Vegan breakfast- they had so much more but it's all I wanted .
    Parke B.

I was required to go to this hospital for my Surgeon , Dr Kathleen Keely Boyle. I had a full hip replacement at this hospital. Both Dr Boyle and this hospital are truly outstanding . I sat in the waiting room for like 2 minutes before they started prepping me for surgery, really good timing. A little overwhelmed, they explained directions slowly and went over them a few times. I was very nervous about being at a hospital , but they worked HARD to take that away. All of the medical people talked "to me" and not at me. Finally surgery ... time to really freak out. I was 49%sure I was going to bail and 51% chance of staying even though I was in the surgery theater . The nurses and tech were awesome!!! I never felt like meat on a slab (I've had operations before and definitely felt that way). The older male nurse (almost 30 years experience as I recall) was so cool and kept me from freaking out- explained everything and I felt welcomed! The surgeon (Dr Boyle) was on point as always, smart, quick witted, and it was very obvious this doctor was at the very top of her game. Before I knew it, I was in recovery - a place I had problems with at other hospitals . No problems here! They were awesome again, took time to address me directly and were very personable and made SURE I wasn't in ANY pain. I'm gf to my assigned room for the evening (1 night stay). The nurses on the 4th floor were awesome again. When I was hungry at 11pm- they found yummy food for me (BtW- the food is the BEST at this place!). As a Vegan they obtained great food for me- really rare for a hospital (see picture below). Finally, it was time to go home. The paperwork was streamlined and they DIDN'T make my ride wait forever while they looked for paperwork. It was all seamless and very efficient and I was with my ride home 2 minutes after he arrived. I've been in several hospitals in my life, this was the most organized, streamlined , and caring place I've ever been to. From the security guards showing me how to get from A to B to the top notched surgical staff and surgeon. I have no problems giving poor reviews and have many times in the past, BUT this is NOT one of those times. This St. Joes and The UB Medical orthopedic program gets my highest review possible.

Flowers sand thank you card from the head nurse and staff on the 4th floor recovery .. kindest gesture of a hospital I have ever seen!

So after reading some negative reviews, I was rather nervous to come here for my first time. I'm so…read moreglad my experiences were great and I can honestly say I would rather drive out of my way to come here than go to the hospital which is right around the corner from my house (Millard Filmore Suburban). My first visit here was for a pre-op appointment for a tonsillectomy about 1 week prior to surgery. My wait times were short for each thing I needed to do, from preregistration, to lab work, to chest X-rays, to a physical. Everyone was very nice and the experience was quite personable actually which is something I always favor (even paid triple tuition for small classrooms at a private college - perhaps not to smart but it is my preference!). My next visit was for surgery, in which lies my only complaints; everything was fine until after surgery. But my first nurse I had coming out of anesthesia sort of was coaxing me to give a lower pain grade than I truly felt. She was such a sweet sweet nurse and was wiping my tears away and just being so endearing so I don't feel she was doing it other than possibly a little pressure as her position and maybe many patients confuse their levels of pain because they are scared and nervous and emotional. Then, when I saw my last nurse Bob who saw me until the end of my stay as an outpatient, I felt very frustrated because I had an extremely painful tonsillectomy and I tried to nod my head yes and no to his questions and hold up fingers for my pain management and his response was "ok we are not going to give nods and hold up fingers I need to hear you respond". It was very frustrating and insulting and I remember looking to my friend giving the ride like "why aren't you speaking up for me?" But after my doctor who performed surgery stopped by to see me, Bob seemed a bit more understanding that my throat is a mess. I think maybe there should be a little meeting to discuss the effects of adult tonsillectomies because they aren't as common and the older you are, the more of a nightmare (it's a long, dreadful recovery that most adults over 30 describe as the most painful experience of their lives - and I can attest). Other than this situation, Bob was a nice nurse just doing his best. Again, I think some quick information sent out to the severity of this operation is needed and the nurses may be a bit more understanding. After these two experiences, I was going to leave a 4 star review but my re admittance to the hospital 3 days later really left me feeling so warm and fuzzy towards this hospital that they earned that last star back: So 4 days after surgery I absolutely could not take the pain anymore. I couldn't swallow at all and could barley breath due to swelling. I originally went to Millard Filmore because it was a Saturday when doc is closed and this is also waking distance from my home. I was informed my doctor is not in network there and I would likely need to be transferred to St Joes Sisters of Charity where my operation was done. Once they reached my doctor, I took an ambulance over there. Mind you, I was still in pain because they didn't give me very strong meds at Millard Filmore despite being there for hours. As soon as the ambulance got me to st joes I felt almost immediate relief! They quickly registered me in ER as I had to wait for a room and the doctor said "don't worry, we got more pain meds than pain you can ever have!" And I was given something that took away so much of my pain so fast! Ahhh relief! That's all I wanted since surgery! Once a room opened for me, I went up to the surgery recovery floor where I spent the night and was discharged by about 1:30 the next day. I had my own room with TV in ER. Once admitted to my overnight room, I had my own large room. It was wonderful! Not all rooms are alone so please don't expect this - I just got lucky! And yes they have TV with minimal channels, but enough options to please most. They provide a baggy with basic hygienic needs. And you can ask for earplugs, hospital socks, etc. at no extra charge. I recommend they offer eye masks as well because the lights can be very bright from even just the machines they hook IVs to .. let alone if you are sharing a room and sharing those disturbances from another patient being treated. Hopefully they will offer that sometime. The staff was all very nice to me. I loved my overnight nurse so much. I wish I could remember her name. But anyways, they did not give me a hard time at all about pain meds or doing things to make me comfortable. When it came time to discharge, I truly did not want to leave. Everyone was so efficient and caring. I was well taken care of since the moment I arrived and until this moment, I had no idea hospitals were even capable of being so wonderful! I just assumed everyone was too busy to be truly nice to anyone. Upon discharge, I was given a small plant of budding flowers and a thank you card for being a patient.

Well, they called there and they had a 6 hour wait. So we went to Degraff. Degraff was nice and small and not overwhelmed with people. It was nice to experience this. You'll tell security why you're there, fill out a little yellow form, and put it in a tray outside of the triage nurse window. While you're waiting, there is a TV on. Surprisingly, it was playing Psycho (the old Alfred Hitchcock movie). I'm not complaining at all, just was not expecting that! There is a station where you can borrow complimentary chargers, which was great, as I was not expecting this and my phone was low on battery. You'll give the machine your number and a credit or debit card from your phone (I think I used Apple Pay). This is just to assure you'll bring the charger back and will not charge you unless you don't bring it back on time (I believe it gave me 24 hours with it, if needed). It will give you the date and time to return by. Then, you'll just stick in any of the open ports and you'll get a text confirming your return (and a message on the screen where you returned it). The overall visit was very pleasant and went by quickly. We were in and out of the ER in 3 hours flat. This included a CT scan. The staff was incredibly nice and communicated well.

Shortly after, I was taken to a room where two other RN's, Bri and Jim administered to me and was overseen by Dr. Monique Mirshak, MD. We were sent there urgently by WellNow after staff saw how severely ill my son was. He was fainting, vomiting, feverish, and visibly deteriorating. But once we arrived at Macc, it was chaos. The waiting area was overcrowded and extremely uncomfortable--not just physically, but emotionally. My child, barely able to sit upright, was forced to sit for hours next to patients with open wounds, people screaming, coughing uncontrollably--utterly inappropriate conditions for a child in pain. And trust me I'm a tough broad, I'm not a Karen or someone with a stick up their ass, I'm patient and keep my thoughts to myself but lord have mercy with this place. I work in the medical field and was employed years ago at Mercy myself so I get it. It felt more like we were livestock waiting for slaughter than patients in need of medical care. We waited hours with no communication, no check-ins, and absolutely no compassion from the staff except are a few hours I've security officer asked my child if he'd like a blanket. Once we finally got into a room after being bypassed for hours, he was given minimal testing (bloodwork, an EKG, an X-ray), and again, more waiting--still no treatment. The doctor barely spoke English and gave a vague, "I think it looks fine" response after glancing at his tests, admitting my son was clearly ill but saying they were too busy to figure out what was wrong and to see his pediatrician. I'm like are you serious after all these hours and he's still in pain being sick that's all you have for me! He was ultimately given some liquid ibuprofen and sent home--still feverish, still weak, and feeling even worse than when we arrived after being forced to sit upright in a plastic broken down chair for hours. He vomited again as soon as we got home, and his symptoms have continued. Frankly, I regret ever walking through those doors. I avoid these ERs for exactly this reason--but I thought that surely, when it came to a child, care would be better. It wasn't. It was disorganized, dismissive, and borderline neglectful. I saw more urgency from the vending machine than your staff. The only person who showed basic competency and kindness was the EMT assisting with the blood draw--he communicated well, calmed my son during the draw and showed the kind of bedside manner every staff member should be trained on. Our nurse was a nice woman as well and I'm sure she did the best she could based on her capabilities. The Macc needs to do better. Pediatric patients deserve real medical care, not assembly-line treatment. I'll be submitting this complaint through all formal channels, and I sincerely hope you take it seriously. No parent should have to watch their child suffer like that in a facility claiming to provide emergency care. Tt one point, I thought I was in a prank TV show because I just couldn't believe looking around that facility that in the year 2025 this is our medical system, you have patients piled on top of each other in a tiny room many of which should be separated by some capacity, the security guard having a 3 course meal at the check in desk, staring at patients like a cartoon villain, creepy vibes. Speechless in the worst possible way. I'm sure this will go nowhere like most things in New York State but... At least I tried to advocate for my child.
