Hired Ben to refinish a master bathroom for the second time in a year. Bathroom came out perfect - very happy with the result. Perfect tile cuts and the shower has a lot of character. Benny Leto is a crook, pure and simple. Took $2000 from us to purchase and install a new front door. Told us it was a "back order and would take a few weeks to come in." Well, 3 months later I come to find out, he had taken the money, never ordered the door, and was now pleading poverty and couldn't pay us back. I was super patient, I had listened to this guys sob story about his bad divorce and his struggle to win over his kids who "hate him" and felt bad for him. Offered to let him pay us back in installments. Kept getting excuses and Benny begging and pleading that he was "not gonna f you, I'm not a scumbag". Guess what? He F-Ed us. After a couple of weeks he stopped responding to messages entirely. The work he DID do was mediocre at best, and took about 3 times as long as he promised it would take. And he doesn't do any of it. It's a couple of day laborers. So if you want the same quality work, with no danger of getting ripped off and more reasonable prices, just buy the supplies you need and grab a couple of day laborers outside of your nearest Home Depot. Literally the same thing minus having this weasel in your life. And if this is the way he conducts business in all facets of his life, suddenly I don't blame his kids. My biggest regret is to have hired BVL (Ben Leto) to build my two patios. The nightmare started in 2018. Things were going well in the very beginning, and it looked like a very nice job. Of course it took longer than the original contract stated, because there were a lot of no show days and time lapses for whatever reason. But he was always on time to ask for the next payment. When it was finally almost completed, I noticed our smaller patio was collecting pockets of water after it rained or when the sprinklers were on. Also on the other patio, water was collecting in certain spots. So I mentioned it to one of his workers (because he was hardly there most of the time, even though upon signing the contract said he would be there all the time and he does only one job at a time - not true). The worker said he would let Ben know, but of course it was never addressed, even after numerous calls and texts. At that point he pretty much abandoned any little things that needed to be completed. I had to practically beg him to take all the leftover stuff on my driveway. He also left a hole in my driveway and refused to return to repair it. Fast forward to now, long story short, due to the fact that the drain system he put in is was not large enough, nor was the patio pitched correctly or evenly, I am now facing flooding issues every time it rains hard. A few heavy storms have resulted in so much water accumulating that the excess goes down the basement steps and floods my basement. I tried reporting it to our City inspectors since I took out a permit (and they failed to inspect it originally, but that's another issue). They came out finally with him to take a look and after determining that it needs a bigger drain, nothing happened. He was summoned to court and of course a no show. The City did not pursue and nothing happened, nor did he try to make good on it. I then filed a complaint to Consumer Affairs and submitted all documents and pictures, and they are investigating it along with few other complaints from other customers. They advised that once they have everything they need, he will be contacted/served (whatever that means). That's all well and good, but we're going on 3 full years of this and a basement that needs to have work done including ripping up all flooring/baseboards. Also living in fear from the next storm. This is the biggest mistake I have made in going with BVL. I live in Glen Rock and we initially got an estimate for around $15000+ for paver patio and pergola for a work to be completed by end of July/August 2017. Based on contract I paid 5000+ as initial installment. I was told that everything is included in the quote. and when town asked for permit and drawings I had to pay extra for drawings to architect they recommended. The drawings are not to scale and town rejected them. After numerous phone calls and lot of discussion with town and BVL I determined to not go forward with project. BVL started work on the property without getting permit and removed by existing sidewalk. At the end they just finished the side walk and remove a 10*10 patio. They just silently walked out after that without returning me the balance of initial payment I made. To just get that done it took almost two months and I and still leaving them messages and voice messages to return me partial money which was owed to me. I work hard to take care of my family and other things. and My money is now stuck with them. This is really horrible experience and I would stay away from this team. read more

Hired Ben to finish our basement. The contract said it would be completed in 4-5 weeks start to finish. He/his employees started working on March 9, 2020. The job was not completed until Sept 7, 2020, requiring constant follow up from me to get him here. I even told him I have no problem with it taking a little bit longer due to COVID (so I discounted the month of April), but I never anticipated it would take 6 months, although he always has a reason for his delays. He also worked on other jobs during this time despite telling me he "only takes on one job at a time". After the job was completed, I had our heating company come to make sure the basement heat worked and water started coming out of the wall as pipes behind the wall were not capped. In fact, the pipes should not have been capped as they were for our heating system. He blamed me that he didn't know what the pipe was for and said he would fix the hole in the wall... where water was gushing out, but if I wanted a baseboard put in (as should have been done), I would have to pay him additional for this. Avoid him at all costs. He is a horrible contractor and a poor business man. read more

We hired Ben to refinish & stain our hardwood floors and put down bamboo flooring in rooms that were carpeted. He and his team do such amazing work and we could not be happier with the results. Our house is from 1929 and the uneven quirky floors were a bit of a challenge but Ben had a solution for every problem and with the new floors the house feels cleaner, more fresh and up to date and we just love how it all turned out. We look forward to asking BVL to take on more projects in the future!! Highly highly recommend them!!!! read more

Stay away. Knew him personally and his lovely family who have nothing to do with this review. Hired him to redo my parents deck as both had passed and we were selling their house. The guy knows nothing. My father was a contractor and I grew up around old school real craftsmen and carpenters. Ben is a BS artist and doesn't have the skill or knowledge to be doing any of the jobs he is doing, that is why you see all of the problems in these reviews. It is a shame. The deck railings were wobbly, ballasters not the right distance apart to meet code and safety regulations, some were even missing. The top railing met unevenly and where the corners should dovetail they spliced together a few pieces like a jigsaw puzzle. Still have the pictures. Nothing was plum and my brother and I joked my poor father was rolling over in his grave. On the first birthday anniversary of my dad's death ironically, my brother, my husband, and my father's old Carpenter, God bless him, had to completely take apart Ben's work and do a real job in order to bring the deck up to code and get the house on the market.. We basically spent double because of the money we wasted with Ben. The Carpenter said it was some of the worst work he's ever seen in his 50 year career. Tried as nicely as possible to chase Ben down to get some money back multiple times ...good luck. Shame on us we should have known better. Please do stay away. read more

I hired Ben in the fall of 2015 to haul away some junk from my basement and do some concrete repair in preparation for selling my house. He did a really nice job with the concrete repair, thus saving me a really expensive inspection finding. He even got rid of a dead bird that I found in the basement and did not laugh too much at me when I freaked out about it. :-) After I moved, he came back and coordinated with my realtor when to pick up the rest of the stuff left in the house and trusted me to pay him promptly (which I did). If I'd known about this company sooner I'd have hired them to do more things. Ben is a great guy and if I were still in the area I would hire him again. Do not hire! As a business owner of several businesses for over a decade myself, this is the worst working experience I have endured. The owner initially told us his team would work 10hr days and deck job would be completed in 5 days. The owner spent maybe a total of 2hours at the job and his subcontractor who he hired to do the actual work came and worked 4hr days, no weekends, and even skipped days to go do other jobs which dragged our job out extensively. Then worse, when we brought their unsafe and below standard work that was performed to his attention, instead of finding solutions and fixing what needed to be redone, and providing new materials, he took zero accountability and then up'd and quit the job about half complete. We were left to find another company to redo his incorrect work (ie. Steps planned and approved by town to be 4' which were built by Bens team at 2' 9"...confirmed by several other companies), pay more money to the new hired company, and the job was obviously delayed even more. When we asked for our money back, he said there was no chance in returning our money even though he was clearly in breach of the contract to perform building a deck. I do not wish this level of Unprofessionalism on anyone or any business. I have since found legitimate deck builders so please feel free to reach out if in need. read more
