Zofran pill for her vomiting. At 4:10 pm, they finally took her to the room to be seen by the doctor. At 4:41 pm, the doctor arrived to tell me that she was dehydrated, something that was already known. She informed me that she was going to do another blood test, take a urine sample and a X-ray, she was going to get IV fluid and Zofran through her veins. At 5:00 pm they gave her IV fluid and Zofran through her veins and drew her blood. At 7:00 pm they took the X-ray. At 7:30 pm they took her temperature for the first time. And they did the COVID test. At 7:45 pm they gave her something to collect the urine sample when she can't do it herself but it is difficult when she is dehydrated. Between 8:15 pm and 8:56 pm at my insistence they gave her Pepcid to lower her stomach acids since she continued to feel unwell and they gave her another IV fluid since she had not urinated because she was still dehydrated in order to be able to take the urine sample that was never possible. At 10:00 pm, I asked what time the doctor would arrive for a re-evaluation and to tell me the blood test results. She said everything was fine. I told her if the blood tests were fine, why do I have to be there longer? I told her that I was leaving and if she continued to feel unwell, I would take her to the hospital near my house. She said that if I was okay, she would prepare the discharge paperwork. To my surprise, I was never re-evaluated by the doctor, nor was I told what she had. The most disappointing thing was watching the staff in the area who were on their personal phones texting the entire time. Every hour I would stop at the counter to follow up, and they were so engrossed in their phones that they didn't even notice my presence. I understand that there are a lot of patients, but if they weren't wasting time on their phones, they could have provided good service. read more

There is no rating!!! It was the worst experience i have ever experienced in my 48 years of life. My daughter was there for her college FH team and was taken there for severe pain in her stomach into her back after having ecoli about two weeks ago. Also sick vomiting and diarrhea, fever, etc. Waited with her coach in waiting for 3 hours -- it was a 5 hour drive for me, i got there at 5:30 -- 7 hours after her checking in, no IV -- no pain medicine, when i asked for the update from the nurse she kept walking and told me she didn't have one. When i flagged down the dr. he said did you tell anyone you were here? Yes twice and no one had any information. He said well we are waiting for her CT results, blood work, and urine -- i said what are you checking for, he said well to see whats wrong, no shit buddy. and then continued walking away. We spent 13 hours there and left with no answers and talked with someone a total of 3 minutes. When they finally gave her IV and pain meds, they unhooked her to go to the bathrooms and 2 hours later came back to hook her up and i said she is getting discharged, don't bother. oh she said okay. This hospital is a joke and they should be ashamed of themselves. NO BEDSIDE MANNER WHAT SO EVER. They did not want to be bothered, didn't ask her if she was ok, if she needed anything, or nothing. When someone is sick the last thing they need is an asshole nurse and dr. or to be acted like it doesn't matter and being pushed aside. These people should all be fired and the place should be shut down. No one, not one person was kind or even interested in what was going on. i paid them a lot of money for my daughter to be seen and treated -- the way they acted was a disgrace, they should be ashamed of themselves. if you don't like your job, quit -- go somewhere else. arrived at the E.R at 10pm as of writing this review it is 3:30am. many people have come in after my family and they have been seen and gone home yet here we sit. upon asking staff for an ETA we were told they are waiting for a vacancy then proceeded to call a another person who came in after us back to be seen. My father-in -law is on the fourteenth floor after suffering a stroke. His care in poor at best. Rings the buzzer for help and waits over a half hour for assistance. When I visited and was waiting in the hallway, I overheard several staff members stating he is a feisty one. Boy that is professional. As I looked down the hallway, I saw straw wrappers and various garbage on the floor. The bathroom in his room had feces on the toilet and the garbage was overflowing onto the ground. My grandfather was brought in for aspiration issues and had to be put on oxygen. The ICU was great. There was a nurse with him 24 hours. The staff was friendly and knew what they were talking about. Then they moved him to floor 16. My grandfather was on the 16th floor for one day. We went in the visit at 330pm. When we arrived my grandfather was covered in his own shit, and it was crusted which means it was there for a while, there was trash everywhere, and the staffs "excuse" was they were short handed and cant watch him. They assured us they visit hourly but then another family on the floor admitted no one had been in the room since noon. Which means they hadn't been there for 3 hours. If this had been a childrens hospital and a parent walked in on this the hospital would be liable for child abuse and neglect. But because my grandfather is an adult, no one cared. read more

So I've now been informed that the resident who tended to me in the ER last night at General was not only TOTALLY WRONG with what they claimed they saw in my CT scan, but they had also been told to have me moved over to Roswell Park and opted to send me home instead when I was having difficulty breathing & swallowing. I saw my doc at Roswell Park this morning, & they set my mind at ease, but I shouldn't have had to go through that. While BGH made it sound serious, Roswell explained that a large part of the problem was just post-op swelling & the fact that my body was rejecting the drain that had been placed in my neck after a total Thyroidectomy. I *GET* that BGH was busy last night, and that you guys needed to clear the beds, but be better. And seriously, some unsolicited advice from someone with NO BACKGROUND in the sciences: You might want to teach your ER residents the difference between a hematoma & regular post-op swelling. I had a terrible experience at this hospital in 2018 and suffered PTSD in addition to additional months long recovery from what was supposed to be a same day procedure. I was an admit from the surgical suite and treated like garbage for my 6 day stay. I have never been treated like this in my entire life. I heard nursing staff speaking of the shortage of pain meds and how they had to ration out what they had. I am in shock that in modern day America patients were forced to suffer like this and be treated worse than animals. Their shortage led to them gaslighting patients, shaming patients and making patients feel as though they were drug addicts if they asked for any pain management. This hospital is not accredited by the Joint Commission of Hospitals, I learned in the aftermath of attempting to file a complaint. I then attempted to file a complaint with the NY Board of Health and after it was submitted, received a form letter in the mail stating it was unsubstantiated, dismissing my real, horrific experience. We arrived at midnight with my father who is in excruciating abdominal pain. We sat next to a gentleman who had been there with kidney stones for 4 hours prior. Hours passed and staff were walking around, laughing, and making comments regarding length of wait time!!! One person said, "Hey, if they can't remember how long they have been sitting in there, don't tell them! They are just going to keep waiting......" People are sitting there in pain and nursing staff are making fun of them for waiting!!!!!!!!! NOBODY in the waiting room was taken to a room until 8am!!!!!!!! We waited EIGHT HOURS for help. I was not too impressed by Buffalo General. First of all, the person that did the surgery messed up my best friend's surgery so bad that she had years of hell. And then got re-done at South Buffalo Mercy and it was done properly. Now even if you blame that on the Surgeon, there was the following story. I've been here for out-patient surgery once, and it was okay. 3/5 experience. They weren't too friendly but at least nothing went wrong. However, I've also stayed overnight here for several nights with a friend and it did not go well. Here's the story: I stayed overnight with her to take care of her when she was recovering because she doesn't handle anaesthetics well at all. During the recovery process, they didn't even really know I was in her hotel room. I mean hospital room. I was pretty much hiding the whole time. And sometimes when you hide in someone's hotel room. I mean hospital room. You can hear how the nurses REALLY treat the patient. Okay I know that's creepy. I know, and I don't care. I listened to how some of these nurses and aides talked to her when she was passed out, or half passed out, and asking for water, and they were rude, they were abusive, they were brutal even. If she asked for too much, they would purposefully treat her rough (I could tell by her yelps of pain when they stuck her or changed her IV and stuff). They were also mad that she was there so long because she deals with anaesthetics so badly. Then they moved her in with the "crazy lady" and said it was because 2 males needed the room and they couldn't share with a female. I walked back by the room the next day before we left, and it was a single female that had been put in there... and she was a friend of the nurses (a former employee). So they look after their own, even though my friend was in way more need of help than the former nurse was, who was laughing and joking and walking around all the time. The crazy lady room they put my friend in was horrible. She was abusive and shouted the whole time and swore the whole time. No sleep was to be had. It was a tactic to try and get rid of her so we ended up going home before she was even properly better. I'd give them a 1 out of 5, but they didn't kill my friend... so there's always that. read more

A tale of two wildly divergent hospital visits. My mother and my father have now each experienced a stroke and thus visited Buffalo General's emergency room. In my mother's case, she experienced her stroke while a passenger in a car en route from a doctor's appointment. My father drove her to the hospital where she sat unmonitored and untreated for hours through the afternoon and evening hours. As insane as this sounds, she checked herself out after eight hours of waiting, went home, visited her neurologist the first thing the next morning, and thereafter spend several days at Sister's Hospital under his care. Wow, yes? My father's stroke occurred early on a Saturday morning, and he arrived at Buffalo General in an ambulance. He was seen immediately by a team of residents, interns, and surgeons, was promptly administered both a CT and an MRI on the day of his admission. We were told that he must stay at the hospital for several days, which we prepared well for. We were told the procedures that would be administered and given prompt updates on the scheduling and the results of each. Meanwhile, he's already regained full faculties (although a full array of testing has not been completed). My father is pretty comfortable. The rooms in Buffalo General are decent, if unspectacular. Amenities... are sparse though. Like an airline carrier, we were charged for an extra pillow and blanket. Food is Sodexho prepared and pretty nasty. (We've snuck in some contraband likely healthier but certainly tastier than the mac 'n cheese, and muffins, and pancakes that have arrived as part of his "cardiac" diet.) Television and phone must both be rented, though internet strong enough to stream Netflix and Amazon Prime is strangely gratis. I don't understand some of these efforts to nickel and dime us. My father and mother are the same age, possess the same insurance, experienced the same symptoms, et cetera. The differences seem to be their method of arrival and time of arrival (non-ambulance v. ambulance and weekday evening v. weekend morning). Accordingly, I would highly recommend to Buffalo-area Yelpers that they experience their medical difficulties on weekend mornings. 5 stars (and 1 star) for intake 3 stars for hospital food 5 stars for patient and family communication 2 stars for amenities 3 stars overall read more

This is a review only of various services / procedures you get done here, not a review as someone who has actually been admitted to the facility. I've been here 4 times now, always for an "in and out" type thing and always as the "companion/driver" of the person getting the tests. Each time they have called in advance to make sure all the paperwork was done, all names spelled correctly, and that the time was known. We have arrived, parked in one of the three easy access lots near the building and gone in. Each time the department was expecting us, they did not need anymore papers filled out and they called the persons in within a few minutes. Since we always arrive early, the few minutes means they were on time. While I have not gone past the waiting rooms I have been told that each time the patient was treated well, not left in a room alone, and that the procedures or tests were clearly outlined and questions encouraged. For those reasons 5 stars. Sadly the Tim Hortons that was in the lobby seems to be gone for the moment. And the magazines in the various waiting rooms either don't exists or are 5 years old. But it's all about the patients, not the companions. So 5 stars. 850 read more

My mom had several appointments in one day at the cardio vascular unit. The wait was long! Her appointment times were changed several times. She never even saw a dr and she had appointments with two. She was scheduled for an angiogram the next week at 11 am. No breakfast. She was not taken until 730pm! She got home after midnight . Today she had an appointment for 6 am! We had to get up at 415. She was not taken until 1230! I got two texts saying things were going well but it is now almost 4pm and I still have not heard from anyone ! I let the phone ring at least 40 times at the nurses station and no answer. Horrible . No regard for anyone's time. I understand there can be a wait . But 8 hours! If you schedule a 6am appointment why does it take 6 hours to be seen? Why did we not get a call? I will never use this hospital again if I have a choice. We will change doctors first. read more

I am very impressed by Buffalo General Hospital with the care and attention they provide to their patients! First arriving in the emergency waiting room after receiving a call of an unexpected emergency with a family member to discover the clean, bright, and empty emergency waiting room at 8pm. Every other emergency room I have waited in has been overly packed and nowhere to seat ... Plus usually 8 hour waits.... after spending over a month here (currently working on getting home to Canada) which seems to be impossible to find a Canadian hospital that isn't overloaded and will accept her... That's another story... Overall, I am thrilled with the outcome from this hospital. From the emergency room to the month in ICU, which they provided exceptional care there to being moved to a normal floor and having the same level of care provided. I am really happy with the level of care that has been provided and the hard work being done to help with getting transferred back to Canada. read more

I also overheard them talking about me during report which is right outside my door for gods sake. There is a place and a time to make fun of people who just came out of surgery. I worked as a nurses aide for almost 11 years i would never ever talk like this about people after a major surgery. Drs all stink also they put me on tylenol and motrin 12 hours after a main surgery. Hospitals are never happy places to be in the middle of the night, but it was smooth sailing here, quiet, clean, etc. Parking was a bit odd. We parked on the street, which I was skeptical about but I guess that's what you do here. There are definitely worse hospitals in the area so when we had to be in the hospital with my dad recently I was glad it was Buffalo General. The cafeteria has a lot of good options I'll be at not healthy ones. They have a really cool milkshake maker in the cafeteria if you need something sweet or if your patient does. Parking can be found on the street and in the ramp where valet is available. Buffalo General ER has become horrible, came here 10 years ago when our dog bite my wife in the face and the treatment was great. They got my wife stitched ups and a referral to a plastic surgeon, so she would not have any scars. Then last year our dog bite her again, this time with blood pouring from my wife face, we just sat in the waiting room for two hours. It seemed like no-one was being called back, it was like the ER was shut down for the night and they were just stacking up patients for the morning shift. We ended up leaving and going to Sisters, where we were taken care of right away, and my wife was treated, but because we waited so long she now has a scar on her face. Next time I guess we go right to Sisters even though it is much farther away. Yes our dog is on her second strike. read more
