The real wedding-saving happened when rain seemed likely to descend on the small backyard wedding we'd planned. Two days before the event, Evan offered her own lovely country-in-the-city house as an alternative venue, free of charge, and then seamlessly reorganized everything. She let my step-sister and mom go wild decorating her house with our own flowers and a bunch of crazy puppets and art, as well as rearrange the furniture in the living room to accommodate the ceremony. Evan set up an outdoor dining area that was cozy, intimate, and safe from rain. The pictures we took in her amazing garden (it didn't actually rain the whole day) are perfect. Now we're so glad that it rained! And I haven't even mentioned her food yet--it was transporting! Honestly, it was one of the best meals I've ever eaten: artfully arranged, beautifully served, and transcendentally delicious. Many of the guests said it was the most beautiful wedding ceremony they'd ever been to, and the day will persist as one of the most magical experiences my husband and I have ever had. Engroff's was able to seamlessly and extremely professionally cater my event at the very last minute. Their event coordinator was able to meet with me Monday (after I contacted them Friday afternoon) at the venue, offer multiple suggestions about the menu, we set a menu...and when I mentioned I was hosting ANOTHER event the following day (May 1st), informed me they would also be able to cater that event was well, if I was interested. Both events went off without a hitch and after receiving multiple compliments about the food (and Engroff's being extremely professional and understanding about how stressed I was due to the first caterer falling thru), are now my caterer of choice, bar none. I sprinkled some sweet scented vinaigrette across the top and moved on to a warm dish of moist (some people have an aversion to this word, but is was) chicken. I may have added more than my share. I next encountered a mountain of flaky pull apart garlic bread. It was still warm (from the oven in my mind) and couldn't wait to peel the layers into my mouth. It may not be pc to do, but oh well. Finally, the glory of dessert. It's why everyone pays for lunches with subpar food. The hope that the dessert trumps what you have already eaten. The calories don't count as dessert because they are part of the meal. No guilt in my book. Cupcakes!! With a generous helping of delicious sky blue frosting and a little sunflower on top. Never have I been served kid friendly cupcakes at a business luncheon before. I sat down with my small hill of greens, fresh fruit, chicken, biscuits, and the glorious cupcake. I tried to rush through the meal but the salad was fresh, the dressing tangy, the chicken melted in my mouth. I used my fingers to peel the biscuits flaky layers and enjoyed the buttery taste. And finally, plate cleared as my mother taught me, I was alone with the cupcake. Against my childlike urges, I so maturely took my fork and cut a small bite from it's edge. Then another and another. Finally, I was left with an empty foil wrapped. I took my finger, wiped the frosting from the liner and promptly stuck it in my mouth. So much for manners! I have no recollection what the lunch meeting was about, but you can bet I will pay the association fee for the year and enjoy that lunch every month.
