Store has beautiful clothing and an amazing selection of OluKai footwear, best I've seen. Maxine was an incredible sales person. When I couldn't find the size of the sandals I wanted, not only did she check the back, which I would have expected, she called around to the other stores looking for my size. When she found them at another store, she made sure the shoes were delivered by 9:30a the next morning, personally delivering them to the store herself. Mahalo Maxine! By the Sea's Olukai's display of footwear is what caught my attention when I first walked in. I have a hard time justifying spending $60+ for a pair of flip flops and casual shoes, but I do like the quality of Okukai's. BTS has a lot of sizes and styles available. The chance to try on different styles and sizes was a big plus for me. I opted for a very cute pair of slip ons. I was surprised that I needed a half size smaller than what I normally wear. It's a good thing the very helpful salesman was there to guide me to the correct size. My Olukai's are so comfortable and so cute! I also found a very cute pair of mother of pearl earrings! BTS is a touristy store with a bit higher quality (more expensive) touristy things. Note that I found the same shoe at a store in the same center and online for almost $5 cheaper. However, I must say that I wouldn't have known the right size to order online if I had not tried on the shoe, and if I had not had the the help from BTS salesman. read more

If I could give this store a negative star, I would. I bought my daughter a pair of Olukai ($80) slippers here, and THREE days later, both sides split, rendering the Sandals unusable. When we went back to the store, salesman Gary Keeth told us that it was company policy to NOT exchange any product, and that we would have to contact Olukai to have the Sandals exchanged. When I explained to him that we only bought the sandals a few days ago, he got very upset and told me that when I bought the shoes, he stated that anything that happens to the shoes has to be handled with the manufacturer. I explained to him that I thought he meant, anything down the road - Not immediately. (He also went on to say that this happens a lot with the sandals as they can't handle the heat.). I asked him why we couldn't exchange the shoes and have the store ship the product back to the manufacturer. He then told me that it wasn't store policy and if he were to do that for me, he would be afraid for his job. Another lady was in the store, and asked him why he just didn't contact the manager and ask her if it was OK to do so. He refused and said if he did that he would be fired, as it was her day off. And if I really wanted to speak to the manager, I could come back when she was working as he wasn't going to help me. He was yelling at me at this point and wouldn't let me speak. Bottom line is, my daughter now has to wait until we get home before she can use her slippers and we can exchange them ourselves. Gary Keeth is a joke and should not be allowed to work here any longer. He's been giving the same sales pitch on how his lady friend bought him Olukais and it changed his life, for too many years now. You can really tell from the moment you walk in that this place is targeted at the tourists who are coming through and staying at the resorts nearby. Everything they sell is some kind of beach ware-- hence the name-- but it doesn't strike me as the type of things a local would buy. They have a wide variety of shirts, flip flops, island dresses, etc. that would be perfect for a luau or day at the beach. Most of it seemed casual, though my wife was looking at some dresses that could also be for a semi-formal occasion. We didn't end up buying anything since we didn't have many days left in Hawaii, but if you came to Hawaii unprepared and needed to shift your wardrobe, this wouldn't be a bad place to stop at. read more

By the Sea has a good selection of Olukai flip flops and I had been wanting to buy a pair. No sooner did I leave the store with my new flip flops when I found that there were a few other stores in the same plaza that sold the Olukai flip flops but at a cheaper price :( I mistakenly thought that there was a standard pricing for this shoes and it appears there is (everyone else was charging the same lower price) but By the Sea charges a premium on top of it for some reason. Disappointing. They did take my return and were very pleasant about it but just be sure to price shop if you are purchasing Olukai shoes. read more

Good selection, but the old guy with the grey beard was very obnoxious and insulting to my wife reference the cheap sandals she was wearing upon entering. Very condescending trying to upsale us both with a pair of Olikai flip-flops. We almost called him out on it, but instead went to Poipu Surf up the street and purchased them there. Also, he was standing there eating a styrofoam meal in front of customers. Very tacky. Just an annoying and unprofessional guy. He'd do better by just sticking with, How ya doing? By the Sea is located close to many of the resort establishments. And much of what you will find here appeals to that crowd: Tommy Bahama, Tori Richards, Cane Bay are just some of the brands awaiting you here. They have a good stock too, and the people who work here are personable. Frankly, I love their selection of Olukai sandals for which I can always count on By the Sea to have a good variety in kind and size. My wallet is never far away when I'm here as there has never been a trip to this shop without purchasing something! Readers would be wise to do the same. read more

Discovered this place recently while on vacation. Super freindly and helpful, truly great people. We bought some Olakai shoes from them after the lady told us about them and they are awesome. We have hiked, kayaked, and played with our dogs in the river in these things and they have been indispensable. After we got back home we realized we left a bag of stuff we purchased elsewhere. I was able to send them a label and they packed it all up really really nicely and went out of their way to get the right box from the post office and sent it back to me. They were so kind and helpful and we really appreciated all their help. read more

I recently had the worst shopping experience I've ever had in Kauai. I am a local who has shopped at the store before. I bought a gift for a friend over Christmas and when he returned it they would not exchange it for him or refund him the money for the shirt. They claimed it was wrinkled and they could not resell it. Really? I spent 30 minutes debating this with them and finally walked out feeling unjust and disgust that they would do nothing about it and they would just keep the shirt. I just asked you the charge with my bank. They've lost a customer for life and anyone we know. read more
