John Johansen is an honest, absolute professional. Recently did some work involving masonry and gutters. My garage was taking in a considerable amount of water through its walls, so much so that we were thinking we would need a french drain system, which would've been in excess of $10k. John walked through the property, identified the issue and gave me a quote via email promptly. We were happy with both the quoted price and the level of expertise shown. I had called for additional quotes before selecting Johansen, one from a mason and another from a waterproofing company, the mason said "$10k for a french drain" while the waterproofing company determined it was not a candidate and had suggested doing everything John had proposed. The day the work started I was very happy to see that John was actually working along his guys, having worked with other contractors in the past this is not always the case. My wife and I are very thankful to John. He took the time to clearly explain the scope of the work, he even showed us a few things around the house, for routine maintenance, being this is our first home. To say that we needed our garage repaired is an understatement. After years of being on the receiving end of rushing rainwater courtesy of a serious slope, the structure was on a hard lean. Plus there was ivy infiltrating the back wall, roots disrupting the slab, and a tree trunk pushing through the foundation. Yeah. That bad. When John saw it to give an estimate, he didn't run. He fully explained all the ways he could help - including pouring a slab and adding an irrigation system. He quoted a price that was fair. And most importantly, when it came down to it he delivered. Even when an unexpected setback threatened to derail the project, he was on site immediately providing solutions and getting construction back on track - and ahead of schedule. But it doesn't stop there. John was always easy to reach and got back to me right away if I had any questions - although usually he had explained everything to me so thoroughly I didn't need to ask. We worked with John and his team when we first bought our house in early 2021, he even volunteered to join us in the home inspection! In May 2022 we did a kitchen refresh and the Johansen Team executed the project really well. We brought John Johansen and his team in to retile our kitchen floors and install backsplash. They did a superb job on that, but they really went the extra mile. We encountered a few hiccups along the way (asbestos, termites, and mold), but John quickly brought in specialists to address each of these areas. While the project ended up being more involved than we originally intended, John managed the whole process in a timely and professional manner. Beyond the above, John and his team also installed an additional cabinet and counter top, closed up screw and nail holes in the walls that were there when we purchased the unit, and repainted several areas of our apartment. He also coordinated with an electrician to add a ceiling fan. We are thrilled with the results and love our new kitchen. John was extremely responsive over phone and text. John and his crew are amazing. They go above and beyond to make sure the job is done correctly. They came and fixed a temp job on my foundation and made sure the house is supported and up to code. Also had miscellaneous tasks like paver steps leading up to the house were loose. Originally I thought it was just he one but they made sure that the whole fight of steps were secured and had a fresh slathering of cement. There was also a loose block of limestone in the backyard that they addressed. Stress cracks on the side of the house were filled and a door frame stripped sealed and painted looking good as new again. Once the spring rolls around I'll be sure to give them my repeat business and take care of the rest of the concrete that I need fixed. Showed up on time and left early with everything plus more. They removed excess near one of my foundation drainage runs and removed the previous owners glued mirrors on the exterior of the wall in the back yard. Truly going above and beyond. John did work on my apartment in Hoboken right after I purchased it a year ago. He is a colorful character and was nice enough to come give me a free estimate before I closed which is not standard. He removed popcorn ceilings and painted. The work was completed actually in less time than his estimate and I am very happy with the results. Even my building's super commented on how the ceilings were done the right way. Only hiccup was with getting the insurance paperwork my building required to be filled out. I had to send it back to the lady he had me contact multiple times because she kept filling it out wrong. However, that's minor compared to having a reliable contractor who sticks to his quote and has the job done fast and right. There are not many of them out there. read more

Awesome. John was referred to us by someone who uses his services often, and we can see why! His quotes are reasonable, his work is high quality, and he and his crew are professional. He initially came to repair the front steps to our building, but also repaired our sidewalk to comply with our building insurance requests. He even installed a handrail for the back steps as a courtesy!! Woot woot!! He then took the time to walk around the building with us, and explain what should be done, what wasn't done properly, and some simple fixes we could do on our own. This was immensely helpful especially since one of the Owner's water heater was eroded and needed to be changed to comply with the fire code. He is very knowledgable and just a good guy! I'm writing this review because John's work is quality and timely, his communication is excellent, and his business morals/ethics should be the standard for all businesses to strive for. I've been away from my condo for the last year and a half (military deployment followed by training) and had a leak coming from above my window. John worked with me and my girlfriend, who lives with me, to give a quick estimate and repaired the leak. I had paid John for the repair, however my HOA accidentally sent him a check as well. John and his crew worked on a couple of projects at our home in Brookdale. We needed an area of our kitchen ceiling patched after we had to cut out a 3x3 ft piece in order to fix a previous plumbing issue. It now looks as if there was never an issue there to begin with! We also had a small 24 sq ft back entry way/porch that was in dire need of repair due to rotting wood. John quickly assessed the area and noticed that the problem was that rain water from the attached gutter was seeping under the porch and rotting it from the ground up. Considering that the rain water had no other option for egress, he suggested we go with limestone and concrete, instead of wood, since it would last longer and solve the rotting issue. Out of all of the suggestions we received from various other contractors, John was the only one that thought outside of the box! His quote for both projects were in line with what the other contractors had asked for, but his solution made the most sense. John and his team are extremely professional, took care of our home as if it were their own, were on time every day and finished a day earlier than expected. We hired John and his team to do interior painting and minor wall and door frame repairs in our new-to-us house. John spent 45 minutes doing a detailed walk-through of the house with me to generate an estimate. He pointed out both things we had noticed needed to be addressed as well as other details we hadn't considered, asking questions and providing helpful suggestions throughout. He documented the scope of work in a detailed fixed-price estimate, including paint. John and his team arrived on time and did high quality work, finishing earlier than expected and doing a great cleanup. John also noticed a gutter pipe that needed a little additional length and fixed it free of charge. We are really happy with the work and will talk to him about upcoming work in the living room in a few months' time. I have held off on writing this review for over a year for two reasons: 1. maxim: 'if you don't have anything positive to say, don't say anything' 2. who wants to be responsible for harming anyone's livelihood!? We worked with Johansen because of Yelp reviews solely. Since then I've been scolded by other Yelpers as not holding up the Yelp responsibility and have felt conflicted within as well since ignorance in this matter does not lead to bliss. Anyhow, the job done was: -incomplete, & -poorly executed The floor replaced now sags (immediately after replacement - not with use!) and causes walking difficulties/dangers and the wall length bookshelves replaced were completely inappropriate for load held and now sag ridiculously as well. If I could easily post a picture of it, you'd gasp. While there are many excuses as to why, I additionally took the time and effort to walk the finished project with Johansen (no small feat as I live across the country from my father's home where the work was done) with a detailed outline of EXACTLY what and where we requested follow up from poor execution. Johansen promised to follow through especially with respect to the ridiculous wall length bookshelves and creating supports to make it reasonable. Nothing's happened over a year later and all those details are now lost and forgotten along with any other attempts for a positive completion on Johansen's behalf. My wife and I bought a house that was recently renovated but not finished. John walked us through a number of the finishings, gave a fair estimate, and a 3-4 day time table. He showed up when promised with full staff, walked them through what they needed to do in each room. We needed paint in all rooms, trim that needed to be installed, puddied, painted. Unpainted doors, unpainted windows, an old bay window that was peeling, front door that needed tlc, chair railing that was unfinished.
