It's too bad I waited a little long to write this review as I forgot a few of the dishes ordered and certainly the names. But to sum it up, you are best going with a group as it is share plates and you have a menu based on the local season and ingredients, and ultimately whatever is inspired by the chef. This was my last meal on QC and I believe one of the best if not the best. I lucked up and got a seat at the bar. The place is small and intimate with a warm vibe. I ordered 2 things the Chantrelle (sp) mushrooms dish, the pasta with pork ragu and the strawberry shortcake. The mushroom was so good I could have drank the broth, the pasta was cooked perfectly with a unique flavor. Lastly, the strawberry shortcake was fresh and not overly sweet. Genuinely one of the best places I've ever eaten at. And I eat out A LOT. Sometimes when you take a bite, you can tell that it's just a job for the chef. This was not the case here. In a nutshell: local, delicious and highly recommended. We were lucky to snag a reservation (and suggest you do as well!). We had a table right in the middle of the restaurant ideal for taking in the very relaxed space and seeing tasty dishes float by on their way to other diners. The staff was super friendly and really knowledgeable about their extensive wine list. Bang for your buck recommendation: get a recommendation on a Canadian wine that suits your tastes and go for a bottle. We had a killer Pinot Noir from outside of Montreal that hit all the right notes for the meal. And what a meal! Over summer, the staff spent time packaging sunshine for later to drop on your plate and remind you of warmer times. Their work became a memorable canned tomato and fermented pepper sauce for the ricotta gnocchi that made below freezing February feel like peak summer for a few moments. On my first trip to Quebec City in many years, I had planned to make sure to eat many of its staples: crepes, poutine, meat pies, etc. Ultimately, though most of my experiences were an exercise in trying something new, they failed to truly impress me. Duck confit crepes are great! But I can live without having tried it. Looking at Buvette Scott's menu didn't immediately scream QUEBEC CITY to me (please, correct me if I'm wrong!), but by the end of my trip I really just wanted to have a great meal. Luckily I happened to come at a fantastic time: the first radish harvest of the year, which was heavily featured in two of the three dishes I ended up ordering. My first dish was the most radish-forward of the trio. I think the best way to describe it would be as leafy radish with more frills attached. Here, I learned that what can be construed as "blandness" from fresh radish can actually become a fantastic canvas for other flavours. The tahini was less nutty than some of the best tahini I have had, but that was not to its detriment. In my opinion, a very strong tahini would have masked the beautiful natural taste of this radish. Truly, good food starts with the ingredients. Next, I had a scallop dish, with a lettuce cream, radish, and most surprisingly: roe. The cream was unbelievable -- really all I need to say. I had actually asked the server to pick my meal -- so each dish was a surprise, and the final one of the night was one that I had been hoping he would choose: ravioli with a shrimp bisque. The ricotta that filled the ravioli was homemade -- and I could tell! Absolutely delicious, and the sauce was good enough that I could have had it alone as a soup. Really couldn't have capped my trip any better, and both the food and vibes were perfect. I plan on being back in the city soon, and will make sure to visit Buvette Scott again. read more

I was expecting to taste the tartness of rhubarb, but no, on the sweet side with only a sliver of cooked rhubarb on top. Wine and cider pours were approximately 1/3 of a glass. Considering this is one of the top rated Yelp joints in Canada, I wasn't really feeling that it lived up to that standard. While the entree options were interesting, I wouldn't say the meal blew me away. We started with oysters. These were fresh and tasty. I found the duck heart dish to be interesting and the flavors to be unique. But at the end of the day I didn't think the duck hearts tasted much better than a normally executed skirt steak. When you walk into this place, the warmth and intimacy grab you right away. This place has about 25 chairs total ensuring you will be the focus of the house. Our reservations were for 5:30, which was ideal because it was the same time as their oyster special. 2 dozens oysters please. The oysters were well shocked and came with lemon wedges and a pickle mignonette. Then we were off to try the duck ham and the pork pressé. Both were very good and the duck ham being like a unique jamón serrano. For our mains, we shared the lions mane mushrooms, the pappardelle, the white sausage and beans, the crusiferous, and the fried walleye. The standouts were certainly the lions mane and the white sausage. We finished our meals with the pear sorbet and the almond cake. The unique beer selection was also a great surprise. Truly deserves a 5 star rating!!! Buvette Scott is a quant, upscale restaurant located in Old Quebec. As soon as we walked in, we knew we made the right choice for dinner: the restaurant was fully booked and everyone there was a local French Canadian. The people there looked like they frequent this restaurant, AKA, this is where the locals go! We realized that the menu changes every day, it is written in French on the chalkboard. Our waiter, Dave, was absolutely super. He brought us a menu in English and gave us time to think about it. While not all of the words translated perfectly to English, we were genuinely excited about what we were about to eat! Dave recommended we try an orange wine--he shared that it comes from a special grape grown in Italy that gives an orange color. I can hands down say this was the best wine I have ever tried. I wish I had bought a bottle then and there. The food was delicate and scrumptious. Each meal was prepared with love and served one at a time. The potato dish was a perfect balance of tomato and herb flavors. The homemade Ragu was melt in your mouth soft. I believe it was accompanied with veal and this was the most juicy and tender veal I have had the pleasure of enjoying. The dessert was astounding and I felt the touch of every local ingredient: a nearby farm's maple syrup, pure pears, etc. An excellent execution of flavor and texture. All in all, top of the line cuisine. And even though we were the only non-Quebec people dining, I felt we were treated equally and with adequate attention. I was nervous about trying this restaurant because a lot of the pictures on Yelp feature various meats, and I learn toward vegetarian. I also worried that as an American they might be annoyed with me. The street it is on is steep, and with the ice, I thought I might kill myself! And the restaurant was tiny. I had to wait for my reservation. BUT OMG. First, they were so nice and offered me a menu in English. And then I was there for 3 hours. I'm not sure I've ever had a dinner last so long, but it was actually perfect. The time between courses allowed me not to become stuffed, and everything was delicious! Not pretentious. There are not many restaurants like this one. They deliver a spectacular fine dining experience in medium sized dishes to be shared. Despite the creative and thoughtful menu which changes regularly, the vibe is entirely casual focused on good food and great wine/ beer moreover than on any pretense or requisite stuffy decorum. Our waiter described each dish in abundant detail. We had a spectacular sparkling wine for which I cannot for the life of me provide a just description. Something about no sulfites? Whatever it was, it was served perfectly chilled, and often. In order , we had oysters from New Brunswick served with an apple mignonette, homemade bread and maitre d'hotel butter, zucchini and onion bhaji served on an eggplant puree, a charcuterie and cheese plate, a gnocchi dish, and an arctic char dish. We finished with a strawberry and creme anglaise clafoutis. It was all extraordinary. After finishing the bottle of sparkling wine and ordering another couple of glasses of the same beverage, we wanted to cap the night off with a digestif. We asked the waiter what they had to offer us and he simply replied "Do you want me to bring you sweet things? " You don't say no to a question like that, and you don't ask any further questions. You just say yes and trust that something good is about to happen. He brought us a sweet vermouth made from macerated apples. Served chilled, it was sweet yet slightly bitter. Just perfect and unique. We had him top up our glasses a second time before leaving this cherished establishment highly buzzed with smiles on our faces. This is the type of experience that nourishes the soul. The food is spectacular and served in small enough portions that you can sample eight or nine dishes. It is also extremely inexpensive in relation to the quality and expertise that clearly goes into the preparation. Appetizers are all under $10 and the main courses if you want to call it that are for the most part under $20. The small restaurant was packed to capacity and had to turn away those diners brazen enough to attempt a visit without a reservation. You should not leave Quebec without a visit here! read more

To start, we ordered bread and butter along with some marinated vegetables (great appetizers). Then, some fresh oysters from PEI to tie us over until entrées arrived. I was in town for a conference, staying at the Delta Marriott down the street. I opened Yelp to find somewhere closeby to get some good food. Buvette Scott was closeby and had very good reviews so I decided to walk there. Small chalkboard on the sidewalk was inviting, offering half price oysters. It's a small place, but very comfortable and casual. I sat at the bar because I was by myself. Etienne greeted me. He was bartending, but then I learned he was also serving, and running food. I ordered several plates of food - different courses, along with drinks. Etienne was one of the most attentive people I have encountered in a restaurant. He was extremely polite, knowledgeable, and had a very keen sense of exactly when he was needed or not. His English was very good, thankfully for me. He was intimately familiar with the bar and food menus, but also had a vast knowledge and understanding of all kinds of things. He was able to hold a good conversation no matter what the topic. The chefs in the kitchen were busting their butts while keeping everything super clean, neat, and organized. It was amazing to watch how much they could get done in such a small space. That first night (I went back the next night for more) I enjoyed an excellent glass of Barbera with New Brunswick Oysters on the half shell, an incredible creamy endive salad with mango and orange, and sauteed duck hearts with an incredible rosti (hashbrown) served up with rich flavorful reductions made in house. I was intrigued by the house-made charcuterie platter, so I asked for a taste of that. Etienne put together a nice little plate for me with some fresh sourdough bread he had made earlier that day. Unbelievable. I had more oysters for dessert along with a special Negroni digestif that I could not reproduce even if I tried. It is very unusual for me to go to the same restaurant twice when visiting somewhere. But I had to. I returned to Buvette Scott the next night. Started with oysters and loved them. Cracked fresh to order. Chef Tony Rock was in the house, along with Etienne, the other Chef (big beard, bad ass dude), and another very high energy server/bartender whose name escapes me now. I ate more oysters, a hand made pasta dish with anchovies, almonds, basil, and egg - all fresh, presented beautifully, and full of flavor. Again I sat at the bar and observed, and listened. The staff worked like a well oiled machine. The kitchen was impeccable. The communication was outstanding. The music on the record player hit the spot. Etienne hooked me up with his special Negroni (best I've had). Time was so well spent. I enjoyed it and already recommended the restaurant to a few colleagues who live locally. Definitely try to come before 7 pm to take advantage of their fantastic oysters at a good price. 1/$1.50 itd be hard to find another place with such a great deal with that quality. My boyfriend and I ordered a dozen and ended up ordering another half dozen. The bison was incredibly tasty and wish I had more of it. It encourages us to order a second dish...the fiddlehead, which was cooked well and had well balanced earthy flavors that were refreshing after the meaty bison. I went here because I was living nearby for a month and noticed that it seemed packed. Looked it up on yelp and saw the 5-star average review so decided to give it a try. My brother told me that the owner used to be his neighbour, so this is a locally-owned bar where they also serve food. We called to reserve a table, and were happy we did because it is a small place and got packed quite early. We ordered a few drinks, which were good. The food was not as good as people described it though. They have a menu that often changes, so the menu was written on the board (you can snap a picture of it if you don't want to end up with bad head neck / torticoli). We tried their 3 tomatoes salad (rating 4/5), their pasta (2.5-3/5), and a plate of maquereau (3.5/5). My friend also ordered the pasta and did not enjoy it.. The staff were nice but it was a bit hard to get their attention because they were only two and were quite busy. The table next to us ordered the feasan which looked really good, to share for 2 ppl. Maybe we did not pick the right meals, but when the salad is the best part of your meal. I would come back for a drink, but not for a full meal. We walked in around 5:30 on a Friday night and were met with a friendly 'bon jour' when they realized we didn't speak French they were very accommodating. The food and was amazing! We went without a reservation and were faced with a rude employee whose attitude is what transpires this review. He spoke French to us and when we said we do not understand he proceeded to respond with an edgy tone, that this is a French country and how can he know that we don't speak the language. Of course French is spoken in Quebec and we are fully aware but based on the volume of tourists, it is not necessary to offend your potential customers. Some tips: Make sure to call ahead for a reservation as it fills quick. It's very small with a few bar seats and maybe 25ish? seats at tables. Also, it can get kinda hot in there so dress lightly. the window seat looking out is the best since you get airflow and can people watch. It's on a very steep hill and isn't really stroller friendly. We had ours with but left the base outside and just brought in the car seat. Bathrooms have no change table and are small, but I know this isn't really a place that would cater to kids.
