We recently did a 2-hour Tiki cruise for my mom's birthday, and had such a great time! The boat…read moredeparts from a bar/restaurant on the water so there's plenty of parking and you can grab a drink or a bite (and use the bathrooms--there's none on the boat) before or after. The boat itself is literally a round, floating tiki bar on the water. It holds up to 6 people plus the captain. You can bring your own drinks (recommend taking a page out of our book and bringing a pitcher of pre-made painkillers with you for the ride!) and snacks, and they provide water and drinking ice. You can also connect to bluetooth speakers to play your own music. Our captain was great, he chatted with us throughout the ride, pointing out wildlife and sharing little tidbits about the landmarks and history of the area as we cruised around. As you'd expect this thing doesn't move very quickly, but it made for a really relaxing ride with plenty of time to check out the views, enjoy a few drinks, and gawk at all the houses and boats along the shore. We went around 6:30pm and it was perfect for beating the heat and catching some sunset. Would totally do this again for a special occasion or with out of town visitors!

We learned about how the garden was used for medicinal purposes and food. We got to feed the chickens! We learned about cooking in colonial times. We learned about how cannons work and saw a can fired off a ship! We learned about how a print shop worked and even got to help print something! We also saw a cabin built by and for enslaved people, and learned how life changed for them after emancipation. It was such a fun day and I want to go back!

I was able to walk around the property on the paved pathways and not only see and read about the history of the buildings, but also hear from live historians and some of the locations. I arrived later in the afternoon and received my ticket at a discounted price ($3.50) compared to the $10 admission fee charged during the day for adults. I loved learning the history of this area while visiting from out of town. I highly recommend stopping if you can, but do give yourself minimum 2 hours (or more!!) to get through everything. I emailed CAPT Phil to make the arrangements and he promptly got back to me with pricing, location of his dock, and confirmation of our reservation. Payment was not expected until the evening of the cruise, and when I called to inquire about weather restrictions (we've had crazy rain this summer!) all my questions were answered. Following my husband's promotion ceremony, my family and I drove out to the pier and mingled with CAPT Phil under his tiki pavilion, which was charmingly decorated and had tables and cornhole games until time to load the boat. Although there were chips and bottled water onboard, we were permitted to bring a cooler with wine, cheese, and other snacks to enjoy our family event. CAPT Phil even showed my two young sons his crab pots and let my 7 year old drive the boat! Shortly into our cruise, the boat's engine started to overheat, so for safety CAPT Phil told us we needed to call for backup. But we were on the water, watching the beautiful sunset, enjoying our snacks and family company, so it didn't matter!! CAPT Phil's son brought a second boat to tow us back to the dock, which my boys LOVED watching! In the end, we were still out on the water for the same amount of time as we'd arranged for the cruise...but CAPT Phil refused to take our money and let us pay for the excursion. He told us just to book another evening on the water, which we will absolutely do! Thanks Captain Phil, for a wonderful evening, in spite of the unforeseen challenges we had a blast and can't wait to do it again!
