It has been eons since I last saw Oliver Winery... and, boy, has it grown up! Not only are the wines a thousand times better (not just mead any more!), the environs are gorgeous! Myself and a new found friend got to visit Butler Vineyards last Sunday, 06-16-2024. It was roughly 1 hour from Indianapolis where we are staying but it was not a bad commute in any way. After getting off into the back roads it was a beautiful scenic drive for another 15 minutes with lush and green foliage that canopies the road. The Vineyard itself is excluded and intimate. It is locally owned and this shows. Very, low-key, come as you are, environment. If you're making it an afternoon with friends and the kids, no problem. If you're having a intimate evening with your special person, wonderful. There is space and privacy to be found for all. We enjoyed our wine tasting and our walk around the lake. We wer also enthusiastic about the live music from 1400-1700, this will be taking place for the remained of the summer on most Sunday evenings! read more

I am absolutely thrilled with this experience. I had three flights ($8/ea.) and was able to try nearly the whole menu. The beer cheese we bought was spicier than expected but still really good. The regular goat cheese got the spot! I found some excellent options and left with a case I joint purchased with my friend. Can't wait to return. read more

Wow, they have some really good wine here! Although it wasn't as picturesque as the other winery in Bloomington, I think I liked the actual wine and tasting experience here even more. I've meant to stop at the downtown store to have a tasting, but circumstances led me to checkout the actual winery to the north east of Bloomington instead. First, the folks who were running the tasting room were very friendly and helpful. They even made some fresh treats to be paired with certain wine selections (I don't know if that happens all the time or simply because it was Valentine's Day.) And though the cost of the tasting wasn't waived with a wine purchase, it was only $5 for eight (8!) tastings. When I chose eight that weren't paired with any of the tasty treats, they went ahead and let me try three more! Wow! I really enjoyed their Chambourcin Rose (2018). I could see drinking this as is or paired with a meal. Nice aroma and balance. I also picked up a bottle of their Yellowwood White (semi-sweet) that would be good with chicken or fish, and a bottle of a Spiced Apple fruit wine that can be served warm or as a cocktail mixer with fruit juice. I liked nearly all of the wines I sampled, but did find the Vineyard Rose to be too sweet (the hostess called it a Kool-aid wine) and some of the specialty wines were very potent though pairing them with the sweets seemed to balance out their flavors. Wife and I LOVE Butler Winery!!! Their wines are amazing!!! When at the vineyards, we love the ambiance inside, and the outdoor patio area is fantastic!!! When at the Butler Winery in downtown Btown...Amy, who took care of us, is so knowledgeable and is a sweetheart! Their wide variety of food and snacks complement the wines, all at attractive prices. Can't get enough...we go there every chance we get, can't wait to go back! I'm glad the vineyard is in close proximity to Btown. We came to butler as our first stop for a girls day out. I enjoyed the views on the property and the amble space set up on the patio on lawn for socially distant tables. I have not visited pre-COVID but they did have fun wine related gifts/souvenirs set up outside which was nice too. We came around 11:30 am and were able to choose from a variety of seating options. They have a wine tasting that includes 6 wines for $6- you write your name and table number on your wine sheet & choose whichever wines you want. I think I would have wanted a little more advice/recommendations from the staff prior to choosing our wines. When asked, they did say the fruit wines were not very sweet which helped my sister avoid those choices which she originally had chose all of them. She did say black current was one people either love or hate- i was not a fan at all. For the samples though, I enjoyed the sample sizes- Norton was the worst wine we tried in the group. I ended up leaving with a bottle of vineyard rose, blackberry, and vineyard red. Typical of Indiana wines, the sweet wines were the best! This is one of my favorite wineries. We have been here a couple of times. To get here you drive up twisty windy roads just when you least expect it you'll see grape vines. Lots of grape vines. As you walk up you are welcomed by smiling faces. I really wish I could remember our lady's name today, she was amazing, very knowledgeable about the wines. She was great, super friendly and accommodating. She made is feel welcome and got our humor. The wine... I have so many favorites. I honestly can't say that I've ever had a bad wine here. This time we brought home The Variant, Chambourcin rosé, Vignoles, Traminette, Late Harvest Traminette, and Black Currant. So much yumminess! I can't wait to come back and try some more. read more

Left with three bottles - two of the Vineyard Rosé and one of the Peach. There's a discount for multiple bottle purchase. The individual working was informative and helpful. I love coming to Butler because 1) they have great wines and 2) I love talking with Jim and Suzy! Located about 8 miles from Oliver Winery, Butler is what a family-run winery should be. It's small. The people are wonderful, and the wine is outstanding. I've ordered many a bottle and enjoyed a sunny afternoon on the patio sitting a few feet from the grapes, listing to the birds and wishing everyday could be like this. As for the wines, my absolute favorite is the black currant. It's the just the right about of tartness that pairs wonderfully with a nice steak out on the grill. It's also great by itself, although some people may think it's a bit tart to drink alone. Those people would be wrong. Ask Suzy for her Meatball Chambourcin recipie. It uses store bought meatballs, lots of spices, prego heart smart tomato sauce, and a couple of cups of two of Butler's wines. I throw them in a crock pot and cook for a few hours before guests arrive for a party, and they're always a hit. read more

Butler winery is the calm cousin of Oliver. Although both are relatively close to each other we tend to go to Butler because it's a little less hectic and we actually prefer their wine. Unlike Oliver Butler is a bit of a drive into country and the curvy roads. But going their is like finding a great gem. The owners are always behind the bar for tastings and that just makes it that more special. Although I could tell you about my favorites do the tasting and enjoy their variety. They have a beautiful outdoor overlooking the vineyard. On the property is a lake with seating available. Plenty of room for kids to run while parents relax. After tasting stay inside long enough to shop in the gift shop, we have found some great gifts for friends and family. So if you need a day of relaxation that a short drive from Indy and go to Butler. read more

Though I didn't find any favorites during my visit, I'm giving them 4 stars for service. They were prepared for our large group and had tables in the back with all the bottles open to pour. There were no huge lines or congestion. Actually, we were done way ahead of schedule. Unfortunately, the day we visited was quite chilly, so we weren't able to enjoy the patio as planned. Jim & Susie Butler are warm and friendly people. Jim actually took some of us out into the vineyard (just a few feet away from the tasting room) to talk about the growing process, etc. They have a lovely gift shop with local cheeses, wine gifts, signs, etc. to take home. This should definitely be on your list for your next visit to Bloomington. read more

It was our first time so we didn't know what to expect. The winding wooded road opened up to a field of grapevines - several rows - and a small, quaint winery. Everyone inside was very pleasant and there were a lot of options to choose from. We decided to try the Yellow wood Red and it did not disappoint. Very smooth and not too sweet! There is a covered deck for patrons and you can bring your own food. The deck looks out over the vineyard. Its serenity at its best. There is no traffic/noise whatsoever. A good alternative to Oliver (you can't help but compare them) At Butler, you will get much more individual attention. Showed up at noon on a Sunday, and we had the place all to ourselves. They were preparing for a party later, so they asked us if we wanted to sample the party food and help them pair some wines. So, duh. We did, and it was amazing. The staff was friendly and nice, and by the time I left I felt like a Butler loyalist. A great place for a cheese plate and a long talk, but don't bother if the weather isn't nice: you'll never make it out there. read more

This was a nice little stop on our all day winery visits, not quite as big as Oliver Winery, but the knowledge of the staff and hospitality was just as good. You will need a GPS system to find this little hidden winery off the beaten path but will be tickled pink when you find it!!! Loved their free wine tasting but this place lacked something. It is bare essentials, wine only no food (do not good here hungry, you will only eat oyster crackers). Cute place, nice folks working there, and a perfect fall destination. Wine is ok, a couple are good but their reds - mee thinks not. We went through their entire menu and I bought a couple of bottles (loved the Terra wine). Beware, their ice wine is ridiculously sweet but will blame this one on Oliver's grapes!!! read more

We stopped by this little out-of-the-way winery on our way home! The outside was adorable and the recommendations the lady behind the counter were delightful! She was very helpful and highly pleasant to talk to. I ended up leaving with not one but two delicious wines! This is a really nice winery-- quiet setting with a nice deck overlooking the vineyard. The owner has an impressive chem/bio background which I find tends to correlate with very good wine making (it is a precise science, after all!). I like that most of the wines had full bodied flavor, not the artificial taste that seems to plague so many Indiana wines. I'm not usually a fan of the sweets, but that blackberry wine-- yowza. The tastings are a bargain so go nuts. read more

Another place that I was happy to visit, this winery has some charm to it. Out of the two locations in Bloomington, I would suggest coming to this one as it is out of the way so you can be more intimate with your tasting and friends. The tasting room/gift shop was very open and inviting as our little group descended upon the ladies running the counter. Offering 6 free samples from 18 wines, I liked 3 that I tried. Their reds were a disappointment to me. Too bad the flavor didn't match the atmosphere and scenery of this little vineyard. We read about an in-town tasting room they had but got sidetracked as we started following the road signs to the actual winery instead of following the printed instructions we had to the tasting room - which obviously did not have any signs. This is not a winery to visit if there is any sort of snow on the ground in Indiana - it up a very hilly, windy road. But the wine was really great! read more

This is a cute, off the main road winery. They have a tasting room with both bottles available for purchase along with gift items. There is an indoor seating area, an outdoor covered seating area, and you can also walk around the tiny vineyard. It is perfect for a quiet afternoon. They have some food items available for purchase but you might want to bring some of your own supplies. Groups are welcomed. Pair a visit with nearby Musgrave Orchard for an amazing fall afternoon! Room For Improvement: 1) Indoor Seating Area: The area is nice and an accommodate maybe 2 dozen people but the decor is a little taste-specific. If they would like to make it better for events or to broaden their demographic (beyond middle-aged women) then going with something a little less taste-specific might be a good move (read: less cutesy/country/fake ivy). 2) Smoking: I believe because they are outside of the city limit that smoking is allowed (maybe just outside?), and I wish it wasn't. Totally doesn't mesh with the vibe. What They Do So Right: 1) Seclusion: Want to get away and not be surrounded by people or overhear the interstate? Then this is the Northern Monroe County winery for you. Don't get me wrong I love Oliver, but this is just a quieter experience...which sometimes is exactly what you want! 2) Porch: They have a nice covered porch area, great for grabbing a bottle, some of the food they have available (note: they don't have a ton, we often bring our own picnic items), and sit with your friends. 3) Vineyards: Walk around the vineyards and the pond, keep an eye out for wildlife (I have seen bald eagles there twice). 4) Sweet Wine: This is Indiana, we get cold weather and that means sweeter wines. The Cassis Noir is amazing (said by a dry drinker who just thinks this one sweet wine really has it together) and the deep currant flavor makes it an amazing wine for dessert or for cooking glazes. 5) Accessibility: Plenty of parking (including for buses) and they are handicap accessible. read more

Had a great time this past weekend at Butler Winery. We really enjoyed their wines and while it's not as large or commercialized as Oliver, the flavor is still excellent. I liked that it was tucked away in the country side off a winding country road. Jim Butler who shares his name with my Uncle, was happy to oblige us in a quick tour of their production area. He was incredibly knowledgeable. There was still snow on the ground but I can imagine this place is packed and gorgeous during the spring, summer and fall. I enjoyed all of their sweet reds as did my bf. We bought 3 bottles. If you take a day trip to Bloomington, this place is worth a stop! I ordered a beer homebrewing kit for my husband over the phone before Christmas. Days after it should have arrived, I called Butler to check on why the package was late. Someone (who had my credit card information) had forgotten to place my order. I was given a small discount on my order, but was left scrambling to have a family member in town pick it up and bring it home for Christmas, because it was too late to ship at this point. Also by this time, not all of the kit components were available, meaning that my sister had to make another stop weeks later to get the missing pieces. My husband's gift was unusable for several weeks. After this, we finally started to brew his first batch of beer but found that the wrong piece was included in the kit and did not fit the lid at all, which altered the way we were able to brew this batch (without a secondary fermentation, forcing us to bottle immediately instead). After a lecture about how we ordered right before inventory was taken (because someone at Butler forgot to place and ship my order), Butler finally agreed to send the stopcock that they omitted from the shipment but sent it to the wrong address. I wouldn't do business here again. My husband called again to see when we would receive the missing piece. Snarky Susie informed my husband that she would send the piece without charge. After yelling at my husband some more, she said it would be sent (finally). The customer service is appalling- shop elsewhere, like Upland or Oliver. Great Fermentations in Indy is where we will be shopping from now on. read more
