A friend suggested we hit this place up, and what a cool spot! I love finding these little gems! It's affordable and high quality coffee in a very unique and interesting space. Upon moving here a year ago to the UW far from home (ohio) and knowing literally no one in this area, as the pandemic fell upon us, I happened upon this neat store..It has kinda become a "home base" for me on the ave, just about every other morning i come down the hill from my morning walk & i take in it's beautiful little outdoor sitting area as the sun rises to hear my audio books and my husband makes trips up later in the day to purchase these delicious rolls for our breakfast and the paper. One star because you have to. This is an otherwise cool little news stand, with an interesting selection and an old school vibe. My husband likes to buy footie magazines here. The EPL season starts this weekend, and we're excited to see how Chelsea does under Frank Lampard, so he set off for Bulldog News this afternoon to buy a few mags. Alas, today he had to deal with an obviously RACIST clerk, and will never be going back. So, some of you will know the drill. You're in a store and you're the only POC there. The clerk shadows you - sometimes more conspicuously, sometimes less. After following you around for a bit, casting barely-veiled side-surveillance-eye, the clerk then approaches to "ask if you want help." The clerk has asked precisely NO ONE ELSE if they want help. They are all white, so s/he doesn't feel a need to shadow them, or make it known to them that S/HE IS THERE, WATCHING... you know, in case, as a POC, you wanna do a little light stealing, or something. (For what it is worth, and it should not even matter, my husband is a Black man who looks to be in his early fifties. He's tall and fit, wears professor specs, and is pretty much always dressed better than anyone else in the room. Today he was in neat khakis, blue suede driving mocs, and an expensive-as-hell light seersucker shirt.) My husband asked the clerk what she was doing. She spluttered that she just wanted to know if he needed help. It was obvious that that wasn't what was up. He left. And as above, he is never going back. To make a long story short. I picked our team bat from the post office and had a coffee at the make shift park in front of there store. I forgot the bat on the bench. Owner spotted it and stored it for me after I left a number on the bench for the lost bat. What a wonderful neighborhood I live in that we all look out after each other. Best newsstand in Seattle that definitely has a better selection than regular stores. There are tons of hard to find magazines that i haven't seen anywhere else and they even have a decent selection of UK and international magazines as well. The owner can always get you magazines you need !. I will definitely will be coming back again for my monthly magazine runs. Coffee, Pastries, and my favorite croissant sandwiches . KILLING TIME, IF YOU GOT IT! Back in the days when I use to attend the UW and worked at the bookstore I would kill time at Bulldog newstand either between classes or between classes and work. Kind of reminds me of those outside new stands in big cities like NYC but minus the outside part and not on a rolling cart. I would always go to Barnes and Noble to read some of the magazines but Bulldog News has international magazines. And they had some Filipino Magazines too. I love bulldog news so much. An icon of the Ave, they have super friendly baristas and great coffee (better than Starbucks!) and there's never really a wait. I'm not super into magazines but they have so many different ones that even I like looking at - there really is something for everyone there. They just started a bakery and the woman who runs it is completely wonderful. She makes KICK ASS cinnamon rolls - vegan and regular - that are everything you could want. Bulldog News is a fantastic store for either grabbing coffee, a snack, or something to read between classes. More than a newsstand, this is a BIG neighborhood store. With a few thousand square feet of retail space, you'll find something to read at Bulldog News. I was impressed with the variety and feel silly that for years I had thought it might be mostly marketed to UW students because of its name and location. Of course it's a good resource for students but the selection is not limited to the college demographic. Next time I'm in the U Dist I'll pop by and scan the magazine section. This place once saved my life. Is there a better review? IS THERE? I was out with a bunch of strangers in my 20's drinking all night long and generally doing the types of things guys who dream about being a pick-pocket do. When I was invited back to one of these complete strangers apartments over the Ave. It was far too late in the game before I realized that I was the only person in the room who had completely and totally forgotten to meet a nice kisser for the evening. Couples everywhere and the temperature in the room increased ten fold... time to vacate, or contemplate alternative lifestyles. I could have either sat there until my brain popped, or gone for a cab. #2 please. I step out on to the void that is The Ave on Sunday morning, and there I was. Nothing and nobody, anywhere! Or not... AHHH! Three feet away from me covered in shadow was the largest man you've ever seen staring at me like I was wearing pasties made of $100 bills. (which incidentally I might have been... as I said... it was a long night). I jumped, startled, and he mumbled something so perfectly horrible that I will only talk about it after drinking 23 mandarin tonics. And even then I can hardly get through the tears. That's right, the number is 23. Trust me. I ran. I ran fast. I ran as fast as I could before my muscles would start making audible noises. He pursued. Fast. ...Now here comes today's FUN FACT! At 6am on Sundays, how many places do you think are open? One. ONE! Let me set the stage for you. Monday night. Midterm paper due Tuesday morning. Notes covering 60 pages for other lecture due same day. Cue frantic scrambling and an all-nighter to finish everything because you have two jobs and a full schedule at school and no time for anything at all. Ever. So obviously, this morning, half asleep, I desperately needed a good espresso to jolt me awake. I walked over to this convenient little stop on the Ave and the barista behind the counter took me order almost immediately and I got to watch him craft my espresso. Handing me my little cup of triple shot, I breathed in the delicious aroma. Oh sweet Jesus, Mary and Joseph this was exactly what I needed. And then I took a sip. Oh god. I almost lost it. This is the best espresso you will find on the Ave, for a decent price ($2.90). I'm sitting in class, awake, having had the most delicious and full-bodied espresso I've ever tasted in the U District. A reason why I didn't feel so bad about my midterms today. Almond croissant? Helloooo~ Absolutely delicious. I love Bakery Nouveau's twice baked almond croissant, but those things are monstrous in size, and a bit far from where I live. This place had just the right size. And when the kind mister warmed the croissant up for me, wow - how is it possible for such beauty to exist? (I realize that these pastries are not made by them, but I am commending them for their choice in partnership.) And then the chai. The chai. My goodness, the chai... I am smitten with the chai that was made for me today. I judge a place depending on their chai (because I am a very poor coffee drinker; I prefer teas) and what I had today made me feel so warm and happy, I took my midterms feeling absolutely amazing. (I had the sweet chai, by the way.) I have tried various chais throughout the U-District and my opinion is that this place makes the best one. I will definitely be returning - perhaps even earlier in the morning to cozy down and hunker over a good read, sipping and crunching away at the deliciousness that is this place. read more

I love to indulge my magazine and international periodicals here! Its got that great urban appeal without the annoyance of 'stroller-moms', 'seat-hogs', and ridiculously long purchasing lines. Its got a nice mix of students and general passersby. I notice that Bulldog really makes the efforts to carry local/indie publishing's. You can also grab a drink at the small cafe inside. Coffee is meh, but the fresh squeezed lemonade is fantastic! Forget Borders/B&N and get some more local taste in the U-District. read more

Five stars for great hand pulled expresso latte! This is the real deal everyone. Staff were great and friendly! They make you feel so welcomed there. Their sizes are a lot larger than other places. I had an 8oz latte iced and it felt like a 12oz. I also ordered an iced 12oz latte and it was given in a larger cup that was much more than a 12oz. This place is great!
