If you're looking for a high end steakhouse look no further. I first came here 7 years ago on a trip to London and have dined here several times since. Service was quick and personal, the atmosphere was great and we had some amazing food again. My filet was spectacular and thats comparing to many top steakhouses in the US and Australia. My only negative comment is the cost. Compared to similar steakhouses overseas its more expensive. Despite that I'll be back next time I'm in London. read more

This is a beautiful restaurant, very classy with elegant lighting and a very old school vibe. Waiters in white coats bustling food deliverers, etc. The service and attention to detail were impeccable. My partner and I visited on New Years Eve. I'm not sure if this is always the case, but the music playing was primarily American rock - like The Eagles, Neil Young, etc. It's fine, but not very in line with the classic, upscale feel. The bartending staff was top notch. I had a martini and my partner had a house Manhattan, both were perfect. We shared the iceberg wedge to start, a personal favorite, and this one was spot on. Great bleu cheese dressing, still warm lardons, and crispy, fresh iceberg lettuce. For mains, I ordered the aged Irish ribeye and chose to have it "gorgonzola encrusted". This was the first misstep. First of all, the grass fed beef stands on its own, I would never choose to add a sauce, but this was encrusted, right? Not so much. Here's the definition of encrusted from the Oxford dictionary: "Covered or decorated with a HARD surface layer". What I received was a steak smothered in (a very lovely) gorgonzola SAUCE with some bacon and spring onions. Had I known it was a sauce, I would have skipped it, or at the very least had it served on the side. Slightly disappointing, but the steak was perfectly medium rare and delicious. My partner ordered the hake. It was served with a prawn and a very tasty tarragon pesto. She said the pesto was the star. The fish was delicate and also well prepared. We shared sauteed spinach and roasted mushrooms, both delicious. For dessert we shared the banana and toffee mousse. This was the second misstep. This was a tasty dessert, but it was definitely not mousse. It was a very small sliver of banana bread (?). It had strong banana flavor and was served with rum raisin ice cream which was nice. Not bad at all. Smith and Wollensky makes a good first impression on the way in the door with its classic steakhouse interior and continues the quality vibes all throughout the meal. The space is already a star. It feels true to the form of classic American steakhouse with beautiful old boy's club woodwork throughout and gorgeous lamps adding a bit of subtle flair throughout. It feels right in here and so you'll be hoping that the food delivers as well. And it does. We tried the irish ribeye and the filet, both of which were very tasty, cooked to perfect, and appeared to have a bit of buttery flavor to them. The ribeye, while well-marbled, wasn't 50% fat like you get at some steakhouses and instead was a generous portion of delicious meat. The filet was also quite good although as a certified steak snob I'm afraid no filet can ever compete with the mighty ribeye and that was the case here as well. Sides were really tasty, especially the onion rings. Service was wonderful and they suggested a couple of great wines to go with the meal. All in all, great. Came here with a group of 10 coworkers and had a great time. The waiter was very patient in explaining the menu to us, the wine was great and the food was fantastic. We started with the shrimp cocktail, burrata, and tuna tartare and they were amazing. We got a couple of different steaks to try and they were all cooked to the perfect medium rare. Make sure you get the sauce and some sides to go with your main! Our party had such a great time that we didnt realize we had stayed past almost an hour after their closing time. Reality 3.5 -- It was fun to experience S&W in London. We are regulars in NYC, so I just knew it would be a hoot to swing by. We got a reservation for 3 at 20:00 on Sunday. The charm of it compared to NYC, just isn't there! But semi-expected. The service was good, but the biggest issues were the weird closing time. They took us at 8, but then told us the kitchen was closing and we needed to rush our order. (Why take our reservation?) There were some items we couldn't order because the kitchen was closing. The dirty martinis were good-- they have these stuffed blue cheese olives that are lovely. If you're expecting American portions-- lol you're not gonna get it. But the steaks were really lovely. I would say even better quality than NYC. It was around 8:45 when our waiter was like, hey the bar is closing. Lmao. I mean, I know it's the UK but last call this early? It was very very weird. I'm still confused on why they took our reservation. I would swing by again earlier in the day, because it is fun and tasty. I came here to celebrate my birthday and it did not disappoint. I was aware of the restaurant from NYC & was very excited to discover a restaurant had opened in London! All the staff were very friendly and attentive. My friend and I started with a glass of prosecco and decided to go straight to mains but load up on side dishes. I ordered the filet steak and my friend had the beef wellington. I ordered garlic butter as opposed to a sauce and it was perfect, the steak had lots of flavour and was tender. I asked for it to be cooked medium, but I felt it was slightly overcooked for medium. The beef wellington was quite a large portion and my friend was really full afterwards. For sides we went for mushrooms, fries and truffle mac and cheese. The sides were delicious! We were certainly sufficiently full when we had got through all that food. While we were waiting for our food to go down, I got up to take a few photos as the restaurant wasn't too busy and one of the waiters was kind enough to give me a tour of the restaurant, there is a whole other level of tables and a bar on the lower level as well as a few private dining rooms. It was really cool to have a tour! The waiter said the kitchen was a bit busy at that time to show me around but next time they would be happy to! After my tour, my friend and I ordered New York Cheesecake to share for dessert and it was so good that my friend ordered her own portion as she wanted more! It had a strawberry sauce on it which was so good!! Overall, we had an amazing experience. Service was excellent, food was delicious and I would happily go back again and again. This was an unexpected surprise. I bought a voucher through Timeout which got us a chateaubriand to share, 4 sides and a glass of prosecco each for £45. The deal was pretty good so I assumed the food and/or service wouldn't be up to much but BOY was I wrong. The service was 5* from the get go. The voucher stipulated that you must book at table before 6.30 however they had no issue with letting me book at 7pm table. When we arrived we were shown to our seats by a friendly waiter who brought us water and both the wine and food menu, offering to take us through the options available through the deal and the extra's we could add from the a la carte. The prosecco which we were given was tasty and we were able to enjoy while we chose which sides to get from their menu. We also asked to swap 2 classic sides for 1 jazzier side (prices worked out the same) which was no problem at all. Normally I would always get chips and a salad with steak however they only serve american fries which I am not a huge fan of. In the end we chose garlic mushrooms, whipped potato and also the truffle mac n cheese. We were brought warm crusty bread to nibble on while we waited for our mains and were also given the opportunity to try a few different wines so we could pick the red to go with our steak.. The bottles are pretty expensive so we both chose a glass of red each - one at £16!!! And the other at £6. I have to say the £16 glass was beautiful but the £6 was also good. The steak was brought on a trolley to the table along with the sides and 2 sauces (peppercorn and bearnaise). The steak is sliced for you and then plated up which makes for a bit of a theatrics. The steak was cooked to perfection - so tender and the sauces were the best I have had at a restaurant - actually adding something to the steak rather than a sickly sweet sauce hiding a bad steak. We really lucked out on our sides. The whipped potato was SO good and the mushrooms were plenty garlicy. The slight let down was the mac n cheese which I personally didn't think was cheesy or truffly enough. I saw salad and chips go past which I didn't think looked very good but I could be wrong! We were so full we couldn't have dreamed of ordering dessert however I must say nothing grabbed my attention as the puddings were fairly standard american diner style. Overall we had the loveliest meal with amazing service and great food in a tastefully decorated restaurant. In total we paid £90 (another £45 on top of the original deal), which made for a pricey Wednesday night meal (the only reason they get 4*) but it was SO worth it. We have been to quite a few other steak houses in the same category as the Smith & Wollensky in London before, but this was the best amonst all of them. We went there on New Year's Eve without a reservation after the restaurant we initially booked 2 months in advance was unexpectedly closed without cancelling our reservation. So, we called S&W at 8 pm, the guy said they are fully booked, but we shall come anyways, so we went there and they prepared one of the bar tables for us. The bar table looked like all the other tables and we were just sitting a bit elevated, which was not problem at all. This creativity of the staff in problem solving was great and literally saved the evening for us. Overall, the service was excellent and the staff was very friendly, despite a full house that evening. Especially the waiter we had was very, very friendly and attentive. The food was excellent, too. We both had a tartar as starter and USDA fillet, medium and medium-rare cooked, with a few sides (French fries, whipped potatoes, creamy spinach and peppercorn sauce) as main. The steaks were cooked to the point and very tender - I would count it in the TOP 5 steaks I had in Europe. The selection of gins and wines was good, but not impressive. Concluding, S&W saved our evening. The service and food were excellent. It is not cheap place to eat, but the prices are appropriate for the quality of the food and the overall experience. We highly recommend this place and will definitely come back again when visiting London. read more

Been a while since our small group had been together and a Birthday celebration was in order. I'd been to the S&W in Boston (We call it "The Castle) but this time we didn't feel like going in town so the Wellesley location seemed perfect. Reservation was made requesting an isolated spot for our party of 6 and a window location was suggested and accepted. Two things occurred before we were seated. First, our reservation was for 5:45pm. The area requires meter parking up until 6pm on Saturdays and the Hostess mentioned they were strict and we should pay the meter for parking. No one had an app to pay so we needed change. The Hostess directed one of our party to the very crowded bar area to request change from the bartender. Small thing but given the situation the Hostess should have offered to get the change. The Host & Hostess were just a little too busy to take care of the details. Next we were informed they could not accommodate our original reservation for an isolated table due to a large party and we were seated at a table in an area far from the isolated area we had requested. Strike two. Our server was clearly a veteran at his craft but the general feeling was that he was a bit over stretched. The small details for an establishment of this caliber were missing. So essentially they have raised prices dramatically but neglected the follow through that you/we have come to expect. We had ordered fresh oysters as an appetizer with one of our party requesting 1/2 dozen for herself. The oysters were served on a big platter of 12. Another small detail. I had ordered a gin martini with extra olives. The olives arrived 15 minutes after the drink. Both items were outstanding, oysters nice & fresh and the martini was perfect. One steak arrived cold (but was not mentioned). Another arrived under cooked which they promptly fixed to satisfaction. Finally, before dessert was ordered the table was cleared and folks requested items and remaining meals to be taken hope. Everything was wrapped up and placed in the same big bag. We had to request additional bags so individuals could bring their food home. Additional bags were brought but were the wrong size. We had to request bigger bags. We had ordered coffee and desserts but were not charged for these. All in all the food was good but again the details that typically separate this establishment from others just were not there. And for a place that charges almost $90 for a typical steak this is what customers expect. With much competition in the Boston area, I have to say S&W will not be one of our first choices in the future. read more

We were visiting London and the six of us really wanted a good steak dinner. Little did we know that one block around the corner from our rental was this fantastic restaurant. We were happy to get a reservation and were delighted to find every bit of this dinner was terrific. The service was the best. Drinks were great and the food was fantastic. I had steak and it was tender and perfectly cooked. We were most impressed by our waiter, Goncalo Carvalho. He took some time from his busy job to tell us how he ended up working there. A great story. I cannot recommend this restaurant enough. It is beautiful inside and on a street that is not very busy and possibly helping us get in to eat there. Smith & Wollensky cooks exceptionally good steaks in a beautiful restaurant with great service and a good wine list. Smith & Wollensky off The Strand, just a short walk from Charing Cross station, is a stunning new steak restaurant, opened in 2015. It feels like a grand, classy place with big windows and a few mirrors which probably make it look bigger than it actually is. The music is nice and contributes to the good atmosphere at Smith & Wollensky. Service was excellent from the second I walked in. My waiter was great and I had a fiendly and interersting little conversation about wine and London restaurants with the sommelier from Portugal. I started the evening with a delicious Austrian Grüner Veltliner from 2013 produced by winemaker Ebner-Ebenauer. I think this was probably my favourite wine of the entire evening. After the Grüner Veltliner, I ordered a 2014 Picpoul de Pinet, Château de Pinet La Comtesse, from Languedoc in France. It was a good, smooth wine, but it did not have the interesting, lemony edginess and high acidity of the Grüner Veltliner. When talking about the different wines, I also got a taster of the 2014 "Southern Right" Sauvignon Blanc from Walker bay in South Africa. I thought it was nothing special, really. My final white wine was an American Risling, a 2013 Grace Lane from Yakima Valley in Washington State. A decent wine with the typical mineral notes and oily feel that makes a great Riesling. Unfortunately, it was a bit too sweet for me, maybe a bit like German Spätlese wines. Of course, I could not drink all those wines without any food. So I started with some bread. It was not outstanding, but a good start. I came with the idea to try their USDA steaks. But because the USDA cuts were only quite big portions, I settled instead for a Scottish beef fillet "au poivre". In short, that steak was a dream. The pepper crust added a beautiful spiciness that actually enhanced the flavour of the meat. The steak was medium-rare, perfectly pink, with a slightly buttery texture, it melted in the mouth. Truly, one of the beat steaks you can get in London. The peppercorn sauce was also full of flavour. Often I am a bit disappointed when I cannot find peppercorns in the sauce, this time I was happy with the taste despite the notable absence of peppercorns. As side, I had selected "thrice cooked chips". Besides the somewhat stupid name, they were very crunchy and absolutely delicious. More thin fries than thick-cut chips, these were just exactly how I want chips to be. I can imagine that some people might even fine them too crispy. As usual, I had most of the sauce with the chips, not the steak. And the peppercorn sauce went beautifully with the chips. I also tried the ketchup, which was alright. The mayo looked fresh and tasted great as well. For dessert I had the apple tart. On the menu, it sounded like a tasty dish. The puff pastry was a solid foundation and it came together nicely with the juicy apple. The vanilla ice cream was a good addition, but I would not have needed the salted caramel sauce at all. In fact, I think the dish would be better altogether without the salted caramel sauce. That aside, the pastry and the apple made a brilliant dessert. When I was about to wrap up my dinner, a friend decided spontaneously to meet me at the restaurant, so I ordered a cheese board and started looking at the red wines. The sommelier recommended a kind of strong, somewhat fruity and tasty Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot blend, the Viñas del Vero from Somontano in Spain. Then we moved on to a lighter red, the 2013 Pinot Noir Monterey Wine Co. Poppy frim Monterey in California. Another good recommendation by the sommelier. Altogether, I had a really good evening at Smith & Wollensky. The food was top-notch, the service was brilliant and I had an interesting conversation with the staff. read more

London - Five stars. One of if not the best steak house in London and Ireland. Excellent USDA steaks and Irish meats available. The USDA steaks have a better flavor and more marbling. The Irish steaks have an earthy flavor and a very dense texture. Both very tasty but most steak lovers will prefer the USDA steaks more. All of their sides are excellent. For dessert we had their decadence chocolate cake. This cake is aimed to impress. A multilayered cake so tall it could feed 6 people. A must if you want to impress. We went to try out their new brunch. The food and service were very good, we had the waffle, the pancakes, the French toast and the poached eggs and hash. Everything was prepared very well and tasted lovely. I tried their "danger danger" Bloody Mary which certainly lived up to the reputation for heat. I actually felt that the spice took away a bit from the flavour of the drink and was "hot for the sake of being hot" if that makes sense. Lovely decor, the downstairs bar looks like a great place for a party and the wine list was very impressive. Will be back for dinner. read more

Came here with a friend off the back of some sort of voucher - think it was through Time Out. It was a really good deal, which made me somewhat suspicious that it would be a place that might feel a bit cheap or lack atmosphere. I was pleasantly surprised, therefore, at the sophisticated, art deco interior. We started off at the bar, where I had one of the best martinis I've had (I like them filthy). The man at the bar was friendly without being intrusive. We then had a simply massive tomahawk steak (1kg shared between the two of us), which was beautifully rare and marbled with fat. This was accompanied by some excellent whipped potatoes and average chips. My only real criticism would be that the sides could be more varied - simply because I am quite fussy about veg, so the only real options were potato-based. Similarly, I would have liked a sauce for the steak, like bearnaise or blue cheese. However, I'll certainly be back, especially if I can find another deal! read more

This is the first and only Smith & Wollensky in the UK, but after years of dabbling with the idea of a London restaurant have they left it too late though? The likes of Goodman, MASH and Hawksmoor have established themselves as THE premier steak restaurants this side of the pond, so is there need for another high-end competitor. After tonight, I'd say yes. Why? Because my steak was superb - and I mean superb. That bone-in ribeye was cooked to perfection and didn't need to be returned which has happened on far too many recent occasions at my other favourite steak restaurants. It was big too. In fact, it was delicious; probably the best steak I've had in a couple of years (and I've eaten a lot of steak in that time!). The only disappointment was the sides. The truffled mac & cheese was too greasy while the fries I ordered were on the soggy side. The phenomenal steak somehow made up for those deficiencies. I would expect better sides next time though. So, yes, after a degree of skepticism I will be going back. And hopefully another heavyweight to the London steak scene will its competitors to up their game again. read more

This is when New York meets London at its best. The original restaurant is in NYC but you can have the whole steak experience in Charring cross. The ambience is like a classic American steak house with dim lit lights and comfy round tables with sofas to sit on. The staff were very friendly with one very pumped up Philipino guy who was so eager to clean up the table! Lol I went for the Tomahawk steak and lobster menu which was for two people but I swear it's for four. It's great value £36 for the course including a glass of prosecco and two sides. The lobster came with a lovely hot butter sauce and the steak was absolutely huge with a thick bone attached. I chose the seasonal vegetable and trice cooked chips for the sides. For desserts, if you have a large group I would recommend to get the 'Gigantic chocolate cake' which is a massive slice of chocolate cake. Smollensky's on the Strand made me think of S&W (only because of the name!) and was pleasantly surprised to see this place on the way back from the gym. I have to say I was impressed with the decor - it did remind me a bit of S&W but it had a bit of English charm into it as well. Definitely a good place for a business lunch. They had a set lunch menu but opted for the a la carte menu. Interesting how they offer imported USDA beef! Cuts are so big and would only get it if you were planning to share. I ordered the Wollensky salad with sliced tenderloin. It was so good and really filling without it making you fall asleep after lunch. Perfect with a side of bread to go along with it. We visited as guests of the head chef which was an offer to good to refuse. The restaurant has been tastefully decorated to give it a 1930's feel which compliments the the Adelphi building very well. As with any restaurant good service is important and the staff here have this down to a fine art. Friendly and attentive they make the whole eating experience a pleasure they offer outstanding personal service which to be fair I expected but as we all know sometimes expectations fall very short! Now the most important part the food which was excellent, obviously being a steakhouse (although there are other excellent choices on the menu) we chose the ribeye steak,buttermilk onion rings,hashed brown potatoes and creamed spinach and for desert the coconut cake. The steak was cooked to perfection,the onion rings had a lovely crispy batter and the creamed spinach and hashed brown potatoes were as equally lovely. I've been to the New York venue many times and was pleased to discover the London restaurant near the strand in the West end theater district. It's a classy splurge and well worth it. It's the only place I will eat steaks in the UK (they know what medium rare means)! Gorgeous decor and ambiance, impeccable service and top notch steaks! Was in London working and wasn't sure really where I fancied for dinner - had been considering popping here for a while, and as I was in walking distance I thought I'd try it out. Visited on a Wednesday night around 8pm. It wasn't that busy, could probably have gotten a table but decided to sit at the bar. To drink I had a glass of the Zinf they have. Can't remember the name but it was very drinkable. To eat, I had the Irish Rib Eye (400g but to be honest it didn't feel it!) with whipped potatoes and creamed spinach. Was really nice. Decided to finish off with a bullet old fashioned (of old timer as they call it). I particularly like old fashions and I wasn't disappointed ! Wouldn't say it reminded me of the NYC original at all. After spotting this restaurant on Yelp we decided to head over to S&W tempted by steak and cocktails.... And we certainly weren't disappointed! Our starter, the squid was served quickly & presented delightfully. The steak was huge & perfectly cooked. I settled on the Tuna steak which was delicious, perfectly seared. My Boyfriend (American) had eaten in an S&W back home & highly recommended the Iceberg Wedge..... Yummy! We had the blue cheese dressing and honestly it was one of the best I've tasted. I had saved up two days of our business expense budget to enjoy a nice end of trip meal. I was disappointed. I had the XMAS menu which included the bone-in rib eye and sides. The meat was properly cooked but the meat itself was not what I would expect at a high end steakhouse. Alexander's in San Francisco, Peter Luger's and say Morton's in SF was what I was expecting. It was the quality of the meat that I think did it. They grill the meat and dont' use a pan so you can't get a crust on one side. To the waiter, I had recommended "Steak Revolution" on Netflix to look at some other meat purveyors, techniques and approaches. This place is due for some culinary disruption. I thought this place was very good. T-bone was well prepared and tasted like the kind of steak you would get at a fine American steakhouse. Service was good but not stellar. Overall, a good experience. Price was not cheap but comparable to upper end USA steakhouse. Salad was very good - sides fine, deserts was also good. I would recommend. read more
