Updating my update. My previous two reviews of BVC were very positive, but today was not so great. While I continue to think Dr. Alt is fantastic, my dogs won't be seeing another vet there. First off, I'm as COVID conscious as anyone else in NoVa, but why can't I come in with my dogs for their exam? Two years into the pandemic, and we still have to sit in the car while they take my dogs inside. We are triple vaxed and I will wear 8 masks and SCBA gear if they ask me to, but nope, have to sit in the car. My dogs are my kids and I'd really like to be there for their medical exam. As a result of having to go through the front desk for everything, there was a miscommunication and they neglected to draw blood for a heart worm test that I requested (for boarding) and had to come back out to the car to get my dog again to do the test. The most egregious was that the vet tried to tell me (over the phone of course) that my clearly intact male dog is neutered! How much of an (85$) exam did she do if she didn't know that my dog has testicles? Also please don't judge me for keeping my dog intact when there are lots of studies that suggest it's better for the dog. Dr. Alt is great, but I do question the level of care some BVC patients are getting right now. read more

Find another vet. I don't know what has changed with BVC but something definitely has and not for the better. They said 3 weeks ago that my dog had Coccidia. Since then he has been on 3 different meds and we also had to put our other dog on preventive meds. This is all understandable. However, I called on Saturday to say he was no better, even worse,, Dr. Kirkomo called back and said "I can try to call in a stronger compound, but I'm not sure if the pharmacy can fill it, I will call you right back" . She didn't call me back & there is no way to get in touch with ANYONE from BVC after they close. The 2 emergency vets they have listed couldn't see us, and I spent all of Sunday trying to find one that would. BVC answering machine says "we are in a staff meeting, if this is an emergency come here as there is a doctor on premises" ,, I went there Sunday, and there was no one there. I left and note and went home to call more places and care for my poor dog. Monday morning Roberta called and apologized, made a bunch of excuses,, and said the prescription had been called in on Saturday (which would have been nice to know 48 hours earlier), she asked what they could do,, I asked them to run another stool sample so that we could see if he still was testing positive for coccidia, therefore, justifying the stronger medication, but if it was negative, then we would have to look for a different cause. I would've thought that after they dropped the ball so badly, that they would offer to pay for the stool sample and offer to exam him to see how the dog they neglected was doing, however, since it's all about the bottom line dollar for them they did nothing & even suggested I find a different vet. very upsetting experience. not sure who owns this business but they should really know that the people who are representing them have the worst customer service. the chief medical officer called me back a little later that day and basically just sat on the end of the phone saying "uh huh, yep, ok, uh-huh" and again did nothing to help ,,,bottom line it was unfortunate, unprofessional , neglectful and cruel. As a first time dog mom I can probably over react and probably did yesterday. I called Burke Veterinary Clinic and they were able to get me in the same day. Once checked the vet who told me he had a UTI. Julia Carter prescribed some medicine for Max, shared the treatment plan and follow up and made sure I understood. Today, just over 24 hours SHE CALLED ME TO CHECK UP ON ME AND MAX!! ME and Max! Does your vet do that? My last vet did not. I feel compelled to tell all dog/cat owners how AMAZING this vet is and that I highly recommend them. Julia also saw my 2 cats and administered rabies shots in such a way that they didn't even fuss. For almost 12 years, Dr. Alt showed the utmost compassion when taking care of our dog Cammie. She didn't have many health issues, but when she did, Dr. Alt and his staff were very professional, but also made every effort to make us feel welcome and comfortable. In his signature calm demeanor, Dr. Alt would clearly lay out the options and make a recommendation, always leaving the final decision to us. Fortunately, his options were always reasonable, and he never tried to sell us on something we didn't need. Last week, Cammie's kidney disease and dementia became too much for her to bear, and we had to make the most difficult decision to end her suffering. When we arrived, we were led to a room, where Dr. Alt greeted us by telling us how sorry he was for us, and reaffirming that we were making the correct decision. In similar situations with other veterinarians, they would insist on doing a checkup first, or even refuse service until one was completed. This always sat wrong with me as a cash grab from a doctor who diagnosed an issue, only to be surprised when it actually came true. A sat reality of being a pet owner is that compassion can offer be measured by the price paid. Not so with Dr. Alt. He reassured us through the entire process, and as we said goodbye to our little girl, he calmly walked us through every step. We were surprised to receive a hand written letter from Dr. Alt a few days later, expressing his sympathy for our loss. His compassion is effortless because he is truly that person. He was the only person we ever trusted with our dog, and for everything he did for her, we can't thank him enough. read more

The best of the BEST! Late last year I adopted Sadie, a 14 year old senior cat looking for her forever home! Last month, after a UTI and other health issues led to something more serious including multiple seizures that resulted in a completely lifeless kitty, I thought we had certainly reached the end. I emailed Burke Vet Clinic early in the morning and they called me right away and indicated that some of Sadie's symptoms may be treatable and I should think about bringing her in for professional treatment instead of waiting for her to naturally pass. Dr. Patty Carcamo said if I decided to bring her in that her team would be ready. Sadie had another seizure on my way in, I called the office as soon as I arrived and the young gal who answered the phone came running out. She secured Sadie and took off running back in, I could see her through the store front windows moving as fast as should could taking her directly into the examine room without breaking stride. I think it's assumed that our vet's care about our pets, but I think it speaks volumes to see their support staff care so much even when they don't know you are watching. Dr. Patty Carcamo will call you with your treatment options and she will wait as long as it takes you to make a decision without rushing you. Any time lost in your decision making, she will make up for because she moves fast! I could tell she was directing her staff at the exact same time she was confirming our agreed upon path forward. Due to Dr. Alt's well respected professional status in our community, if you go to Springfield Vet Emergency Referral, they will stabilize your pet and conduct exams but they will refer you back to Dr. Alt's practice for an actual diagnosis. In my recent visit, they were heavily inclined to yield to him and that should speak volumes to his reputation and how he is viewed by his colleagues in the field. (Note that for almost two decades the fantastic and ever constant Dr. Alt has cared for my entire family's cats, including my parent's cat Daisey who is nearly 17!!!!) Happy news! Thanks to Dr. Alt, Dr. Carcamo, Brandon the ever positive and friendly vet tech and the entire Burke Vet team, Sadie weathered the storm, is back to her normal self and has already regained weight and energy giving me what appears to be a few extra months with her. I took my black lab, Bella in for a check up at the beginning of this month. We're admittedly on a very tight budget but we'll do whatever we can for our dogs, whenever we can. Bella wasn't eating for awhile and whatever she did eat she'd puke up. But me and my aunt were stumped so we finally decided to take her to the vet. The first check up was pretty expensive but we expected that and were at least prepared. However we couldn't afford the x-ray tests and the doctor that saw Bella told my brother that it was okay and then ran all the other tests and determined that it was a uterus infection and Bella needed to be fixed. So we'd plan for that at the middle or end of the month once we'd all have the money together and then we'd be aces for what I was told via my brother who took her, would be around $600-$700ish. They gave us antibiotics to tied Bella over till then, they only lasted 5 or so days and sent us on our way. After 2 weeks, Bella wasn't getting any better and now she was no longer eating anything period. She'd drink water but it'd end up right on the floor again so clearly the antibiotics didn't help and whatever she had was getting worse by the day. Fast forward to today, a day before my family and I were going to get paid so we could at least afford a spayed, my mother wants to do one more check up. But include the x-ray this time. Come to find out one of Bella's tubes was blocked and the way they phrased it "If we don't fix it, Bella will die". From the way my brother quoted the doctor that took 'care' of her. My anger towards the doctor about saying we didn't "need" to do the x-rays the first check up aside, the doctor then said they had to do an emergency, overnight spayed for Bella which. Okay. Fine. How much? 3k. With no payment plans as an option. So basically the Vet as far as I'm concerned would've either sentenced my dog to an early death bed or would've put us in debt for the next several months, maybe even years. To bring up the previous statement I made, the fact that they said it was fine that she didn't need an X-Ray and proceeded to diagnose her with something they didn't even know for sure, send us home with medication that didn't even last a full week, and then have the audacity to ask for $3,000+ to save our dog was one of the most disgusting and aggravating experiences I've ever had in my life and I happily am going to take my business elsewhere. Not only are they overcharging nearly everything they do, they are putting your dogs lives in danger. If I can find the vet that saw my dog, I will happily include that information at a later date because they are forever on my crap list. Don't come to this vet. There are many more options in the area, out of the way or otherwise, that'll take better care of you, your dog, and your wallet. read more

I write this having had my dog Ewok pass away earlier this morning. He lived and was loved 16 long years with us. I believe Burke Veterinary Clinic had a big part in helping with this since switching to their care in 2010. Besides his annual check-ups and scheduled vaccinations, Ewok also went through a few surgeries that prolonged his life. We've always requested Dr. Alt but have also seen the other vets a couple times when Dr. Alt wasn't especially needed for the particular appointment. Ewok seemed more calm and willing to be treated under his care. The rest of the staff was also great, including Hilary and Brian, who always knew who Ewok was and had a story to share about him anytime they would call to give me updates on his condition whenever he was under their supervision. More often times than not they would be able to squeeze in an appointment if I had an urgent concern on his well-being which was difficult since they are pretty busy and rarely slow down. I want to thank BVC for helping give Ewok a long healthy life that gave our family lotsa moments of joy throughout the years. Everything in response to my comment is false or misleading: 1. I did not say it was the vet's fault I was late. That would be ridiculous. I distinctly said I missed my exit and had to get turned around, which was why I was late and apologized. Side note: didn't realize my appointment was only 20 minutes. Had the person told me when scheduling, I would have asked whether that was enough time for blood work, multiple vaccines, and a physical for a dog with multiple chronic health issues. But hey, this just helps prove my point of an overbooked schedule. 2. No one offered for me to stay for the next appointment (which I asked if I could and would have accepted) only that I would have to reschedule because they were completely full. They also had taken the next appointment in before my appointment slot was even over. So there must be some overlap in your appointments (more hints of an overbooked schedule) 3. I didn't come in the wrong day for a previous appointment, the office assistant scheduled it for the wrong day and/or told me the wrong day that she had put me in the calendar. 4. When my dog developed kennel cough after seeing the groomer, she developed kennel cough literally the day after she went to the groomer. Do the symptoms​ of kennel cough appear within 12 hours of exposure? Or is it more likely they develop within 3 days of going to the vet? I'm honestly surprised to even get a response to my review. Normally a business would just say something about we apologise if there was any inconvenience and we strive to do the best we can, blah blah blah. I know you're not required to be HIPAA compliant or anything, but Dr. Alt, taking a defensive posture by discussing a client's history in an online forum just seems....unethical? Take this however you want. But with the response from Burke to my review, I have no doubt that I made the right decision to find another veterinary clinic. So for that, thank you. They have made repeated mistakes scheduling appointments and clearly overbook their schedules. If you show up for an appointment on time, you wait 20-30 minutes to be seen, but when you're 10 minutes late, they make you reschedule. They scheduled my appointment for the wrong day to get my dog's kennel cough vaccine. When I showed up they wouldn't see me and made me come back a week later. When we came back, the waiting room (which is very small) was full of dogs (obviously because they overbooked) and my dog ended up getting kennel cough!! Nothing wrong with the vets, but getting to actually see the vet is necessary for me to take into account their quality. They didn't used to have these problems. Been going there 10 years, so they must have had a change in office manager. Bottom line, if you want to go to a veterinary clinic that values your pet's well being and your time over profits by trying to pack in as many appointments as possible, Burke Veterinary clinic is not for you. read more

We even got a call from one of the vets the next day to check on our fur baby, which was a first for us. They even took the time to send out a sweet "welcome" card addressed to our cat! I was with Burke Veterinary Clinic for 18+ years. I adored Dr. Alt. Then Something went wrong--not sure what. He sold the practice; was never available; wasn't the caring Dr. Alt my dogs and I had known to love. Recently we had issues with our last dog, Charlie. I phoned sobbing that Charlie was not doing good, I wanted to bring him in and I think it was time to put him down. I was told by Esther that "the doctor didn't have any time for Charlie plus they were getting new computers tonight so if you want to put your dog down you need to go to Regional Vet Referral Center to have this done" Really? I was more upset at the lack of passion this office had for my dying dog. This is the only place Charlie knew--I didn't want him to go to some strange place, his last place. I did, everything worked out and was treated lovely and we peacefully said good bye to my sweet Charlie. But the evening and following days were horrible at the though of lack of passion the vets took. And Esther - I was in disbelief, in tears sobbing, I just couldn't believe. Shame on you Dr. Alt and Burke Veterinary Clinic, Shame on You!! I will never, ever go back to Burke Vet again. I will not refer people there. I will be taking my cats elsewhere, Very disappointed to say the least. read more

I can't say enough good things about Dr. Alt and the staff. My cat has been suffering from chronic diarrhea and we have not had any luck with other vets. I've moved further away from Burke so I have been going to vets closer to home to alleviate the traumatizing car ride for my furbaby (otherwise I'd continue coming here in a heartbeat). Even though the trip is a little bit more intense for my cat, it's so worth it knowing that she is in good hands. Dr. Alt walked us through several treatment options thoroughly. We did not feel pressured at all to spend a large amount of money on different tests. Many vets would up-sell you to test for x,y,z -- and even then you might not find the root of the problem. We are undergoing a medication treatment right now and hopefully that will help. Dr. Alt even called me personally to see how the treatment was going a few days into it. When does a busy doctor such as himself even have the time/energy to remember about my specific cat and her health problems, let alone call me to ask how she's doing on the medications?? I don't know of any other vets that would go out of their way to check up on my pets like this!!! For my other cat, she had her routine checkup and she was so scared she pooped in her carrier. I embarrassingly pointed it out to the staff when I got there. They reassured me that it's no problem and that they'd clean her and the carrier up. They are so sweet and understanding! Now, my cat is a real meanie and she has never let me groom her without drawing blood. Dr. Alt truly has the magic touch and was able to comb through her mats while she just laid there behaving like an angel. This is still the best vet clinic I've ever come across. We all know the type: spends outrageous amounts of money on holistic dog food, obsessed with her pets, spoils them more than most people spoil their actual progeny, perhaps she even refers to them, upon occasion, as her "fur children" -- you know, the crazy dog lady type. And we all know that I am totally, thoroughly, 100% one of those types. So sue me, I love my dogs! Harry and Daxter are the miniature schnauzer counterpoints to my very soul, and I tell them so (maybe not in as many words) every day. And so for the longest time, I thought that the ridiculous bills I was racking up from my previous vet's office meant that I was paying for the best of care for them. Until, of course, I stopped thinking that. And instead started thinking about how maybe it doesn't have to be that expensive. I mean, c'mon. When the pet insurance wellness plan that I get for them (which, to be fair, is something that ALL pet owners really should consider getting, not just us crazy ones) doesn't even cover the entirety of their standard, annual checkups, something's gotta be amiss, right? Enter my search for a new vet to take care of my precious pups, and enter the Burke Veterinary Clinic. I seriously feel like I've won the jackpot. Never before in my life as an obsessive, neurotic dog owner have I ever felt more at ease at the vet's office. From Shelley, who booked my next-day appointment and checked me in (and who proactively informed me of a $10 off new client form they have on their website!), to Dr. Alt himself, officially the Greatest Vet in the World (TM), I had a 5-star experience the entire way around. First up, let's talk about Dr. Alt's bedside manner. What a nice guy! He seems like he's still relatively young, so maybe he's just not as jaded from dealing with both negligent pet owners and people like me for so long. Regardless, he seemed to genuinely enjoy meeting my boys, handling them with so much care it made my heart swell. He let them sniff and inspect every instrument he used on them, from the ear speculum thing to the eye flashlight thing (I'm pretty sure these are the technical terms), and even my constantly frightened, crybaby Daxter didn't make a peep when he got his booster shot. Dr. Alt was equally nice and caring when dealing with me. Never once did he try to upsell me on a shot, procedure, medicine, or the like. In fact, unlike the majority of my past vet experiences, he proactively informed me of whether certain shots and procedures were even necessary (they are SO honest about what is and isn't!), and let me make the decision on whether I wanted to move forward! He really seemed to understand that, while obviously I'd pay thousands of dollars for my pets' health if the situation demanded it (and it has, and I have!), I prefer not to have to break the bank on a routine basis. Dr. Alt didn't even bat an eye that the flea/heartworm preventative that I was asking about wasn't one that they had in stock. He simply said I could order it online -- something that A) I probably would have done anyway, but B) no vet has EVER suggested, since normally they'd "recommend" me switching to something they DO carry so that I could buy it right then and there. It was just so... refreshing. Honestly, it caught me a little off guard! And when it came time to pay the bill, even for two dogs it seemed really reasonable (especially for this area, and especially in comparison to the exorbitant amounts that I've paid in the past). PLUS, they even filed my pet insurance claims FOR me! I honestly cannot stress enough how great my first experience at Burke Veterinary Clinic was. Harry, Daxter, and I all feel thoroughly taken care of, and while I obviously don't hope to have to go back to the vet on more than an annual basis, I know that the next time I walk through those doors I will have nothing to dread. read more

He helped us keep both of our dogs healthy when we moved to the area in 2010, and was even willing to offer advice and a second opinion over the phone when we did a 2 year tour overseas. Thrilled. I got my dog about a year ago, and called around to several vets to price places out and see who I felt the best with. The boyf has been taking his (our) dog to Dr. Wilson at Burke Veterinary Clinic for a couple years now, so I decided to give them a try. First. Their prices are a good $30-50 lower per visit than anywhere else I priced out... fantastic. When I went (the very day I got my dachshund puppy) I saw Dr. Alt. He's amazing. So gentle and caring and he really took the time to explain EVERYTHING to me - as a new dog owner, I really appreciated how thorough he was. My dog had a parasite (ew) so they were so helpful in explaining what he had and how to take care of it, they prescribed me his medicine, and it worked just fine! I've seen Dr. Alt every time I've taken Finn in, except for once. The other time, Finn needed a last-minute check up and I saw Dr. Wilson - also wonderful and so helpful. Every time I have a question (from "Oh My GOD he's sniffling" to "I want to make him a birthday cake, what can I put in it!?") I can call, Dr. Alt will call me back within that business day and talk to me - a godsend for a new mother ;). When Finn was neutered (poor fella) Dr. Alt called 2-3 times after I picked Finn up to see how he was doing. The front desk staff is always great, they remember Finn by name and LOVE to play with him every time he comes in. I would recommend Burke Vet Clinic with everything in me to anyone who can hear me yelping! They are incredible, and I'll never go elsewhere! read more

Dr. Alt and the whole staff here are great! Dr. Alt was able to properly diagnose my German Shepherd and prescribe the best medicine. I know this because my new vet here in Chicago confirmed it. Dr. Alt always listed to what I had to say and was always patient with me. He made sure to be available by phone whenever we needed him. I never had to reach him after hours for emergencies or anything but it was nice to know that he was a phone call away. My dog and cat loved it here and we did too. This clinic has been my go to for pet care for 7 years now. I've only seen Dr. Alt thus far and I've been very happy. He is patient, caring, and friendly - with my animal and with me! Your pets deserve personal service and compassion as much as you do! I hate to begin a review with such a cheesy slogan, but I wanted to catch your attention in case the five stars aren't enough. We've tried a few veterinary clinics in the area, and as far as I'm concerned we've found THE veterinary office for Lu, my handsome, senior bich-poo. Fifteen and not-as-strong, he needs the tender loving care more than ever now, and while I love him so dearly and spend hundreds and even thousands on him like it's nothing, it's good to know my money is well-spent. From my multiple visits to the office, I can honestly say that not one single aspect of these experiences has been unsatisfactory. Exemplary service starts when you call to make an appointment and continues way after your friend's visit is over. The front-desk staff are patient and personable. They are detailed whether scheduling appointments or providing discharge instructions. Burke Veterinary clinic staff are wonderful about following up. From rescheduling appointments to seeing how Lu is responding to treatment, they call promptly and are always a pleasure to deal with. Over the course of the year, Lu has seen three vets, but most often, he sees Dr. Wilson. She's amazing! Lu seems to know exactly what's going to happen once he walks into the vet's office, but Dr. Wilson always knows how to put him at ease, stooping down to pet him/play with him so he feels more comfortable. She is very gentle and reassuring throughout the exams. What I also love about her is that she really takes the time to understand him-his environment, his temperament, his health concerns, etc. She doesn't just take one look at him and hone in on the symptom that would require the most expensive treatments. She also provided me with a few treatment/exam options so that I could do as my budget and time allowed instead of mandating only one treatment plan. As I mentioned earlier, pet medical expenses can be quite damaging to the wallet, and you have no way to avoid it unless you can ignore your friend's discomfort. However, this veterinary clinic is pretty affordable compared to other veterinary offices in the area, and they don't push for lab tests unless they feel it's really necessary. For many years, I unwisely went to a vet whose staff would always try to get a urine sample or bloodwork done to fatten their own wallets. No more of that! For respectful and caring medical service for your beloved companion at an affordable price, in a relaxing and clean environment, look no further than Burke Veterinary Clinic. This probably seems like a paid ad. However, let me assure you, not only am I not getting paid to say all this, I'm paying to take my dog here and happy enough at the end of the day to write a stellar review. took my dog in who was pooping a little blood and had consistent diarrhea. the doctor didnt even touch my dog because she said he was aggressive. he doesnt know you! you put your patients in a room the size of a small bathroom and just barge in. what do you expect! of course he will growl initially he wants to protect me. even after he warmed up to the vet she still didnt feel comfortable to give him a physical exam but had the BALLS to charge me $85 for a comprehensive physical examination. are you kidding??? go anywhere else for your pet, these people still make you wait outside to come in for your appointment and force a mask on your face. whoever runs the practice needs to be in touch with reality and hire vets that aren't afraid of dogs. read more

I've been taking my dog to this practice ever since she was a puppy and I love both Dr. Alt and Dr. Wilson. They are both so knowledgable and caring. I love how they always follow up after a visit to see how my dog is doing and to make sure she didn't have any allergic reactions to any of the meds or vaccines. Really like all of the staff too. The front desk is friendly and well organized. It's easy to schedule appointments, and I never feel like I have to wait that long or that the waiting room is too crowded. read more

I found BVC thorugh a recommedation from a friend after it became apparent we needed to find a new one. (See my other reviews if you're looking for a vet to stay away from!) We've taken our dog to Dr. Alt quite a few times now for his annual check-up and occasional stomach problem. Dr. Alt has a wonderful bedside (dog bedside?) manner, and he calls his patients "friend," which I find endearing. I even got a follow-up call when I called once about some occasional vomiting (my dog's, not mine). I thought that was nice. The surprise at check-out was that it's much more afforable than our last place! It turns out our dog used to get all sorts of shots and vaccines that he didn't need... Or didn't need as often as he was getting. LOVE their honesty! I didn't give the full five stars because I always get a gentle lecture about how fat my dog is. Which, maybe he is--but can't we just call him husky or big boned? Seriously, they're good. Go here for sure. read more

I started bringing my dogs to BVC in 1997, and have never had a bad experience. Full disclosure, my sister worked there for a while, but I continued to have my dogs treated there long after she moved on to other work. They are fabulous about fitting in emergency visits, and straightforward about what procedures are necessary vs. recommended. The staff is always very friendly, and I knew that on the occasions I had to leave one of my dogs overnight they would get lots of love. I don't know Dr. Wilson as well but Dr. Alt is a great vet. On a sadder note both of my dogs have since had to be put to sleep, but the amount of care and compassion I received from the employees at the clinic still makes me tear up in gratitude. They made a difficult process a little bit easier, and I think that says a lot about how much they care. read more

Great location, great service, great staff. They were incredibly nice when making the first appointment over the phone and continued to be when I went to the clinic. Their vets were great, just like the rest of the staff. Something I appreciated was the follow up phone calls, that continued until I called them back and let them know how my pet was doing. :) read more

This is our vet! It is so easy to schedule prompt appointments for routine or acute care. They treat all three of our pups with love and respect and are skillful and conservative in their treatment protocols. The send out reminders for vaccinations and I really love that they make follow-up calls 24 hours after any treatment just to check on how the pet is doing. The go the extra mile to really make my pups feel comfortable, safe and happy. I highly recommend them! read more
