I go BACK to Kauai 2 months later thru a series of WEIRD & RANDOM events, the universe blessed me this year, & I was back in this store w/ my mom (who wasn't on the last trip). As we walk in, I'm explaining to her the story "we bought & lost 2 necklaces from here & ended up buying duplicates on Etsy b/c I felt so bad." The lady who works there (I'm sure the owner) says "you lost 2 necklaces here 2 months ago? Hold on a second...." PULLS OUT 2 BOXES. In my head I'm like "no, no, this is not real, you're mistaken, this is someone else's box." But NO! IT WAS OUR 2 NECKLACES! Someone from downstairs found them & brought them back up to the store. They kept them for 2 months! Even though he paid cash. Most people would have taken the $100 & resold them. Free money. But this owner did not. The integrity of this store is such a rarity in this day & age. A true, honest, kind gem! They are just good people. I will always come back here when I go to Kauai. It was completely unprovoked, inappropriate, and deeply offensive. No customer should be subjected to this kind of hateful language, and it made me extremely uncomfortable. I want others to be aware of my experience before choosing to shop here. There are plenty of businesses on Kauai that treat all people with respect--unfortunately, this was not one of them during my visit.

I had frequented Blue Ginger (Kuku-Ola shopping center) every time I visited Kauai! I have several…read moredresses! However, my recent visit wasn't as usual. The customer service wasn't the same. Twice this week on two separate visits I experienced very poor customer service. The first visit found myself and only one other customer in the store. As I was browsing, the employee was chatting with another customer about her divorce, her two son. I they had biblical names. Anyway, everything was about her divorce and her sons, not once did she stop to ask if I needed help. I continued to browse, and she never approached me. Fast forward a couple days, Thursday I checked the website for hours, which indicated 9:00 a.m. I knocked on the door, the employee looked up and ignored my knock. So I called to see if they would be opening soon, no answer! Employee can still see me I knocked one more time and she looked up gestured her hand as to flipping/shooing me away! I tried to make eye contact gesturing with my hands two five (10:00) she continued to shoo me away with her hand. Honestly, all she had to do was simply tell me when they would be opening. I felt she was very rude, and unprofessional. I've spent a lot of money in their establishment, told my friends too. However, I will no longer spend my $$$$ at any Blue Ginger.

Here's the thing though, everything is piled together and you have no idea what is where, and good luck finding something in your size. Asked the young lady working, and she said not sure that we could look through the piles on one of the tables. Huh?! We still ended up with a hat, only because we knew if we didn't get it, who knows if we would even be able to find it again if we went back. This place is a mess. Also, not friendly, and they don't accept cash. So there's that.. if you have patience to dig and rifle through everything, you will probably find some good stuff. After determining they did have my size, she gave them my name and asked them to hold it for me. She then gave me the other associate's name, Madison so I'd know who was holding the shirt for me. I drove to Kapa'a, Madison encouraged me to try it on for fit. It fit perfectly and these two women were so helpful and friendly! Great service, cute shirt.

While the average tourist brings home a suitcase of dreamcatchers (most likely made in China) and moccasins (made in Minnesota), the best goods are produced by local artists. While I won't say By The Sea is a purveyor of strictly local finds, if you spend some time digging, you'll dig what you find around here. Shirts and hats are simply cooler than anything I'd seen anywhere else. I can't define cool, it just is, you'll know it when you see it. High quality products produced in America. Funny jabs and smart, proud merch. Just go. My wife got a baseball cap that looks straight outta the 80's, and I'm not ashamed to note that I remember that decade.
