Got into town at a decent hour so Looked for something different from my normal. Good thing as my normal has closed. Anyway I love hotdogs and this place came up but also had gyros. I am trying to eat better maybe so went with the gyro. I was able to get to Bugsy's a little after 6pm which is key since they close a7pm. Only person in the place was Bugsy. Took my order and then sent me to go grab a seat. Since the place was empty that was easy. In about 10-15 minutes a very hot huge gyro and plate of fries shows up. Wow. I ate all the gyro but barely made a dent in the fries. The taziki (misspelled I know) sauce was delicious. The gyro was full of meat cooked so fine. Now the decor? Wow this place is retro. Definitely a Chicago fan also. Lots of memorabilia and stuff on the wall. The place is bright also. Bugsy is old school so not a chatter but efficient and effective. His restaurant is just like him. Old school perfection. No bull just dogs and gyros and home cut fries. An awesome trip back to the past. Short on glitz but huge on taste which is what counts. read more

Quite Place in Mt Vernon that has excellent food and great service, we were passing through on a trip and stoped in. The food was tasty

Never judge a book by its cover. The outside may not look like much but the food is soooo good. Living in Ohio and with someone who is from Chicago we are always looking for his Italian beef and Chicago dog fix. The prices are super cheap and most everything comes with thin crispy fries. Italian beef although it was not the original gonnella rolls the homemade Italian bread made by the owner was spot on and held up very well after the sandwich was dipped in the aju, full of flavor giardinieria and topped with cheese. Chicago dog was also spot on and really good. Either the poppy seed buns but you won't miss it Italian sausage was also a really good choice. Served on the same bread as the Italian beef Pizza puff. I had the gyro and it was delicious! Tzatziki sauce was homemade. The meat was the right combination of tender to crispy and nicely seasoned. The pita was fresh and ever so slightly grilled. Tomatoes were fresh -- everything was good. Recommended. read more

I went out of my way a little bit to go to this place cause I do love hot dogs. I was not disappointed as everything was fresh and tasty. Nothing exotic about it, but it was good and filling. It looks like it's been here for a long time has a lot of room inside to set and a good selection on the menu. What a nice surprise to see a Chicago dog house in southern Illinois. Looks like it could have been transplanted from Halsted street. They have a drive up window and they serve all the dog house favorites. Gyro is a favorite and the pita bread fresh and chewy. Big portions and reasonable prices. Nice change up from burgers and cheap pizza. Only issue is the fries. Mine were rather limp, otherwise no complaints. Much rather visit a local place with an interesting menu than the fast food joints. read more

It looks suspicious from the outside but I would totally recommend giving this place a shot if you're looking to get a hot dog! You go in and honestly I don't think I've ever seen customers here. The menu is extensive, offering more than simply hot dogs. I've never really seen a Chicago dog so this was interesting. Alot of vinegar based vegetables and this radioactive green relish. I don't know if I'll come back again because I'm not really a huge fan of this type of hot dog but if you're a fan I highly recommend. We get the Italian beef every time we go. It's pretty good for this area. I'm from Chicago and there is a difference from this Italian beef and what you really get in Chicago. I still recommend. Owner says he is from Chicago but Food is still different. His food is good though. Unfortunately I think his location is a bad one and he isn't as busy as he should be. Locals all run to west end of town and forget about this small place why over on east end. Shame really as it has to be a struggle to make it. It was missing poppy seeds on the bun... other than that it was the real deal. It even came wrapped in Fries! Just like the old days on the south side! Don't let the looks of the place throw you. The food is really good. The prices aren't bad. They have canned soda which is really nice and the price is very reasonable. The restaurant isn't fancy but it's clean. The drive thru speaker is broken but you can pull up to the window and place your order. There is plenty of seating inside. read more

Home run!!! This place is the hidden gem of Mount Vernon. Being from Chicago I have extremely high standards when it comes to places throwing Chicago in their name. Bugsy's delivers. The owner is very nice and we chatted for a few minutes about Da Bears before I gave my order. I had the gyro and it was stuffed. Great flavor oozed with every bite. My date had the Philly and I took a few bites of it. The pizza puff was just like the ones I grew up on. I will definitely be back. Like a true Chicago hot dog joint (remember Demon Dog's?), the best food is always found in the most unassuming of locations. I had a Chicago dog, fries, and onion rings. Everything was great! It might be the first time since I left Chicago that I have had a comparable experience. Called them after waiting 1 1/2 hours. They told me I was next. 1/2 hour later the food showed up. 2 hours total for a small "rip off" sandwich and cold fries. I get to this area often. Vernon offers, families will love the reasonably-priced and authentic Chicago Dogs. The fries that come with the dogs were made out of locally grown potatoes, and they tasted amazing.
