What's changed is the neighborhood... The central business district used to be well located for site seeing but pretty dead atmosphere wise. Just corporate buildings and workers. Quiet at night and silent on the weekends. Now, it's an amazing hub of activity with residents, coffee shops, restaurant, bars, shops and more plus the corporate buildings. The main drag, George Street, is now pedestrian only and relaxing to walk along. We look forward to returning again somehow, some way, in the future! We already agreed Mantra 2 on Bond Street will be our destination again! The newly upgraded rooms were much nicer, it gave me a shabby modern feel. Comfortable bed , marble Bathroom and mini Refrigerator to name a few things. Customer service was polite and swift in their response. They also have a restaurant called the Curve inside the Hotel next to the lobby. This Hotel is located In Chinatown, it's close to shopping, Restaurants, and is walking distance to Sydney Harbor.

There is also an armoire and small table with 2 chairs. It has a electric kettle with some coffee and tea options. There were two windows with opaque glass. So light in but no view. The double bed was soft and clean. The room was good enough for the two nights I stayed. It's a step up from a hostel-which I had also been considering for this trip. The neighborhood is ok. Not particularly charming but didn't seem dangerous either. It's 2 easy blocks from the Central Train Station. There are a couple quaint bars and several food options nearby, including a 7-11 open 24hrs. This place got the job done and that's all I needed. If you are traveling on a shoestring, this hotel could work.

I do agree with other reviewers that there is a bit of a damp musty smell throughout the building, but they do spray the halls a lot to cover it up. On the 15th floor, you can find the "gym" (very small), a very nice rooftop pool, and a sauna, as well as 2 sets of restrooms which I found to be exceptionally clean when I used them. There is some kindof construction going on as you walk up to the pool, but I don't think it's related to the amenities at all, so it didn't bother me. There is a thai place on the main floor (MD, I did not eat there), as well as guest parking and laundry on I think the 3rd floor. Washers and dryers, as well as a machine to buy laundry detergent. Finally, in the lobby there are a few seating areas, lots of literature on trips and adventures around Sydney, and a mostly 24-hour concierge who can help you with things you need. The location - I should have started here - is absolutely perfect. You are at the southeast corner of Hyde Park, so you can get to the park, museums, Martin Place, Darlinghurst, Surrey Hills, etc. - all the cool neighborhoods are within walking distance, 10-15 minutes. I actually walked home from the Opera one evening and it was a lovely stroll. You're also next door to the Pullman Sydney, which you can use as a landmark, and ladies - you can have cabs drop you off there so they don't really know where you're staying if you're alone! I would absolutely stay here again and recommend this place to my friends. At the end of the day, you have to balance location, amenities, and price... and Hyde Oaks wins on location and price for me!

Parking was an extra $50 ASD per night, but most of the parking downtown is pricey.... we made it in to their tiny garage and found a spot. Got to the room and didn't know how to use the key fob for the lift...eventually got to the room and the key card wouldn't work. Got into their tiny lift again to talk to the front desk and waited a while because their tiny lift can only fit 11 persons.... and I think there are only two lifts. Plus the 2nd floor is some massage school packed with Vietnamese students going up and down the lifts...... ugh! Anyway, we finally get to the room and ...... it's mediocre. The plumbing wasn't that great, the ac kept making this weird vibrating noise periodically that kept me up the first night, I had a view of the top of another building (and I was in the 3rd floor), the oven/stove thing didn't fit the counter right so it was hanging. Oh ya they charge for Wi-Fi after tricking u into using their 30minute complimentary Wi-Fi. Let's just say all in all, for the price it beats staying in a hostel, however, maybe next time I would consider paying the extra $$. I think we paid $160/night USD and then an extra $50 ASD a night for parking. Their pool was ok, the route to the pool and sauna was a little sketchy.. and their fitness room was tiny. The weather was nice so I utilized the outdoors for running. Would I stay here again? Maybe not, but I wasn't entirely disappointed because the location was the best thing about this place. The location is right around the corner from the 2nd largest Westfield in the Southern Hemisphere and there are plenty of restaurants around for convenience.
