The surrounding area was green, peaceful, and honestly breathtaking. Once inside, the reception area was just as impressive, with very friendly and welcoming people who immediately made us feel at home. The lobby had that warm, cozy, inviting feel that makes you want to slow down and enjoy the place instead of simply treating it as somewhere to sleep. Our room was very comfortable, and we had a beautiful view of the hills toward the rear of the hotel. The Lodge is also a casino, although we didn't really participate in any gaming. We were much more interested in enjoying the hotel itself, the dining area, and all of the amenities, which were absolutely wonderful. One of our favorite surprises was the trolley. It regularly stopped at the hotel and took us right into historic Deadwood, dropping us off at various sites around town. It made sightseeing incredibly easy and meant we could leave the car behind and simply enjoy ourselves. Just a marvelous place from beginning to end. Beautiful setting, comfortable rooms, welcoming people, great amenities, and a wonderfully convenient location for exploring Deadwood. Definitely a five-star stay.

Once inside, though, we really liked the atmosphere. It had that comfortable, lively sports-bar feel without seeming overly loud or chaotic. We were there during a busy holiday weekend, so I was expecting a long wait. Surprisingly, it wasn't bad at all, which was especially appreciated because by that point we were absolutely famished. We ordered a sirloin and a T-bone, both with shrimp on the side. The steaks were nicely seasoned and had plenty of flavor. Were they the most memorable steaks we've ever had? Probably not. But hunger can be a wonderful seasoning all by itself, and on this particular evening they tasted pretty darn good. Then came dessert. Chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream. Simple, classic, and exactly what we wanted. After a long day and a hearty dinner, that combination really hit the spot and was a perfect way to finish the meal. Oggie's turned out to be a great place to settle in, have a good meal, and relax without ever having to leave the hotel. The kids and husband had milkshakes, and they were made quickly, and everyone loved them. They have a bunch of local beers. I enjoyed my Rapid City made beer and enjoyed a sip of my husband's Spearfish beer. I had a burger, which was perfect. The fries were good. I also had some of my daughter's hot wings. The only person who finally came over to help was a kind woman who had been sweeping on the other side of the restaurant. She stopped what she was doing because no one else would. I have 13 years of waitressing experience, so I completely understand how frustrating last-minute orders before closing can be. However, that's never an excuse to treat paying customers with disrespect. We called before closing, were polite throughout the interaction, and simply expected basic customer service. If taking an order 30 minutes before closing and acknowledging a customer at the counter is too much to ask, then maybe customer service isn't the right fit. Being busy is understandable. Arriving in Deadwood the first place we go to is the # 10 saloon, when we walked through the door we were immediately told the if you are not drinking we had to donate to the bar. Not a welcome to Deadwood just a give us money or leave. I was embarrassed that I had talked this place up, and we were greeted so terribly.
