I heard a lot of hype about a burrito place in the market and dropped by recently. It's very close to the corner of Clarence and Dalhousie. I walked into the building and they have stairs going up and down. If you go up there is a place to order food and drinks. If you go down there seems to be some seating. There is also a few seats on the main level but not many and there is also an ATM the main level. I always order the carne (beef) as my first burrito from any place and it was no different here. The people working seem extremely friendly and we chatted a bit. As they were preparing my burrito I realized that they were getting the meat from a metal tray in a buffet that was covered. If a burrito joint can't cook up a piece of steak as it really takes 5 minutes max at least keep the meat in a heated tray...to the proper temperatures. Not keeping food to proper temperatures always annoys me. The burrito was filled with everything, wrapped and tossed on a press to grill. I ordered the burrito to go as I was doing Xmas shopping and I opened it on the street. My first bite I noticed that the hottest item in the burrito was the rice. The rice wasn't really hot, rather somewhere a little above warm. The burrito itself was pretty bland and I was disappointed. The worst part was that I got ill...not violently but still. If you can spare a few minutes you should go to Ahora around the corner who offers a platter for the same price range as the burrito here. read more

For take-out, Burrito Borracho is just great by me -- but I wouldn't eat in again. My husband and I are both big Mexican fans, so we swing by B.B. for burritos often, and they're a good size and tasty! They allow for all the "extras" free of charge, including the guacamole, which is great, since I've seen the guac run up to $3 to add nearby. The burritos come in steak, chicken, pork and veggie. I've tried them all, but steak is probably my favorite because whatever it's marinated in is yummy. They also have three levels of heat on the salsa and extra hot sauces they'll add in themselves so it spreads around well. The burritos come in 10 or 12 inch sizes, with the larger being around $9, I believe. Not too bad considering my guacamole is free. However, as I said, I would not eat in there again. The take-out counter is upstairs on this split level restaurant, and the eat-in place is downstairs. It's dark and it was packed with flies when I was in there before. Also, the drink I got on the cocktail menu -- some mix of gin and mango puree -- was disgusting. Truly. I didn't drink it and ordered a Corona instead. If you're looking for a quick burrito, this place is better than the one in the Market, but it's not a dinner place. read more

I came here on a Monday night hoping this place would be as delicious as Burrito Gringo on Bronson (that I still have to review). This place is quite small, the upper level is where they make the burritos and the bottom level appears to be a bar. I just stayed upstairs. I ordered a chicken burrito with chips and guacamole. They have a smaller variety of vegetables than usual. In fact I think I only got lettuce on mine because they ran out of everything (this was at 8PM). They have medium, mild and hot sauces to choose from for your burrito, as well as sour cream, rice and beans. I really think thats it. So they lose points on the variety of toppings. In total my meal came to $14, this seemed kind of stiff, but it is the Byward Market. They gave me a very tiny portion of guacamole with my chips so that was disappointing. The bit of guacamole that I had was quite good however. The burrito was okay, I found it a little bit bland. I felt like they could have put some veggies on it and some more sauce. I'm not sure that I'd give this place another shot, there are far better burrito joints in Ottawa these days! read more

Last week there was a "groupon" type of deal for Burrito Borracho, which made me wonder (and worry) about the establishment's success. While they claim to be 100% Mexican, I am not sure that the food they offer can convince customers that this is true. However, this is not to say that they should be disregarded. The food reminds me of the very popular Chipotle chain in the U.S. (owned by McDonald's, but so much better than the burger joint). It is refreshing, quick and sold at a very reasonable price. You also never wait very long to get your food and even if you had to - it does not matter because the staff very friendly and the ambiance festive. This killer combination can make you feel like spending the evening there. The occasional Mariachi band or 2 for 1 deals on drinks are also a great addition. read more

Quick and delicious! Not quite as authentic as Ahora but was filling and fresh and I didn't have to wait long. If I still lived in the market it'd be a staple. I like the separation of take-out and restaurant areas as it's in a teeny building. read more

Not good. I've tried many a burrito and this one did not measure up in the slightest. When at the end of it, looking back the grill marks were the highlight then that burrito is in trouble. I got a beef burrito, their namesake dish. The meats (pork, chicken, beef) all looked the same which is code for identical shades of gray. The tough, small strips were connected together by strings of fat. If you got one, you got them all. The beef was not tasty and worked out my molars. The rest of it was just BLAND. Where were the veggies, guacamole, sour cream? They were there but I had no idea still. The place is a bit cramped with a line (really?) going up the stairs. I'll go elsewhere. read more

At first I was pleasantly surprised with the reviews, menu, and friendly staff here. My friend and I ordered chips and guac while waiting for our tacos; however, as soon as we took a couple bites of our first taco we felt we had to leave. Immediately we were struck with heartburn and horrible stomach pains. It was all we could do to get back to our hotel in time to use the washroom and relax! We went in for tequila, and stayed for the food. The tequila selection was great, and the staff was helpful in choosing even though she had clearly never been asked to do so before. I had the enchiladas, which comes with 3 so I had one of each variety: chicken, beef, and pork. The chicken wasn't great, which I kind of expected, and the beef was good but the pork was defo my favorite. I will likely be back for a take out burrito before I leave. read more

I went with a friend and we ordered the Vegetarian Burrito with a salad and Steak Torta with rice, they cut both meals in half so that we can try both items. The fillings were pretty plain (lettuce, tomatoes, sour cream, beans, rice). The salsa was a sad story, the medium was basically just tomatoes and the spicy was not even a little bit tingly to the tongue. The rice was the most disappointing part, it was plain and tasteless and I'm 95% sure it was parboiled rice... blehhh. The steak was covered when we put in the order, but when they lifted the lid, it revealed small chunks of dried meat - not tasty at all. On the positive side of things - I left here feeling good, as in, I had eaten a fairly fresh and healthy meal. Nothing was greasy. The portion size is fairly large. read more

After coming here a few times, I've come to really like this place. Trying a few things on the menu, I found the al pastor tacos a bit disappointing. The pork was a bit dry and the pineapple that comes on them is just one variably sized chunk meaning you only get one or two bites with pineapple. But the chicken tacos were fantastic.The sauces that come with the tacos were great as well. My margarita was good, but I'm not sure it was 10 dollars good. The place itself has sort of a rustic hole in the wall feel which is cool, but it's also quite small and fills up at busy hours. I tried this place with a friend the other day before a concert. I heard about it a while back and had been wanting to try it ever since. I really liked it I have to say, but I also have to say I'm very partial to Mexican food! I had a lime margarita that was very bright and tasty and not cheap on alcohol ratio either! Then I had the tortilla soup that was perfect with a very flavorful borth and crisp garnish. As a main course I tried the enchiladas. They were very well made, not soggy, the fillings were tasty (I ordered chicken, pork and beef if I remember) and the side of rice and beans were very well executed. To finish, I had the churros with chocolate sauce it was crispy and everything and I'd order it again for sure but I don't remember it to be outstandingly delicious. I'll definitely go back to that place, however, know ye that the dining room is smaller than my closet and the service although very nice and professional was a bit confused and slow at times (especially for the dessert and bill). read more

This was our first meal in Ottawa when we arrived here for a family vacation. Stopped here for lunch on a busy Saturday afternoon. My husband and I had enjoyed the classic margarita, homemade, no mix. Himalayan pink sea salt rim was a nice touch. My al pastor burrito had great flavor with tender pork and roasted pineapple. The different sauces provided to each table were fabulous, especially the cilantro lime crema. Good variety of heat depending on your palate. Other entrees enjoyed by my family were veggie tacos and carnitas. My only complaint? Guacamole had too much lime juice. Juan gave us great service, food arrived promptly. This is the best taco place I have found in Ottawa. The tacos are authentic Mexican and so are the sauces. The prices are very reasonable with $12 for 4 or $2.50 on Tuesdays. The burritos are also very excellent. There is a good selection of tequilas and the staff are very friendly and knowledgeable. The place is small but in the summer has a nice but again small patio. This little place has good quality mexican food and a very nice server! We had the quesadillas and the large burrito with two cokes! The food was very well seasoned and they did accommodate for my cilantro hatred ;) Mind you, we went on a Saturday night and the Mexican music was blaring from the speakers, so if you prefer to have dinner in a quieter environment, this might not be for you! Ceilings are somewhat low as well, but to us it made for a cozy experience. Would definitely go back to try other dishes and maybe some of the drinks - they looked delicious, but we weren't drinking that night. Terrible customer service. Initially we thought this would be a nice lunch place but the service ruined our visit. The server mistook our order -- we received chicken instead of pulled pork for the burrito bowl and when we pointed this out she was adamant that this was our mistake in ordering, despite another customer behind us verifying that we had indeed said pulled pork. Usually we don't mind mistakes as long as the restaurant apologizes or tries to make amends so it was really disappointing that there was no apology and not even an offer to change the meat (It would have just been a simple swap). When we tried to discuss this with the server she was extremely unprofessional, saying that she is 'just a server so don't be pissed off'. Furthermore, when we asked to speak with her manager/owner she said she did not know their name or contact information. Other staff were not very helpful either. What a shame, since the place initially seemed promising with a good location. The food was average-- okay, but not worth going out of the way for. read more

The burrito is good. What was completely unacceptable is the health standards that their employees promote. I noticed one of their employees use the same tongs for both the pork and chicken, and asked him multiple times that it is a health hazard and a violation, to which he replied by saying it's the only tongs they have. Not the most authentic burrito joint, but conveniently located in Byward market and open late--healthier fast food option after night out if you don't want to head to usual fast food joints or diners. Call me picky, but this place is really hit or miss for me. Over the past three years that I have lived close to the ByWard Market, I have visited this place maybe a couple of dozen times in total (all for takeout). The service provided has been excellent by a couple of the people behind the counter but there are some others in particular that are completely below par. They have raised the prices and for me, the service provided should also justify this - in my opinion it does not. Secondly, I always get the feeling that the portions that they measure out for you, in terms of rice, beans and the meat chosen (for the burrito) are not generous at all. If you are paying $12.43 including tax for a burrito, they better pack that burrito full and give you some friendly service! Not impressed. Customers need to demand better service and the service providers need to up the ante! read more

My friend and I were just looking for somewhere to grab a quick bite, yet still manage to grab a seat on the patio. We had come in here and had two options to sit downstairs and order or order to go... We had assumed we could sit on the patio shortly after ordering our food we were told and shown to the desalinated sign that "take out" orders are not permitted to sit on the patio. I have never heard of such ridiculous rule at a restaurant- let alone a sign also stating this. I find it insulting that they are happy for us to buy their food and give them money but we are not permitted to have a seat. For this purpose I already would not recommend the restaurant. And to top it all off the burritos are no where to exceptional tasting. I was very displeased by this experience. read more
