Pet Partners stopped by my office today with Therapy Animal teams for employees to visit with and…read morede-stress for a few hours in the morning. Not sure if they are affiliated with Sutter Medical's Paws On-Call or if that's Lend A Heart. Their Workplace Wellbeing program brings therapy dogs and other therapy animal teams directly to workplaces to boost morale, satisfaction, and productivity. Four pairs of dogs and their humans came, all female handlers, three male dogs and one female. Didn't catch all the names and exact breeds, but I did get to visit with each of them for a little bit. The dogs' names were Lucky, Harley, Meli (which means "Honey" in Hawaiian) the Goldendoodle and Gorder (sp?). They were each super sweet and very well-behaved, and my mood improved for sure. They were happy to sit, lie down, receive pets and give licks. Such good bois and girl doggos! Wish they could stay longer, or come back soon! Dog ages ranged from around 4 to 7 years old, with some as therapy animals already for 1-5 years. The handlers were local to the greater Sacramento/Yolo area, and usually do visits at hospitals, elementary schools, etc. Some of the pairs knew each other previously and others just met at our onsite location assignment today. We had all dogs, but according to their website, Pet Partners registers "nine different species of animals for therapy visits, including dogs, cats, horses, rabbits, guinea pigs, rats, birds, miniature pigs, and llamas and alpacas." Bellevue, WA based, Yelp listed but not claimed, "Pet Partners' mission is to improve human health and well-being through human-animal bond." Think therapy animals, not just dogs, bringing healing connection to hospitals, retirement homes and schools or assistance/working animals, to help disabled humans with tasks, or provide emotional support to those with mental illness and more. Not every pet, animal, has what it takes to be a Pet Partner, my furbabies are way too diva but perhaps yours might measure up. I had a job interview coming up on Monday and no proper clothes for it. I didn't have the money to go out and buy what I needed, and I was running out of options. Director Karin was there that day, and she was incredibly kind. She was pouring coffee, checking in on people, making everyone feel welcome. It didn't feel cold or transactional -- it felt human. There was also a young guy, I believe from Ukraine or Russia, who helped me find the right clothes. He really took the time to look for something that fit well and looked professional. He didn't rush me or treat it like it was nothing -- he understood it mattered. The security guard was polite and respectful, very professional and calm. You could tell he cared about keeping the space safe but also treating everyone with dignity. And there was an gentleman handling appointments who listened to me carefully and spoke with real respect. He didn't judge, didn't rush -- he just heard me out and helped! Because of all of them, I left that Friday feeling relieved instead of anxious. I was able to spend the weekend without that heavy stress about money and clothes. On Monday, I walked into my interview looking sharp and feeling confident. I'm truly greatful for the way everyone treated me that day. You don't just give out clothes -- you give people hope and self-respect when they need it most. Thank you all so much

I've been supporting Jubilee Women's Center (JWC) since the late 90's. I always have them first in…read moremy mind when it comes to supporting & donating to a domestic violence program. I want there to be a place for women to feel safe & supported. In recent years, i've had people I know come through JWC needing refuge from some really tough situations. With the diversity in this city I was certain the JWC is providing as they describe a 12 key holistic program to help them overcome what they've been through. JWC has no services for these women! None, there's no support groups, no resume or job help, no education for dealing with their pasts/trauma's, NOTHING & to add to it there is no staff of color and over half their residents are of color. This is absolutely not a way to have a program and services (which there's none) and not have people there that look like them. There needs to be real services offered, trauma informed staff, court system navigation and specific support programs for victims of DV. Their website has nothing that they say their offering! Only housing. More people need to know these. Women now more than ever need to feel that their situation is only temporary.

GV is different to me in that it leads service trips, like many other organizations, but unlike them, has a high rate of continuing alumni involvement. They've grown from serving a few students, to serving hundreds a year. The business, Espresso De Esperanza, routinely ships fresh batches of coffee to GV (you won't be able to buy directly from Esperanza, as they have a minimum 300 pound order requirement. But then again, maybe you're just that hyper :)). GV has pound bags of coffee available for purchase, and you can find info about this as well through their site. The final Yelp-related thing about GV is their annual auction. It takes place once a year in May, and is a great place not only to go support their work, but also to find some great steals on things you need, from gifts to vacations. Check them out!
