We were visiting Spearfish. I just so happened to have a birthday around the same time. We found this little gem hidden between Sturgis and Spearfish. If I am being perfectly honest, we were a little skeptical when we pulled up. We thought we were going to a "city" style steak house. I had the flat iron pork steak, which was delicious. We also ordered the chicken strip and chicken alfredo. Both were also delicious. Harley was our waiter/bartender/host. Very hospitable from the moment we walked in. It's more bar than steakhouse, but don't let that fool you. The food here is excellent. We were so happy to have found this little gem. read more

Nice atmosphere, was towards the end of the night so it was quieter than usual. Service was great. Waitress was very attentive. Steak was small (could have been the cut) but cooked correctly and tasted good. No need for sauce. Price was on point with meal. Definitely would go back. read more

We are on vacation from California and on our way from deadwood to Keystone. Decided to stop at this little town. The steakhouse looked like it had excellent reviews and did not disappoint. I decided to go with the 8 ounce sirloin was phenomenal cooked perfectly nice and pink on the interior. And the seasoning was true perfection It melted in my mouth with every bite . The only negative was the baked potato. It was not quite cooked as much as I would like. Salad was delicious with homemade honey mustard dressing. Probably one of the best steaks that I've had. Came for the great reviews on the steaks. $49 ribeye. Hand cut, allegedly. 16 Oz ribeye was cut so thin I would have made cheese steaks out of it. Never seen a groxery store steak so thin! Had the tail, and the head fat on it. Go for the drinks. Skip the food. Grilled chicken sandwich was lacking meat. Big bun, no meat. Great servers! read more

What a great local place!! We were staying at a house across the street, so took the party to Bullwacker's. Fun local bar with a beautiful back bar, great local waitress, jukebox, dart board, couple casino games, and an outdoor patio. The drinks are SO CHEAP. We got a round of shots for four people- all top shelf liquor- for only $18. The food was good diner type quality and the appetizers were a treat! I have a story to tell and it's not a good one. On August 16 I entered into a restaurant to have a meal with a few friends with Ares my service animal in Whitewood, South Dakota after having a few very successful fundraising events for Shorty's Rescue. We enter this establishment that I've been in several times throughout the few years coming to South Dakota with no problems. But apparently we've never been in this restaurant with the owner being there. So this evening we entered with a few of my friends and the owner Mark told us that we can't be in this restaurant with my service animal. One of my friends tried to explain to him the definition of a service animal and why he was here but he still said no. We ended up sitting in our table and ordering our drinks with the waitress when this arrogant and disrespectful owner of this establishment came to us and told us that we must leave because my dog is not allowed in his restaurant. We tried to educate him on the laws, not only of the federal statutes but the statues of the State of South Dakota. His reply to me was this is my business these are my rules and you must leave. Instead of causing a scene we politely left his establishment and went to the police department of Whitewood, South Dakota. The entire staff of the Whitewood Police Department went out of their way to help us out to file a complaint against this establishment. The arrogance and rudeness of the owner of this place has blown me away because I haven't seen this type of discrimination in years. I feel obligated to let everyone know what type of discrimination this owner of Bullwackers saloon is doing. This is why I will never give up what I do. This is why I have been on the road for 16+ days fighting for the rights of these animals and raising funds for our rescue. This is why I have been involved in rescue and animal rights for 20 years. What is your opinion of this situation? What would have you done? I will never give up my legal right for this breed and for the rights of people with disabilities to have a service animal to assist them with their disability. This is the information of the place we were refused service from their Facebook page. Give them your polite and respectful opinion of what they did wrong. My family was on a cross country trip. We stopped into Bullwacker's after funding it on Yelp. It's a historical bar from the western days, and it's so quaint inside. The waiter (who I'm pretty sure is the owner) was so nice and told us all about the history of the place...even pointed out bullet holes in the ceiling. So cool! It was very kid friendly place as well. My children loved it! My husband was looking forward to trying a steak. He ordered the ribeye, and it was absolutely melt in your mouth amazing. I got the Buffalo burger and it was wonderful as well. I would recommend anyone coming through Whitewood, SD to try Bullwacker's. read more

My friends and I were in the area of Whitewood for the Leading Ladies/Dakota Spirit Marathon. We needed a good pre-race meal, so we chose Bullwacker's because we wanted a good steak. We were not disappointed! All three of us ordered the eight-ounce aged sirloin with fries and a salad. The portion sizes were perfect. The steak, which we ordered rare, was cooked to perfection. It was slightly busy, and there was only one person there working the bar, but she did a fantastic job serving us. We all agreed the food was delicious, and we would definitely eat here again. read more

We both got the rodeo burger and it was clear the burgers were homemade, well seasoned, and not over cooked. We're not drinkers, but the bar was extensive. We were traveling and Yelped to find somewhere to eat. Thank you YELPers! We got here late so there was only one other couple, Bullwhackers was fun to look at all the historian the walls, and the building itself. We had wonderful service. Our server explained how the salad dressing was made in house, where the beef came from, etc. The meat melted in our mouth it was so tender, flavorful and cooked to perfection. I'd say definitely check this place out. We went in early August 2018. It was crowded due to the Sturgis rally but the food was excellent the service fast and correct. We had lunch here on a day trip. The town has lots to shop for many store, many t shirt places and this place is apparently a local type of place. Go you'll like it. read more

We seen other reviews on this saloon and they appeared to be 4 and 5 stars so we thought that we would give it a try. Stopped by on our way back from Devil's Tower around 2pm and the place was a little crowed but had seating in the back area. We got waited on after about 10 mins and then ordered our food. Waiter came back out and said that they were out of baked potato that was with our Big Bull 16oz Ribeye. Well I had to settle for fries instead. Doesn't make sense that you would run out of potato's at 2:00pm in the afternoon. Our steak took about 25 mins to cook. Now by this time we drunk most of our drinks and after the food was delivered we never seen the waiter again to get any refills. Another issue was the flies were terrible as we tried to swat them away while eating. As for our drinks we never got any refills as he was to busy helping the ones that just arrived. Must have a staff shortage going o nor something. The only descend part of this experience was the steak was good and that's why we gave it a 2 stars instead of 1. After finishing and fighting off flies I had to go track down the waiter and asked for our check. I guess we will go elsewhere next time. read more

I will ALWAYS come back here for dinner. I had the black and blue burger and it was the best burger I've had in South Dakota. Our poor waitress was by herself on a Saturday night but she could not have been more amazing! She ran the bar, waited tables with a smile, and took the time to take a picture of us. This is one of the oldest bars in the Black Hills. It is conveniently located. However their style of cooking was very disappointing to our group. Everything was over cooked. We went 2 times during our stay nearby. Even a bar pizza was burned. Just can't recommend this for food. read more

a letdown...supposed to be oldest operating saloon in the area but has no atmosphere, cold unwelcoming interior...old banquet chairs and tables...not comfortable enough to sit and soak up atmosphere...you just wanna eat and leave. the food cold be better... a lot of drop in the fryer stuff that's expensive, $9.00 baskets small on servings. Guess it's not bad if you just wanna load up on alcohol at the bar...kinda sad. read more
