I recently participated in an online auction with Burchard Galleries. My bid was not accepted however it took 5 days for me to find out and I had to reach out to them twice, they never contacted me with the results. Also they started with an opening bid that the consigner would not accept! In my opinion they wanted a bidding war that they didn't get. I have experience with auction houses and have never experienced one like this. I'm not sure I would even call it an auction house? They are not practicing in a reputable manner. I don't trust Todd; think he ripped me off..valuable art that he was supposed to auction went for such low prices that I think he bought them and resold them. A few things to note, they charge 30% of the hammer price plus 17-23% of the total hammer price so if a buyer pays $123 for an item you get $70. I deal with a lot of auction houses and the guy that spoke with me seemed very dishonest compared to other auction houses. In other words they take a cut of 76% of what you get but they explain it to you in a manner you think you are getting much higher. This place is one of the more dishonest experiences I have dealt with in an auction house and I've dealt with hundreds of auction houses before. I would strongly avoid dealing estates with them. For starters, Sotheby's charges just 10% of the hammer price for selling fees and is a much better auction house for sale prices. When someone is purposely deceptive when dealing with you it's a sign of they would take advantage of you when they can. If you are elderly or selecting an auction house for your elderly parents I would strongly discourage you from dealing with this auction house as you almost certainly have far less experience then me and will be taken advantage of. I made a yelp account just to post this, I am so mad. If I could give Todd Burchard and the rest of them ZERO stars, I would. Even one star is too many for them. I gave them permission to auction 2 very expensive pieces of jewelry. I had given them an appraisal, but they needed a current one, which they charged $100.00 for- $50 for each item. The appraisals were relatively close to my original appraisal, together an appraised value of $11,750.00 I wanted to have a set price of $6,000.00- I will not go below that I told them. Jeff Burchard said it was a bad idea to have a price set high, and that it wouldn't be a worry. My check from them was for $800.00. They didn't call me to tell me the items sold, probably because they knew I would be really upset. Does anyone know how to begin an investigation? Someone on here said that they might be buying the things themselves, and reselling them at higher prices. That makes a lot of sense, and might be why they talk you out of a high reserve. Really wish I checked here before letting them give my jewelry away. read more

If you never use yelp to make a decision, please at least heed my warning! DO NOT USE BURCHARD GALLERIES!! They charge 30% per item they "sell", as well as a $20 fee per item for the picture to be displayed on their auction website. They also charge an 18% buyer's premium, so they are lining their pockets with almost 50% of the proceeds. Fine, whatever you say? They deserve 48% for very little work? Believe me, they don't do much. I have a personal story for you to consider. I brought to Burchard's 3 fur coats, several items of jewelery, and an antique bronze figurine. One ring, a ring which they charged me $50 to appraise, according to Burchard's, appraised at $18,500. "You hit the lottery!" exclaimed one Burchard. "Trust us" was the reply when I requested a reserve of 8K, and they suggested 3K. They assured me the ring would go for much higher, why it might even invoke a bidding war. Had I only known, and listened to the one yelp review that has been helpful to 4 other people, I wouldn't have had a mini stroke when I contacted them several days after the auction to see what the good news was. Ready for my thousands, I looked past their blatant disregard for my time, as Todd Burchard was scheduled to come look at some pieces of art at my home, and rescheduled 3 times, being late by 45 minutes when he did finally show up. I ignore the fact that I had to follow up with them regarding the appraisal. They had time to post it on their website, estimating it would sell for between 9-12K. They did not have time to inform me, again, I was looking past all these warning signs. Several days after the auction I, once again, had to call them to follow up on the sale. Waiting for my good news, I was completely devastated when the voice on the phone replied with the "Good news" that I have a check coming to me for $3K. The big, lottery worthy ring? Sold for $70 past their recommended reserve. Bottom line, a ring, as well as many other valuable items estimated at approx. 22K were sold for about 4K. That is an 18 THOUSAND dollar difference. It is also suspected that the Burchard's themselves are purchasing these items, after conning a low reserve, and then reselling at the actual true value. Quite a scam. I have stated my displeasure, only to be told that they would get back to me, which they have not done. I have waited patiently for almost a month for them to find a resolution for their either egregious error, or their complete and total lack of knowledge on the true value of the items they are selling. I mean, I did have that appraisal......no guesswork required, and yet.... So here we are. Ponder it. And then go anywhere else. read more

Jeff told me there are videos of the auctions which I could request. I did, several times. Never received them & gave him 3 xtra days before writing this. The dept of consumer services told me that Jeff will allow me to only question the whereabouts of 5 items! I wrote him about this, reminded him I have questioned the whereabouts of more than 5 items many times over but again, have yet to get an answer from him. I also asked if the answers were going to be any different -no response! I understand the other complaints made b/c I too am a victim. I never thought my dealings w/them would come to this. How do you claim to be a trusted member of the business community? Why do you claim that your core business values have always been honesty & integrity? Do not use this Auction House, They are not trustworthy in fact their crooks. I took my items to them to get their appraisal and have them auction off. They told me they were interested in putting the items up for auction - then they started devaluing me and the items. At this point I left unsure if I did the right thing. Once the items hit the block - they did not even mention the most important features of any of the items AT ALL and I got Nothing - I did not even get their own expected value $5500. and I received $300. Be very very careful when dealing with this company. I though I had did my homework, by watching their on line auctions for two (2) months and then called them , they sent out a lady to look at my things and I told her the only reason I was listing my things we them was that they had on line auctions. She picked thur my jewelry vintage,designer, sliver it came to almost 1/2 a lunch bag full, a oil painting, a gold stamp collection leather book full also 1st stamp of each and history. ant. piano stool and a Lladro porcelain plus several other things. I watched for my things to be listed on the auction and never saw a thing of mine. I called the company and they put me over to the lady that picked them up and she said that it was sold at inside auction and just didn't do well. And she would send my Lladro back because they didn't think i would be happy with what it would sell for.???????? And my oil painting they were still checking out(2 months) ????????? and my jewelry $20 ???????? how the jewelry she didn't take I sold for $65 at a yard sale???Somethings not right their( Would like to know how much made it to the auction.) And the same thing for the rest. She did send back the Lladro thank God.She had said she would send some of the money back also because it was not on the web, never happen. I just read the review the lady wrote and couldn't believe what she said. I've dealt with Burchard Galleries several times, always going into any arrangement with them with my eyes wide open....I was always given the advice that I may not get the amount I'm thinking of at auction, especially with 'no reserve'. So, I made agreements with them based on that....I was never lied to by the gal who represented them. The folks at Burchard Galleries are very honest so I would advise anyone reading the extremely negative report on them to use their own judgement. I think the auction house is 'top-notch'...first class all the way. My experience has been nothing but good. read more
