For me, it's nice to know Better Beef Company is a local Oregon Butcher and meat supplier that sources their product from local farmers and ranchers. The animals are humanely raised and grain finished. And beyond just beef, they offer pork, chicken, lamb, and wild-caught fish and everything is vacuum sealed. A few local (Albany, OR) dairy items are available too. I saw fresh milk in the refrigerator (pasteurized, but not homogenized) in both chocolate & strawberry. A 12oz mocha flavored "Cowpuccino" that blends milk with cocoa and a hint of coffee caught my eye and I might have to try that next time. If you're looking for pasture raised eggs, they have a dozen from Coos Bay for $6.99. I also saw fresh pet food in one of the refrigerated cases. They have a large selection of cuts (including American Wagyu) plus some I'd never heard of, along with other related products like all-purpose seasonings, meat rubs, BBQ sauces, beef tallow (for frying or roasting) and many tasty sounding flavors of beef jerky. Need a whole prime rib? They had a great selection to choose from the day I was there with no need to call or order ahead. If ordering online is your thing, you can do that but be aware that their website is a work in progress and is being updated and redesigned at this very moment. You can also order online for free local delivery! If you're interested in stocking up, Better Beef offers "Beef Shares." You can choose between quarter, half or whole shares of beef with a variety of cuts like ground, rib eye, T-bone, carne asada, tri-tip, etc, with enough to fill your freezer for a long while. It's better quality than in your local grocery store at significant savings too. Our first time in yesterday. Great experience! Was helped by Brennan, very knowledgeable and helpful. Bought two filet mignons ($41.95 per pound but we got 15% off), a 2.9 lb tri-tip roast ($16.95 per pound) and 2 1/2 lbs of pork baby back ribs ($10.95 per pound). A note about the ribs: Yes, Costco has excellent quality BB ribs too but what I liked at Better Beef is that I could buy one quality rack and not a 9 lb pack. Sometimes it's just me and the husband and we can barely eat one rack between us!!!! The store is bright and clean, if maybe a tad sparse. I'd like to see some artwork on the stark white walls (but that's just me). ADA accessible with a ramp out front and level entrance in the back with handicapped parking right outside the back door. No stairs or steps. In addition to the new Beaverton location, they also have shops in Salem, Corvallis and Albany. Considering the quality, I don't think their prices are that outrageous. Moreover, the cashier told us that if we wanted to eat outside on their picnic tables, everything would come in a bag to go, but if we wanted our food in a basket we had to eat inside. It was a nice night and I was interested in eating outside on their tables. Why can't I take my basket outside? Are they afraid I will run off with it? Yesterday I stopped in with my daughter and her best friend for Sunday lunch before a movie. We ordered three burger baskets and three milkshakes, and the bill was nearly $60, which is about what I'd expect these days. At that price, though, I also expect accuracy. Ordering wasn't complicated, yet we stood at the register for around 10 minutes while the cashier struggled to enter the order. The only customization on my burger was a double cheeseburger with two slices of American cheese on each patty (four slices total), bacon, and extra vegetables. I've had problems here before with them substituting cheddar instead of American cheese, and unfortunately it happened again. When my burger arrived, it had only one slice of cheese and the extra vegetables were missing. The bun was barely toasted and appeared to have been run through a conveyor toaster instead of being grilled on the flat top. The fries were ordinary frozen fries, and the tater tots weren't anything memorable either. To be fair, they have improved one thing over the years by switching to fresh beef, and that's a noticeable step up. The burger has the potential to be very good if the kitchen paid closer attention to the details. Since we were hungry and on our way to a movie, I didn't ask for the burger to be remade. I simply showed it to the employee at the counter and explained that it wasn't what I ordered. She asked if I wanted it remade, but because we were short on time I asked if they could instead provide a gift card for a future visit. After we finished eating, she told me she'd spoken with the manager, who was working the grill. Their solution was to offer me a $1 gift card. A one-dollar gesture on a nearly $60 order after serving the wrong burger doesn't communicate that customer satisfaction matters. Mistakes happen. What keeps customers coming back is how those mistakes are handled. I genuinely want to support local businesses, but after repeatedly receiving the wrong cheese on my burger and then being offered a $1 gift card to make it right, I left disappointed. I hope management focuses not only on food quality but also on order accuracy and customer service. I'm not suggesting that people shouldn't go to Mike's. This is an attempt to help them improve their business and the experience that I have next time. Thanks for listening.
