Don't buy anything from this place if you even have a slight thought that you may have to return the item. I personally just drive right on by this place , not because of the products offered, or the staff, it is because I w once purchase a pair of hoka expensive athletic shoes for my wife that were on a small discounted out of season sale. I live 70 miles away from the store. My wife determined that she would need a different size so we returned to try to exchange the unworn new shoes. This was during an extremeley cold and icy period of weather here in central Illinois. There were no other sizes of said shoes available so we just ask for a refund. Then we presented our receipt, only to be told that we were one day late for the refund of the sale merchandise shoes. 1 day! I expressed my displesure of the return declination and ws referred to a manager that gave me a scolding, but eventually accepted the new unworn sale shoes that did not fit as a return. I am appreciative of the acceptance of the return, but because of this getting dragged through the mud before acceptingthe return I have chosen to just stay out of this place and have not returned! Retail managers sometimes act like straw bosses when the owners give them a stripe on their arm and they think they are a general in the military. It is said that one bad experience in a retail establishment will take seven repeat returns with a good experience in order reestablish a trusted relationship with said business. When I moved to this area I visited every bike shop and questioned every cyclist I encountered looking for a place to get service. Bushwhacker has been awesome! I have not had one surprise concerning price or service. I have a 20 year old Litespeed and ,unlike a Galesburg shop, they knew it and admired it. I have been so comfortable that I bought a new MTB at Bushwhacker this spring. When I told them exactly what I wanted they called me when they had it available instead of trying to sell me something off the floor. They knew my old MTB so they walked me through the differences. Went in to purchase a bicycle. Rather than ask if I needed assistance, the employees avoided me and continued to welcome and assist other people coming in. After 12-15 minutes of no help and being followed around (they assumed we either could not afford a bike or that we were thieves) we left and continued to the Farmers Market. This was my second time being treated this way by this company. Never again. I paid $1,200 cash and purchased my bike elsewhere. Peoria deserves better businesses to serve out community. read more

The only employee that has ever helped me and was courteous was the lady with the short sandy-blonde hair. She is the only employee worth anything in that store. I don't know what this place looks like in spring or summer, but in December it is filled with clothing. They have a truly huge selection of coats, jackets, pants, fleeces, hats, gloves and baselayers. For the technical, outdoor stuff they carry North Face, Mountain Hardwear, Marmot and Patagonia. Their backpacking and serious camping gear section is small. They have a bunch of ski wear and skis and bikes too, but I wasn't looking at any of that stuff. read more

It's a beautiful well set out store; however, the sales staff are not the best at pointing you in the right direction for what you are looking for. The prices are quite a bit higher than other stores, and you're not necessarily getting better service. If you know exactly what you want, it might be a good place to go. read more

We were in search of three bicycles for the three members of our family. We needed a bike suitable for a new rider, and two for a couple who...are no longer as lithe and resilient as we were 20 years ago. Yeah, that's it. The last bike I had, I ended up selling, because it never did fit right and it hurt to ride. So fit was my most critical item. What I loved was that when I said that, our sales person said, "that's just as it should be." We ended up working with 3 different people...they aren't on commission...and never felt pressured or anything else. Got to try several different bikes, ended up with a trio that was well below our price point. And the bikes here are priced at MSRP, which is VERY different from another shop (well known, in Washington Illinois, but that's another review...). I was in the market to upgrade my bike, but wasn't sure about buying new (I'm a cheapskate and I own it). I was in Bushwhacker for something else and my wife pulled a salesperson over to talk to me. I'm glad she did. I got excellent advice and help from the sales staff. They showed me bikes in my price range with absolutely no pressure. I felt like the sales rep heard me and directed me toward bikes that fit my needs. I tried out several bikes. I must have spent 30 or so minutes and didn't feel rushed at all. No question was too stupid, no bike was "too cheap" for them to show me. I found everyone really helpful and well-informed. I'll be back for more gear. read more
