I've only been here one time -- and boy did this place make a bad impression! It was unclean and smelly. There was a layer of smelly grime on the table and ketchup blobs dried on the wall. The food is not god-awful -- but the odor and scuz are killer. In all fairness, I did not try the wings. Perhaps, I should consider carry out from here sometime, since others really seem to like it. If you want some greasy comfort food, I'd recommend skipping this place and walking a couple blocks to Edzo's. read more

The only place i know of in the Chicago area that serves classic Buffalo Wings. What I mean by this: -Fried, but not battered -Equal parts drumettes/wings -BONE LEFT IN (as far as I'm concerned, "boneless wings" are both an oxymoron and something that only sociopaths eat) -Buttery yet spicy sauce that invariably leaves the eater messy The one place in which this place breaks from tradition is by serving the wings with ranch dressing rather than bleu cheese, but trust me, you won't miss it. I've only ever ordered one thing here: suicide wings with waffle chips. I see no reason to change this. 90% of the time, this is exceptional and well worth the havoc it inevitably wreaks on my gastrointestinal system. 10% of the time the food is pedestrian, for one reason or another (typically wings are too small, or are swimming in excessive sauce. However, this latter issue tends to arise with suicide more than with other styles because it necessitates the addition of extra sauce). In summation: If you are craving wings, do NOT be tempted by the cleaner exterior and large televisions and take your wing craving to BWW's down the street. It is mediocre. If you're a wing lover buff joes is definitely the go to spot in the area. I've been coming here for over ten years and it's always delicious. I've noticed recently they've changed their sauce from a spicy buffalo to a more spicy BBQ type deal, but it's still really good. Another thing they've changed is their portions, which are pretty small now for what you're paying. They also have the best homemade oatmeal chocolate chip cookies. Anywhere I go, I always try the wings. Although I've had some great wings at a number of places, I always end up ranking Buffalo Joe's as one of the best I have ever had. They seem to have shrunk in size over the years, but I've noticed the same thing at a lot of other places too (in particular Buffalo Wild Wings - their wings look like they came off a sickly hamster). I have traveled all over the world, had wings from all over the United States, including in Buffalo, and hands down Buffalo Joe's are the best wings I have ever had. The wings and waffle fries were just as good as they were when I was a student and used to eat Buffalo Joes 4 days out of the week! The two girls who greeted me when I walked in were another story all together. They both had very nasty attitudes and seemed to be very unhappy with their jobs. One seemed much more interested in telling her co-worker about her previous nights Hennessy drinking exploits than providing anything remotely resembling customer service. I have been coming to Buff Joe's since 2006, and I must say that the quality of the wings and service is in rapid decline. The wings seem to be getting smaller and smaller(check out photos 11 and 12). Also the price is constantly on the rise. I've been there about three times and truth be told, I'm afraid to go back. Each time the wings have progressively gotten smaller. I looked at my friend's plate and found one that was literally the size of a Jolly Rancher. If they start supplying larger/better quality I will definitely boost up their rating but as it stands now a solid 3. Their sauce is tangy. I love spicy with a bit of sweet. The wings are cooked perfectly, nice and crunchy. Even the ranch tastes better than other places. The waffle fries are great but I'd stay away from the cheese sauce. They're not the biggest wings. They're not the meatiest. But, without question, they're my favorite wings. That's Buff Joe's in a nutshell. Personally, I LOVE spicy wings. I want to sweat when I'm eating. I want nasal passages as clear as... something that's really clear. Sure, you've read people rave about the suicide wings here (their spicy sauce with a heaping pile of jalapenos on top). They're not too bad. But I'm hear to tell you about the variety that aren't even on the menu: XXX habanero. To this day, I have not found a better combination of heat and flavor. Much like the suicide variety, the XXX habanero wings come with a mountain of sliced jalapenos. About those jalapenos: they are EASILY the best jalapenos in the world. I don't know how much of that is due to the fact that they're slathered in buffalo sauce, but I could eat these suckers by the spoonful. I look at them in the same light as Superdawg's grilled onions: a simple addition to a meal that takes it to the next level. Two final things that must be mentioned: - The ranch. Insanely good. When it comes to ranch, I definitely lean towards the more 'liquidy' side. Especially for wings. Buff Joe's does not disappoint - just get extras though, because you'll want it. And if you go XXX habanero, you'll need it. - Cheddar chips, all day, every day. It's like the opposite of my ranch preference: I despise drippy, nacho cheese on fries. Buff's uses some actual melted down cheddar. The final product is about as good as it gets in the cheese fries world. And such a delicious world it is. Ignore the haters and make Buff Joe's your #1 priority next time you're in Evanston. What that really means is a double order of wings, spicy with jalapeños too. Waffle fries loaded with a creamy cheddar cheese sauce. A large Royal Crown soda. The wings come with little ranch cups and some celery. Mini napkins are on the table. The area is nice and close to northwestern university. Buffalo Joe's wings are simply the best wings in the world. A couple of my friends explored the globe trying to find a superior recipe. They even went to the home of the original Buffalo wings in Buffalo, NY and could not find an equal. Their sauce is addictive. We use to think that they drugged the sauce in high school and when my group of friends went away from college one of the first things we missed was Buffalo Joe's wings. Definitely get the mild because you get the full taste of their national award winning recipe (not just for wings! all foods!). Me and my bf came here based off of Yelp reviews and both of us left extremely disappointed. First off, the place smelled like a bathroom. I tried to not think about it but honestly, the smell threw any appetite I had out the window. If you REALLY want to try this place, order it for take-out. I feel sorry for the quails that they are taking these wings off from because they're so small and cute...and their lives aren't worth taking for sub-par wings! I gave it two stars because the sauce was good. If they had meatier wings to couple with the sauce, the wings would be a lot better. We also shared cheddar chips (waffle fries) which were also not very good. The cheddar cheese that is used on the fries was gritty and thick. I'm a huge cheese person but found this kind to be really unappetizing and left over half of the fries untouched. If you like the thick and gritty cheese (my bf said it reminded him of the cheese used at Weiner Circle), then by all means, this is your place. Otherwise, I'd stick to the plain waffle fries. Overall, I've been to plenty of other places for wings that are significantly better than this place. So, I've been coming to Buff Joe's since I was in high school. That would mean that it's been about 15 years since I first tasted the succulent spiciness that is Buff Joe's sauce. I've introduced many people to this place, and never had I had anybody come out of here less than satisfied, which I think speaks to the quality of its food. I insist that everybody try the wings just once, even if they're not "wing people," just so they can have the experience. You'd be surprised how many of them are now "wing people" thanks to the gentle nudging! Every time I'm here, I tell myself I'm going to get something different...but when it comes down to it, I always have to go with my usual: single spicy, cheddar chips, and a mega size drink to wash it all down. Waiting for my food seems endless, and when I finally get to chomp down on my first wing, it's like tasting it for the first time all over again. There is a veritable explosion of spices in my mouth, and after the initial heat, the flavors come through like gangbusters. I tend to dislike wings that are hot for the sake of being hot. I find that they have little to no flavor once the heat passes, and for me, that sort of misses the point. The wings from Buff Joe's are fantastic for following up heat with flavor, and that to me is the hallmark of a good wing. Small wings? Perhaps, but I really don't care, because I've never left feeling any less than stuffed. And satisfied. Note: the suicide is actually not that spicy (by the name, you expect it to be crazy, but it doesn't even come close to the level of spiciness that Bdubs ranks some of their mid-high spice level sauces). Employees just don't care about the concept of serving and don't understand that the customer comes first. They practically threw my food at me when it was done.
