When people think of whiskey in Indiana's Brown County, they might think of that other place. (You know the one.) But there is another distillery quietly making small-batch, high-quality spirits in Nashville, and that's Bear Wallow Distillery. Located just outside of downtown Nashville, Bear Wallow Distillery is one of the only female-owned distilleries in the country. They create their spirits in a traditional copper pot still, which I learned is unique. Inside the tasting room, you can enjoy a whiskey tasting or a flight, or sip a craft cocktail and relax in the shop. I chose to enjoy a "Call Me Old Fashioned" standing up at the bar, while chatting with the guy who made me my drink. My Old Fashioned was well balanced, not too sweet and made me feel all warm inside, as a good Old Fashioned should. Those who are interested in learning more about the whiskey-making craft can go on a Farm-to-Fifth Tour, which takes you behind the scenes to learn about the history of whiskey and see the full production process. I did, and I found it very informative! I had a new appreciation for the kind of whiskey and spirits they are making here at Bear Wallow Distillery. One of our favorite distilleries--this is always a must-stop whenever we visit Brown County in Nashville. Our favorite cocktail is the Apple Pie Shake-Up, and it never disappoints. We love that they walk you through all the ingredients and even give you recipe cards so you can try to make it at home. Somehow it's never quite the same when we make it ourselves, which is exactly why we keep coming back to enjoy it firsthand. When we visited, there were 3-4 small groups of people hanging out, talking and drinking. The service was friendly. When you drive up, it looks like a small warehouse. Super friendly staff. There was a large group there for a motorcycle event, so we had to wait in line for a while before being able to order. I wasn't bothered by the wait because it gave us a chance to browse their merchandise, but the woman at the register came over and apologized to us about the wait. They guy doing our tasting was also very friendly and very knowledgeable about all of the products. We did a tasting of several whiskies. I felt a little rushed since I'm more of a sipper than shot gulper, but I can understand that they were busy and trying to keep things moving. They have some fun infusion jars, and we bought 3 that I'm excited to try out. (The jars have stuff like spices, fruit, & peppers that you add your own alcohol to.) This was a fun pit-stop on our drive to Bloomington, and I'm sure we'll be back next time we're in that area. read more

Bear Wallow Distillery is less than a mile off of State Road 46 located on Old State Road 46. Look for the blue highway signs on State Road 46 in Gnaw Bone for their signs. If you're on the way to Nashville, Indiana or the North entrance to Brown County State Park stop by Bear Wallow first. It's a fun and informative distillery that is family operated with friendly, enthusiastic and proud owners. They use 100% Indiana grown grains from local Farmers. How cool is that?! Bear Wallow has summer and winter hours so check their website. Dogs are welcome on the patio but not inside so take that into consideration if you want to take the tour or hang out at the bar. Samples and drinks can be enjoyed in the patio area. Outdoor seating with picnic tables is available right outside the entrance. As soon as you enter the distillery you'll find numerous Bear Wallow items to browse and purchase. A few items that caught my eye, and my debit card, were adorable "Your Not Drinking Along" dog and cat coasters, BBQ sauce, seasonings, a large golf ball ice cube molds (for my husband's bourbon), along with football and baseball ice cubes molds for other sport's fans. We were offered samples of the Bloody Mary mix which I loved. It's not hot just full of flavors. I love to drink just Bloody Mary mix and their's is so good. Other brands are hot just to be hot without seasonings and flavor but this isn't the case with Bear Wallow's Bloody Mary mix. If you're into grilling don't pass up the bourbon soaked chips. Also, many Bear Wallow T-shirts to select from and 2 furry bears to entertain you in the corner. Now to the liquor! From unaged whiskey (moonshine) to aged whiskey at 80 to 115 proof and let's not forget the flavored moonshines (Salted Carmel, think Cider, Peach, ice tea maybe, Apple Pie, Watermelon, Banana Foster and others). You can sample a Whiskey Tasting Flight of 6 for $5 at the bar. My husband and I enjoyed talking to the owner while sampling his flight. The "Farm-to-Fifth Tour" starts at the top of each hour and is for ALL ages. Of course, you need to be 21 and over to enjoy the samples. We missed the tour but enjoyed the flights, conversation and shopping. If your not in Gnaw Bone, you can find Bear Wallow Spirits at Big Red Liquors and Payless Liquors plus a couple other liquor stores. An impromptu overnight cabin trip to Brown County had us on the hunt for dog-friendly attractions and voila! Bear Wallow fit the bill! I've had this spot bookmarked for quite some time and was thrilled to learn that their patio was dog friendly. You'll conveniently find a spigot for water out there as well This women-owned distillery features a line up of moonshines and whiskeys along with flavored offerings like strawberry rhubarb. You can opt to do a tasting at the bar ($6-8, I believe?) and they have plenty of options to fit all palettes. The best part? Their staff is incredibly friendly and hospitable which makes the entire experience ten times more fun! Don't leave without trying their maple syrup samples! We ended up ordering two of the shake up cocktails ($8/drink): the Old Fashioned-y and their take on a mojito (which features Wilks & Wilson elixirs). We've driven by the sign for this distillery but never stopped in. Since we were in the area we decided to drop in and do a tour and tasting. So first thing you must know is that Bear Wallow only has whiskey, aged and unaged whiskey. Their tour is very affordable and it comes with a tasting at the end. The tasting room is cozy and the folks behind the bar are happy to serve you a drink. And I did like the fact that they don't rush you to pay. The tour was informative the guide was very knowledgeable and was willing to answer our questions. It is not a big facility but you can tell it is a labor of love everyone seemed happy to be there. We just love it here! The drinks are great and the service is just as good. Everyone working is just so friendly. There were 4 of us. We got a total of 6 cocktails, 1 tasting, 1 mocktail, and bought a syrup to go. The blackberry lemonade was our favorite cocktail. It's not on their menu, but one bartenders ended making it because my boyfriend said he really like blackberries. They have a couple of warm cocktails since it's still winter. My friend, Leanna got the warm apple cider and then another. I'm not a big drinker, but I did get the pomegranate whiskey sour. It was good, but not as good at the blackberry lemonade. I'm a light weight and was a little warm after the first cocktail (hahaha), so I ordered a mocktail instead. I loved it. It's was like drinking sweet sweet sugary syrup. read more

When you have a mid-week day off to play hooky with the intention to hike all day....but weather threatens the afternoon sunshine, you look for other things to do in the area. And Bear Wallow was one of the first things to pop up in a search of things to do in Nashville/Brown County. So after 8 miles of hiking and some pizza for lunch, we decided to swing by Bear Wallow Distillery, just a little bit before it started raining. Tours are about 30 minutes long, and run on the hour. If you get there a little early, get yourself a cocktail, which you can also bring along on the tour. The head distiller was our tour guide the day we went. Not his usual job, but I think he did great! Gave us the run down of the process and of their products, with lots of information about their focus on keeping it local. And of course, every tour ends with a tasting (for those of age)! Tour and tasting together = $6. Just tasting = $4. But on to that tasting! There are three aged products, three un-aged 'white dog' type of products, and 8 flavored moonshines (they call everything whiskey, but to make the distinctions...ya know). You get to taste up to 6 of their products. The aged stuff is pretty tasty and I love me some flavored moonshine. The salted caramel and maple flavors were my favorite! Now that I am retired, I love taking day trips around Central Indiana and discovering things that I never took time for while working. So, with a little advance scouting of the Nashville area, I found this great new distillery just southeast in Gnaw Bone. Opening four years ago, this family owned business has been making locally supplied whiskey and moonshine. All the ingredients (corn, wheat, rye, and barley) come from farms in Columbus or Lebanon. Located on Old State Road 46 just a short distance east of the Brown County State Park, this business has its own parking lot and a patio on the south side (the entrance side) where you can enjoy sipping a cocktail. Inside, we were greeted by the owner and were glad to have arrived at the "top of the hour" so that I could go on a tour ($10). Adam, the guy in charge of the actual distilling, led me to the back of the building where he showed me equipment and ingredients used in making their products. Each piece of equipment has a specific function and with the advancement in technology, a lot of the process can be monitored to improve quality. What was especially impressive was the efficiency and rewarding relationships that the distillery has worked out with its suppliers so that there is minimal waste. (i.e. the used mash that is a byproduct of the distilling is returned back to the farms to be used as food for the livestock instead of just dumping the mash to waste.) Some of the processes are still hands on, so the staff seems to keep busy between transferring the products between stages, then to barrels, or to bottling/labeling. When the tour was done, the owner then displayed about a dozen bottles of whiskeys and fruited moonshines and walked me through the flavor profiles of each. I got to pick six samples to try based upon her descriptions (note, the samples are small so that you aren't put at risk for driving.) The flavors were quite diverse and since I am new to whiskey, I found myself drawn to the less potent moonshines (about 40 proof instead of 80 like the whiskeys.) My wife joined me for the tastings and we ended up buying three: a front porch lemonade; a fresh peach; and a salted caramel moonshine. All were good to sip by themselves but could easily be turned into a cocktail. Special: buy three bottles and save $10, enough to pay for your tour! I really enjoyed talking with the folks there and recommend the tour as a great way to understand the process of distilling. Definitely do the tasting to get an idea of the wide range of flavors available. I didn't think I liked whiskey before...now, I look forward to my next visit! Review #853 read more

This place is great! We came here for their distillery tour and some drinks. I had their lemon drop moonshine. It was delicious and refreshing, strong enough but not overpowering. The tour was interesting and nice to hear about a smaller family operated distillery. I believe the tour and tasting was $10 which is definitely a great price. The shop inside was super cute and had tons of nice unique things. This is a great option outside the larger distillery tours and in the area. Moonshine and Whiskey sampling at 2pm on a Monday? Don't judge me. We sought out Bear Wallow Distillery based on suggestions from fellow Yelpers and were SO delighted to learn that Bear Wallow chose to be open on MLK day! Side note -- make sure to check their hours and even call ahead if needed -- especially in the 'off season'. They are located off of Old Indiana 46 -- off the main drag leading in to Nashville, IN. Some apps map it off just a tad, but keep looking -- it's there! We were warmly and promptly greeted as we entered Bear Wallow and were told about the specials for the day -- a Bloody Mary and some delight called a "Hot Apple Pie". I had both. Again -- don't judge me. My bloody mary was one of the best I have ever had -- and it wasn't even 'doctored up' with all kinds of fancy ingredients. Gimme a Ball Jar full of that goodness any time, any day. The Hot Apple Pie...what can I say? It was a warm gulp of heaven on a chilly day. I wanted it to be bottomless. Sigh. The hubs had a "Moonshine Shake Up" made with Gingerbread syrup. Yummo. For a small $2 fee, you can sample all of the spirits made in house (4). Go for it. They make their own corn based whiskeys, moonshine, and aged bourbon. During our sampling, each bottle was explained in detail and we were educated on how each one differed from the previous/next. So cool. Our host even took the time to explain the bourbon making process and brought out a cross section of the barrel to further explain this loving process to us. Amazing. They have their spirits, tons of flavored syrups/mixers (Wilks & Wilson and others), local honey, and other cool goodies for purchase on site as well. I would classify this place as having a down home-groovy-cozy-lodgey-warehousey feel. Sidle on up to the bar for samples and then wander around or take a seat to enjoy your concoction. Seating is limited -- only a few stools at the bar, some barrel seats by the garage door, and there are no tables to speak of, but we liked it because it kept us moving and discovering and asking questions. The staff was very engaging. We never felt rushed or that we were bothering them with our random questions. We later learned that the amazing couple chatting us up and helping us out were indeed the owners. SO cool, knowledgeable, and personable. I love a good distillery so i was so excited to try it. We started with the tour, normally $8 and includes a tasting, very informative and the staff was nice. I finally learned the difference between devil's cut and angel's share, so that was neat. We first tried the whisky, very good and tasted nice, then we tried the moonshine, they had 10 flavors, to be honest i was not a fan of those, but u don't know till i try them. We did buy a bottle of the bear trap, tasted like tequila and i love tequila! This place was nice and its right acrosd the street from my favorite winery, so i was able to stock up! What a treat to visit this place. After a long day of hiking at Brown County Park and eating in downtown Nashville, we decided to visit this place on the way out. Good things all around for this place. Having opened in 2012, they're still a small operation. It might be the best whiskey that I've tasted outside of KY. Entering this place is cozy! I bet this place would be amazing to work at during the bitter cold months of winter. The gift shop you walk into is cabin like with all of their products. Small barrels, seasonal stuff, spirits, syrups, apparel, and many other products line the walls. The tour and tasting is 6 dollars. If you opt to just do the tasting, it's 2 dollars cheaper. The tasting includes 6 samples. They also have cocktails that you order. They tout themselves as whiskey. They have an un-aged(practically moonshine) drink, a mixer, another un-aged product(practically a higher proofed moonshine), three different aged(bourbon), and 8 flavored drinks(Think flavored over the counter moonshine, but better). With that being said, the impression I got is that they don't want to be referred to as moonshine. Enter moonshine shake-up cocktails.. My lady and I decided to try the coffee bean and strawberry moonshine shake-ups. Her coffee bean was more like a White Russian while my strawberry was more like lemonade. Tasty! I'd say my favorite is their un-aged high proof product named Bear-Trap! It's 120 proof of clear good stuff. It is on the higher priced side at 38 bucks for 750 mL, but in comparison... buying 126-128 proofed Booker's will run you 14-15 dollars more here in KY. So thinking of it that way... it's a steal. They'll receive top remarks from me with their bourbon. Now I'll admit that it's not my favorite, but it's still tasty. The number one thing that sticks out is that it starts at 100 proof! You might not take me seriously but believe me when I say this... THANK YOU! So many companies want to start out at 90 proof and lower. Everyone's base product should be 100 proof and Bear Wallow is doing it! A million kudos... SERIOUSLY! On to their flavored stuff. Their flavored stuff is on the equivalent side of flavored corporate Tennessee moonshine, but it's better than that stuff. They have many flavors to choose from including blackberry, peach, apple pie, lemonade, chocolate raspberry, salted caramel, maple, and most recently candy cane. They're good. Low proof. I also loved that the flavors didn't seem as sweet as the moonshine competitors in Tennessee. Another win for Bear Wallow! The tour is around 20-30 minutes. The master distiller gave us a tour and it was perfect. He was ready with any questions thrown at him. It's quite obvious that this place is doing well and that it'll continue to grow. I plan to make it back here for another tour as they grow. The last thing to bring up about this place is the name. Bear Wallow. There is bear merchandise throughout! I purchased a tour/tasting for my boyfriend and I for Christmas. We had an absolute blast! When we arrived, we had to wait about a half-an-hour for the next tour, but that wasn't an issue! We decided to go ahead and do our tasting first. All of the whiskeys and moonshines were delicious! I especially enjoyed the lemonade and maple flavored moonshines. Perfect to have in the fall AND the summer! The owner provided facts about each alcohol along with tasting tips as we sampled. After that, I ordered a $7 Yule Mule to sip while we browsed the store. It was super yummy! The tour was very informative. Grandpa Bear kept it fun while answering any question thrown at him. This place is a little off the beaten path, but there are signs on the highway to guide you. My boyfriend and I were so happy to see that the distillery was filled with plenty of happy patrons.
