The food and staff were brilliant, but the whole place looks like an old condemned fish and chip shop that has had loads of rickety wooden tables and chairs stuffed in it. As an American, Byron is by far my favorite burger joint in London: their fries are perfectly skinny, they'll give me an extra pickle or two (if I ask nicely!), and the burgers are nothing fancy, just delicious. I don't need artisan buns or burgers stacked so high will fillings I can't wrap my mouth around ... Byron does away with all of this and just keeps things simple, which is why it's so (in my view) successful. I typically order the Byron cheeseburger with extra pickles (obvs) and fries. Staff are efficient and polite - I've never had a bad experience here. Quick turnover means that you don't have to wait long for a table. Highly recommended versus Five Guys just across the road. read more

So I can have a really nice burger, with a side of really lovely macaroni cheese? Where do I need to go? Came here, a little merry after a few cocktails, thinking it didn't matter too much what I was eating, so we'd chance it with a chain, but to macdonalds as nandos is to KFC, it was not! I like to hate chains, but I can't hate Byron, a good choice of burgers, including veggie options, even a good choice of chips. They do specials, and they have a burger club too. The waiter was brilliant, and we had some great banter, and ribbing me over my tipsy state, and egging me on to try the alcoholic shakes, yes, alcoholic shakes. As a full on milkshake fiend (I have to have friends and loved ones guard the second half, forcing me to control myself and not inhale the whole thing), I can vouch for the shakes (even the chocolate ones) and the booze ones are a great great way to indulge. It was a cold dark night and I craved some meat. I have also been reading about this place since what feels like new restaurant chain opening time began and thought its time to see what the fuss was about. I was impressed. I had a full on cheeseburger, loaded with jack cheese and the hand cut fries and a gingerbeer. Yes I have become that rock and roll these days. My beloved had the same cheeseburger, but because she wanted a girly version she had the skinny one which had no bun but a rather nice salad which I ate lots of too. It had a great variety of leaves that included peppery ones and ones that had little red streaks on so it didn't end up being oily green stuff. The dressing was sharp and tangy too. She did have some fries so we wouldn't end up ordering more. Or the age old thing that happens when you eat with a girl - they say they don't want chips and then they end up eating all of yours. Then the next day complain that they are putting on weight. OK before I get flame grilled alive more than the burgers, I must add that my beloved isn't one of those those ladies! The food in there is so moorish and lovely that you will find yourself reluctant to share. Burger food is about being slightly gluttonous anyway. The meat in the burgers was lean yet really flavourful and juicy. The cheese had the right melty balance with the cheese that didn't feel like you were swallowing grease nor would be likely to be sweating meat and cheese for the next week. I love burgers but I don't eat them often as I know they aren't the healthiest things on the planet but sometimes when you want to feel you are being slapped on the back by a gruff lumberjack, nothing does this better than a burger. A good one at that. The service in there was good, staff attentive but not irritating. The menu in Byron is simple but I am glad they keep it that way. I think it's important (especially where burgers are concerned) to keep it simple and to focus on making a really good base product. Every time I want a good burger my choice shall be Byron. I also loved the exposed brickwork and deliberately mismatched chairs. It had a very own industrial chic about it and food was prompt. If you haven't gone already then check it out! Not enough veggie options available I'm afraid, so I can't compliment this place on it's funky interior or its awesome fries. 'But you're a vegetarian, why would you want to eat burgers?' I hear you cry. Well actually I love a good veggie burger, and this place doesn't do them. OK it has gone for the unimaginative 'mushroom in a bap' option, but I certainly wouldn't want to pay 7 quid for a mushroom sandwich. Is it really that hard to make burger patties without meat, just in addition to the no-doubt staggeringly good meat menu? (no). Then they have no excuse not to serve them. Byron Hamburgers have come up with the nifty idea of taking over the old, not particularly special Hamburger Union restaurant and transforming it into a great place to eat. The interior is, at this stage, so under-developed that I wasn't quite sure if they haven't actually finished. Everywhere is bare brick walls, timber and "toilets upstairs" scribbled on the way in felt-tip pen. However, the kitchen is gleaming new and appears to be working well. The hamburgers themselves were great: flavoursome and fresh without being overladen. The sides (hand-cut skin on chips and onion rings) were a perfect compliment. I also went for a chocolate malt which was just the right side of thick and served as an awesome starter, accompaniment and desert. I will definitely keep coming back as long as they keep serving burgers this good. read more

This lot will be giving many of the other burger joints a run for their money. Incredible burgers done medium so still pinky in the centre - exactly as they should be. The skin on chips were just perfect and hopefully slightly healthier than the skinnies also on offer. Staff were very sussed and the Islington branch (I believe another branch is planned for Covent Garden) is wonderfully de-constructed/industrial/construction-in-progress in terms of it's decor. As I always complain about, where is the 1/2 star option, cause this would be a 3.5 'er. I gave it the push to four because, they do what they do very well. My wife and I initially decided to eat here - not knowing what food they serve - cause the exterior treatment of the building looked so cool. It's your basic burgers and fries here, but done up right. I had the Byron with the special spicy BBQ sauce (extra charge...grrr, thus 3.5 stars), thin fries, and a coke. All phases = terrific. £12.25 for the above seems neither cheap, nor expensive, so I guess they have their price point and their market pegged. I'll be back. read more

Staff are a bit hit or miss, but the burgers are juicy and actually have an actual resemblance to an actual American burger. Of course you pay through the nose for the privilege, but sometimes you just need a bloody burger. I think their fries are pretty good, but the ones at the kebab shop next door are better (if you happen to be getting your burger to go I'd get my chips there) Personally, I like the BBQ bacon burger. Mu suggestion is sauce on the side otherwise the whole thing can get a bit soggy. I hate Pizza Express, but at least the chain's gotten the food right this time even if the decor is trying a bit too had to be Dalston. Sometimes, like Joni Mitchell sang, you don't know what you've got until it's gone. And that's very much the case with a Byron burger, which disappeared rather quickly after it arrived at my table. And while I'm sure I've had better burgers, I'll be darned if I can remember them. But I do remember Byron's burger - and every meat patty between a bun since just hasn't measured up. Yes, the menu isn't exactly extensive. But this is a burger joint, not The Ivy. Frankly, I'd be a bit worried if they were pushing an inventive scallop dish as a starter. It's always a sign of confidence if you don't get a great deal of choice, and there's more than enough options with extra toppings to keep you happy. The burgers themselves are deceptively filling - a decent size yet a challenge to you when you reach the last couple of mouthfuls. Plus the meat is tender and pink in the middle and the grilling is just right. The courgette fries are also a clever and utterly delicious addition to a meal and much more moreish than the standard fries. You'll be plotting how to make them at home, and failing. And this is without mentioning the huge onion rings. A few criticisms: they forget the extra bacon in my friend's burger, but the staff were very quick, friendly helpful and apologetic and fixed this quickly. Plus I'm not entirely sure if I'm keen on the 'half-renovated-before-the-builders-took-an-extended-tea-break' is quite my thing. But there's no arguing with the quality of burgers, the speed of service, the friendly staff and the price. Maybe I'll find a better burger in London over the coming months, but it'll have to go a long way to top Byron. read more

Visiting from the land overflowing with burgers and fries, I have what you call... a refined burger palate. Well, at least I try. I went to Byron today for dinner since it was across the street from my hotel and I was craving a good ole' burger. I have to say... it wasn't bad, but it still have some ways to go. The place was packed from corner to corner. After waiting a few minutes, I was seated on a small wooden table. I ordered the Byron lager (comes in a can), olives, Byron burger, and a side of onion rings. The beer was eh, the olives were pretty good, and the onion rings were above average (good seasoning and nice clean break when you bite into it). The Byron burger, the star attraction, looked better than it tasted. The cheddar cheese was perfected melted, the buns well toasted and soft, and the veggies fresh. My only gripe is with the meat and sauce. The meat (they claim is ground fresh every day) was very tough and chewy... even though it was cooked medium rare. I didn't think it was seasoned very well, if at all... and tasted very bland. The 'byron sauce' was also nothing special. It looked like runny watered-down thousand island dressing. It didn't taste special either. For those reasons, I had to give this place just three stars. The corner In-N-Out, The Habit, Umami, or Five Guys burger in Cali puts this place to shame... and those are all chains. Sorry Byron... good try, but not quite there. read more

i came here really late last night as it was one of the only things around that was open. i don't eat burgers, but i do love a veg burger. unfortunately the one here was a portobello mushroom burger rather than a veg patty, so i opted for a feta and squash salad instead. my friend got the welsh rarebit after much convincing, b/c she had never had one before. the waiter told her it was really good, so she was persuaded. we also got the fried courgettes to share. we waited about 15 minutes while everyone around us got their food. they must have been roasting the squash right then and there. when our food arrived, they brought her a hamburger instead, but she was too hungry by then that she ate it anyway. my salad was like 5 pcs of squash w/ a lot of feta on a bed of greens, undressed. i proceeded to pour the dressing over my salad only to find out it was just olive oil. how hard is it to find a good salad in this country? it certainly wasn't worth the 8.50 gbp. read more

This is a great burger joint, proper meat, friendly service, they haven't kept us waiting even when busy. I prefer the classic beef burger and the goats cheese/mushroom vegetarian options, but there are plenty to choose from with star burgers of the month for you die hards out there. Well Jimmy H best not go for rare. I tend to go for a medium rare and one time, it tasted a tad cold in the middle(!) they whisked it away, apologised and more than made up for it, I didn't need to complain nor experience any adverse effects. The kids meal deals are a steal with properly churned ice cream on a par with Marshfield Farm. Love the distressed look of the burger joint and always leave happy. Bon Burgertite! read more

Dropped in for a snack: bacon cheese fries and a vanilla shake. The shake came out very quickly in its silver mixing cup. It was a large portion and very thick and flavorful. The fries came out a little later, served in a small mug-like pot with squirty cheese and bits of bacon on top. I would have liked more of each on the fries, but it was fine. Thank goodness Byron has opened up in Islington - finally a proper, tasty burger in the area! Used to go to The Diner but was always a bit disappointed with them - now I will be at Byron instead, having a juicy, cooked-to-order burger with some amazing courgette fries. This place rocks, even if the decor is a bit too unfinished for my taste (the ceiling joists are exposed, making it look like you're eating in a building site). Our party of 6 was seated quickly and service was friendly (perhaps even overly friendly for England?) Jugs of tap water get them even more bonus points. Hmm let's start with the good shall we 1) Although my burger was slightly past medium it was still juicy 2) The Oreo milkshakes were the perfect consistency, not so thick that you couldn't get it through a straw not so cold it gave you brain freeze. I didn't order this because it sounded like a saltfest (bacon and capers in the sauce) but in retrospect that's exactly what my burger need. More seasoning and more sauce. My cheesburger just tasted of meat, tomato and lettuce as the mature cheddar wasn't bring much to the party and in a country where tomatoes taste of water that's not enough. I ended up throwing on all the condiments on the table (mustard, chili sauce, ketchup) in a desperate bid to make it taste of something 2) The courgette fries. These got slightly too greasy halfway through the bowl. I felt a bit sick after eating these. Stick to regular. So where would I put Byron in the league table of chain burger places? Visiting from the States, back in August 2013. Unfortunately I cannot recall of the details of the visit, however, I know that I really enjoyed this place. I was staying at the Hilton which is across the street. I was dead set on not having a burger while in London but I'm glad I did! In area that really appeals to everyone's palette, Byron is perfect if you want an American style burger. I like my hamburger medium and It was received more more medium rare...it was not that big of a deal for me so I didn't feel the need to send it back. Fries and dessert were both really good as well. If you are in the Angel area and you want a great burger this place won't disappoint. Service was great also! read more

Without doubt the best burger one can buy. I love a burger but I'm quite often disappointed with what turns up. most of the chains offer up some dry excuse in a manky bun but this place has it spot on. They do come a bit rarer than one might be used to but you are warned when you order. I'm glad it came as offered as it was a great burger. Try the lemonade too it has a great kick. In addition the staff are really very good too; friendly, helpful, efficient and all pretty cool without trying too hard. I haven't been to any others in this chain so I don't know if it's uniform but the I really liked the decor in this Islington branch. Real bare bones stuff. It actually looks like it's just been stripped in readiness for a refurbishment but it works well and the internal architecture of the building lends it a whole load of character. I liked it. The fries were average, but the burger itself was amazing. The bun was soft. while the meat was high-quality. I know there are a lot of hamburger chains in London but this one is number one! Firstly it's near home so I save time taking away while going out or on my way back. Secondly the veggie burger here is the best veggie I've eaten. I'm not vegetarian, so hamburger without meat is just as salad with bread so usually after I tried it I don't purchase it again. But this one is different. I don't know why maybe it's the goat cheese or the red pepper but I like it a lot. Not as much as the double one but pretty close. read more
