Flatbush Optical on Flatlands Ave and Dr. James Kim engage in severe deceptive business practices and predatory billing schemes designed to exploit consumers and drain insurance allowances. This doctor and Flatbush Optical are a stain on the community and they are predators. Do Not frequent this business. I visited this provider explicitly requesting union-covered frames and standard progressive lenses under my United Federation of Teachers (UFT) benefit package, which contractually guarantees a $0 out-of-pocket balance. Instead of honoring this clear instruction, they attempted to force an illegal balance-billing scheme upon me, hitting me with unauthorized upcharges and unrequested premium lens add-ons.When I demanded a clear, transparent, line-by-line itemized receipt to see why I was being charged, they flatly refused to provide financial transparency. They intentionally hid the billing breakdown from my sight to prevent an official paper trail of their predatory pricing structure. Worse yet, I later discovered they surreptitiously locked and exhausted both of my optical certificates, submitting a fraudulent $600 invoice to my insurance provider for products and premium modifications I never consented to or signed for!To add insult to injury, the owner actively withheld my legal prescription until I threatened to contact New York State regulatory boards. Even after taking half of an unauthorized payment from my debit card, they tried to claim it was an "innocent mistake"--only after being caught. Most maliciously, on August 31, 2026, to retaliate against me for filing a legitimate chargeback claim with my bank and reporting their misconduct to the UFT Welfare Fund and General Vision Services (GVS), the doctor went into the system and filed a claim that has now locked my benefits and made me completely ineligible for glasses for the entire year. Because of this systemic fraud and ongoing retaliation, I have filed formal complaints against them with multiple regulatory agencies, including the NYC Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (Case #020967-2026-CMPL), and escalated the matter to state licensing boards. GVS has already verified their overcharges and calculation errors on their end.Protect your insurance certificates and your wallet: stay away from Dr. James Kim and this corrupt storefront. (He literally told the lady "that's ok. We don't have time to finish that") and ushered me to the back for a "rushed" exam. I went there for a routine exam and updated lens prescription which he forgot to give me. I don't have any confidence that he did a thorough, quality, eye exam. My experience - Poor quality of care, lack of professionalism and integrity. Maybe he is knowledgeable, but unfortunately, I didn't get to experience it.

Went into Pride Optical after seeing interesting frames in their display and I'm glad I did. Patty…read morewas patient as I tried on a million different pairs. After choosing one, the turnaround to pick them up with my prescription was pretty fast. The frames ended up sitting too close to my face, so I returned to see if they could be adjusted. To my surprise, they were able to add a higher plastic nose pad to match my frames instead of those old school metal ones. I was also having problems adjusting to the lenses, but they kept on making adjustments until they were correct. They even let me see their optometrist for free to check that my prescription was accurate. I also discovered that the lenses on my old frames (from a different place) weren't entirely right, so Adam offered to replace those lenses for free so I wouldn't have trouble switching between my old and new frames. Even though it took a few visits to get everything right, I'm glad it did because I got to know Patty and Adam more and am blown away by the level of commitment, quality and customer service they have for their clients. They're just lovely people and I'm happy to have found my go-to glasses place. Thanks Adam & Patty!!
