Coach Dong is a great teacher, professional, patient, and full of insights. He knows how to teach, not only the martial arts, but also the mentality. My son is five year old and he has been here for 2 month. My son is very energetic all the time. He is an independent thinker, so sometimes (actually most of the times) he does not listen to me or his mother. After about one month/eight classes, he improved so much in listening! And discipline, too! My son does not speak English because we recently came to usa. And this is not an obstacle at all, just like Coach Dong (as native English speaker) said when I signed up this classes for my son. As a matter of fact, my son learned more English here from Dong than anywhere else! Coach Dong is an amazing coach, and I will continue the classes for my son as long as possible! And my son loves this practice very much!

Korean Martial Arts, I have to say Kuk Sool Won is a pretty well rounded style of martial arts. From flexibility training to learning how to fall properly, kicking, punching, throwing, and self-defense. Most of the self-defense techniques involves escape against clothing grabs, head lock escapes, knife defense, finger breaks, neck breaks, as well as getting out of and up from a ground situation. Like most Korean arts, board breaking is always fun. ("Boards don't hit back" but hey, so does the boxing bag...) There is also an *optional* annual competition that one can enter, it is VERY friendly but still competitive. It is a good chance to make new friends and mangle with those that train in the same system. If you are looking for a fight, then this competition is not for you. Everyone brings a smile. The head instructor of this location, Dong, is a pretty well known international champion in the Kuk Sool community. He gives a good workout, very experienced in handling students of all backgrounds. Some people go to him to lose weight, some for conditioning training, some for self-defense. You really need a well rounded instructor to lead a good class. Dong is my choice for the job. Try it out~

I've been a student of Kuk Sool Won Millbrae since day 1. What started as nothing more than me trying to find a new workout that was different from my daily gym time became much more then I could have ever imagine. It became something I am passionate about. The martial arts studio is called a Dojang. It has ample floor space, a climbing rope, inclined monkey bars, a heavy punching bag, and boxes to climb and do parkour activities. They have padded mats to practice acrobatics. I myself have learned to do a front handspring! There is a whole lot of room to practice, to become stronger and more agile. It's definitely not your average Martial Arts Studio. SBN Dong, instructor and owner, has definitely been a great inspiration and motivation in my life. His uplifting spirit, enthusiasm and electrifying personality has a way of making the whole room light up. The kids love him! Some of the little ones (ages 3-6) sometimes have a more difficult time leaving their parents side and taking their first steps into the Dojang. Even sometimes their own parents can't get them to budge. With just a few words from SBN Dong they're off running onto the floor and ready to join the other kids! He's like the kid whisperer! Don't be surprise if you find your child not wanting to leave! SBN Dong diversifies his lessons so that they apply both to Kuk Sool and to our everyday lives. He wants to see his students grow both inside and out of the Dojang. I've seen him on many occasion talking to his students about what their aspirations in life are, including myself. He was the reason why I wrote a personal statement and it was more emotional for me then I thought it would be. He always encourages us to reach down deeper and find a better understanding of ourselves. One of the most important things SBN teaches his students is to never say, "Can't." "Can't" shouldn't exist in our vocabulary. Instead of can't, he wants us to ask ourselves "How do I get there?" "What steps are necessary to achieve the goal at hand?" If you don't know where to begin, he's always there to help guide us in the right direction. The initial push some of us need. Never does a day go by that he doesn't challenge his students to be better. That no matter how good they think they are at something there is always room for improvement! Being a student since the school has open, I have had the pleasure of seeing how much the school and its students have grown. The amount of students has greatly increased. The adults pushing themselves to the limit everyday to reach the goals they have set for themselves. The younger kids are more eager to learn and take on leadership roles. Parents on many occasions have talked about how disciplined, attentive, respectful and confident their child has become since starting. Our first tournament was definitely a great highlight for our school. Bringing about 25 students, we placed top 4 in California when we were just hoping for top 10. 3rd to 1st place brought 80-100 students. Showing us that the quality of our teaching was greater then we know. Another great thing about KSWMillbrae is that everyone tied to the school is Family. The constant support and encouragement that I have received has kept me motivated and gives me the drive to work hard, whether it be in my training or my daily life outside. It has definitely become my home away from home. So if you're looking to improve yourself mentally and physically or just self, look no further! You might get more than what you were expecting!

I came in as a brown belt specifically to train under Coach J Janero. His lineage through Rickson Gracie and the Ribeiro brothers resonated deeply with me since I started my journey under Kron Gracie. Making a move at that level is not easy. You do not change academies unless you are looking for something real. What I found at Evolve was next level coaching. Coach J genuinely cares about his students. He does not run a one size fits all system. He studies you. He understands how you move, where your gaps are, and how to refine your game. That level of individualized attention is rare. You feel seen, not processed. Training with J and Jane, who is also an incredible black belt and coach, has completely transformed my Jiu Jitsu. Their focus on efficiency, precision, and longevity is huge for me. I am in my 40s and I want to train into my 50s and 60s. They teach you how to push hard while staying smart. The culture is serious, technical, and supportive. If you care about growth and long term development, this is the place.

I've been going to this boxing gym for about 5 months now and consider this my home boxing gym…read more I've been to other "fitbox" gyms that come nowhere close to the quality of instruction you get from the experienced trainers at B Street Boxing. The gym atmosphere is welcoming to all attendees and there is a strong sense of community among the regulars. As for the gym itself, there are lots of heavy bags spaced throughout the gym and two boxing rings against the far wall. This is a place where you will learn real boxing! Most of the gym goers here are men (there are separate kids' classes too) and as a woman, that has never bothered me. Everyone is respectful, helpful, and very kind. People practice good sportsmanship and aren't looking to "prove" anything. There are several instructors and I've enjoyed classes with every one I've tried so far (Eddie, Val, Ritesh). Each instructor has a different teaching style and area of expertise, so you can learn something from everyone. Boxing classes are mostly bag work, with occasional partner work. Every so often there is also no contact/light contact sparring in the ring. It may seem intimidating at first, but everyone here prioritizes safety, and it's nice to put the skills you've practiced to the test. Overall you get a great mix of different aspects of boxing to work on--punches, combos, defense, footwork, etc, all while building up stamina. Classes usually wrap up with core work or other exercises off the bag. You will work hard! Take water breaks if you need. The coaches here also do private training for competitive fighting, for those interested. For people looking to learn a new sport from instructors that have spent time in the ring, look no further. This is a safe and welcoming place to learn.

But for me, this is the gym to go to in the Bay Area. Why? In coming to a boxing gym, I wasn't just looking for a workout. Yes, I want to get in shape. But you can do that in any number of ways. I also wanted to learn how to box. How to throw a cross, a jab, how to slip, how to measure distance. In other gyms I went to, it's basically a Barry's bootcamp with a heavy bag. You do an exercise routine that also has some punching. And it's great exercise! But at B Street, you not only get a hard, hard workout, but also a lot of coaching. In my first week (which was free), they started by showing me all the basic moves. Where to put my hands, how to move my feet. When I got some gear, they showed me how to wrap my hands. And during class, they not only take you through a high intensity workout routine, but also step in to make sure you're moving your body correctly, keeping your guard up. You'll get time in the ring with the coaches to do pad work and feel what it's actually like to have to move around an opponent and measure out your distance (this is *very* different from bag work!). You can even spar if you want, but I haven't got to this point yet and will probably hold off until I get into better shape. The coaches are all awesome, definitely know what they're talking about, and are incredibly nice. They meet you where you are and work from there. They're not afraid to push you to your limits, but never in a way that's mean or disrespectful. The community is also an awesome surprise. Everyone I've met there has been really nice and willing to take a second to help out a beginner with some basic tips. No egos or anything, just good people trying to help each other out. If you get in at the right time, you can also see B Street's Amateur team at work! No shortage of talent at this gym. Plus, they only charge $125/month. The bang for the buck is definitely there. Tl;dr - If you're looking for a boxing gym that will actually teach you something, this is the place to go.

The coaches teach the details behind each technique instead of just showing moves, so you learn not only what to do, but why it works. That approach has made a huge difference in my own understanding of jiu-jitsu. The atmosphere is welcoming and respectful. Whether you're brand new or have years of experience, everyone is treated like they're part of the team. The advanced belts are approachable, the training is challenging without feeling intimidating, and there is a genuine culture of helping each other improve. One thing I really appreciate is that standards are high. Progress and promotions feel earned, which creates an environment where people are motivated to keep learning and getting better. At the end of the day, a great academy isn't just measured by how good the instructors are--it's measured by the kind of community they build. The instructors clearly know what they're doing, and the kids' program is well-structured and engaging. However, as a parent, the overall experience leaves a lot to be desired. The biggest issue? No WiFi for parents. If you're going to have parents sitting around for an hour or more during classes, it's pretty unreasonable not to provide even basic internet access. Not everyone can just disconnect from work or responsibilities during that time. The waiting area is minimal, and without WiFi, you're essentially stuck doing nothing or burning through your mobile data. In this day and age, that feels like a pretty basic amenity that should be standard--especially for a place that otherwise operates at a high level. So yes, great training--but not a very parent-friendly environment. Until they address this, it's hard to fully recommend.
