Dr Heckman is exceptional. She is very thorough and explains things in a way that is understandable. Highly recommend.

Poor communication. Unnecessarily difficult. Unprofessional. Complete waste of time…read more A page on their website (i.e. "Location, Hours and Contact") has a link to a site for ostensibly scheduling an appointment (i.e "Contact us now to schedule your appointment"). So, I did. Except, contrary to appearances, that doesn't actually schedule an appointment. Somebody from the office called a few days later to say they didn't actually have an available appointment. If the "Schedule and Appointment" site is not actually for that purpose, then be explicit about that. I got an exam elsewhere and then gave Kessler Optical a second chance because they supposedly carry a line of frames in which I was interested. I walked into the business during their stated hours of operation, only to be told they don't accept walk-ins. If that's their policy, then they should state that on their website. I should add that the woman at the front desk was unapologetic about any of this and unnecessarily difficult. If a business repeatedly fails to communicate clearly and inconveniences a customer as a result, then the business should acknowledge that and, ideally, try to make amends. Kessler Optical did none of that. I had limited time and needed to place an order for new glasses quickly before traveling for the holidays. Kessler Optical was a waste of precious time.

I love going to Kessler Optical. First and foremost, I like to support local businesses. Dr…read more Kessler and his wife run the place with wonderful staff members, from reception--to the medical assistant before your exam--to fittings, and it's as friendly of an atmosphere as you can have when you're dealing with a medical appointment and subsequent fittings for eyewear. They have a beautiful selection of eyewear from different designers. The staff will spend as much time as it takes to get the right fit and the right look and tell you how to properly care for your glasses. You can walk in to get your frames adjusted or get your glasses cleaner refilled for free anytime. They really care about their patients and it shows in all of their interactions. The eye exam is comprehensive and Dr. Kessler is knowledgeable and kind. He takes his time and your exam is not rushed. I will continue to give them my business.

I asked for gray lenses with a salesperson, but got green-ish lenses when I picked it up another day. A different lady named Cassandra who claimed to be the manager was there. Cassandra first tried to gaslight me into believing the green lenses are the gray ones that I asked for. I took out my original gray color lenses and showed her that it's not the same color. I nicely asked her if it's OK that they replace the lenses to the color that I wanted. She suddenly talked to me rudely. Her original word was: "I can change it for you, but I don't want to. Because no matter what color we give you, you won't be satisfied. You will just come back and ask for new colors again and again." Her bad attitude was out of nowhere. Then I explained the situation last week with the different salesperson. I asked for exactly the same color as my original lenses but with prescription. She kept repeating her passive aggressive words implying that I chose the green color myself, and was then unsatisfied and asking for change, implying that I was a dishonest customer. Cassandra then started gaslighting me by "I was there the whole time when you were working with Tony, I was sitting right next to you. I saw him showing all the lenses to you and you chose the green color." I knew it was not true, because only Tony was there when I went there last week. So I explained that "You were not there. You must have mistaken me of someone else." She started increasing her voice and be like: "No, I was sitting right next to you the whole time. IT IS YOU." I proposed looking at the camera and see if she was there. She started saying "ugh, dramatic." I got mad and asked her: "Were you calling me dramatic??" She replied: "No, I am not talking about you." I pointed out that LensCrafters has the 30 days guaranteed satisfaction, she simply replied rudely: "Yes, but you will never be satisfied. You will just come back and change colors again and again." At that point I was really mad but still trying to explain. She almost shouted: "YOU DO NOT INCREASE YOUR VOICE!!! YOU DO NOT! INCREASE YOUR VOICE" I said: "I can come back tomorrow and work with the salesperson that I talked to, but I think your attitude towards the customers should be better." She rudely replied: "You are the one increasing your voice and calling me a liar. I have been professional and nice all this time." Then she just started to file documents for other customers and ignore me. The experience with Cassandra was SO HORRIBLE. Her service was so unprofessional and rude, full of gaslighting, passive-aggressiveness, discrimination, and microaggression. She did not even listen to my when I explained. I eventually left the store feeling discriminated as an Asian customer and being accused to be a dramatic and dishonest customer.

Hustled through the exam, then sat at a desk with a lady who I'm sure is very sweet that didn't want to be there on a Saturday, so I just asked for a printout of my Rx, and had to wait for the doctor to go back to my record to close it (but he was already with another patient) so she could print it. I don't have a back up pair, which made it difficult to resolve the issue, as they couldn't be sent back. But they would have been the exact same quality, even if I could: scratch SUPER easily & the lenses are just wonky. It is difficult to put into words, but I just don't see well from them. They never seem to come clean, and there are weird markings in the lenses. The coating is cheap. And the glasses were $450 even with insurance. The nice staff isn't enough to get me back there with this quality. It has changed in the last few years, even though they claim it hasn't. Giving two stars for the quality of product, not the staff.

I came by last week. I've been going to the America's Best in West County in St. Louis for as long…read moreas I can remember so, I was happy to see them open a location in Champaign. The appointment was friendly and quick but when it came time to pick out glasses, one of the employees was one of those "overly helpful" types. I'm the kind of person that likes to be left alone to think about what I'm going to buy. If I have questions, I don't mind asking someone for help. This guy must have come up to me every five or ten minutes to ask if I had questions. Sometimes it was helpful, a lot of times, I felt like he was pressuring me to make a decision. In the end, I will say that the glasses are not much cheaper than other more expensive places. I ended up paying $400 for two pairs of glasses which is pretty comparable to an "expensive" place like lens crafters and at least there you can have your glasses ready the same day! Sure, they advertise the two pair for $69 deal but it only applies to certain glasses and the really "helpful" employee was not so helpful when it came to helping me find the best deal. He kept making comments about the more expensive frames being more durable. They must get paid on commission or something. Also, the price doesn't include lenses and I'm not sure how much that costs, my lenses are pretty basic, no astigmatism or anything.....so I'm not sure how it ended up costing so much but in the end, I was sick of being there and just wanted to leave with a decision. I figured $200/per pair of glasses isn't too bad after all.... I also bought contacts. They say the prices start at $13.99/box but they're more like $20 a box unless you pay $99 to join the Eyecare Club or buy a year supply or something. This place has lots of confusing gimmicks, just tell me the real price! UPDATE: 2 weeks later.... So, I finally picked up my glasses. I'm happy with the frames and the woman who adjusted them for me. This is the only reason why I haven't switched to online stores. Getting my frames adjusted to fit my face is important to me. The only thing I'm not happy with is my actual prescription. Its definitely different than my old one and I don't think I like it. My prescription hasn't changed in over 10 years so, I was a little surprised when she had said she changed it. Now it's harder to read things that are close up. I don't think the eye doctor did a thorough enough job double checking this.

Overall, the care at America's Best veers towards negligence. There is no longer a doctor in…read moreperson; exams are done remotely via video chat. The in-person staff adjust the equipment, and the doctor theoretically sees through a camera attached to the equipment. During my exam, I was given an inaccurate contact lens prescription. When I went back to have it redone (at my own cost), the doctor blamed me for receiving the wrong prescription. I don't know how this service model can function. The whole thing just seems like a money grab with little to no care for the health of patients' eyes. Additionally, I complained of a new floater that wasn't going away. After being dilated and examined, they told me it wasn't anything to worry about. After a significantly more thorough exam at my excellent, new, (and in-person) eye doctor at a different practice, she referred me to a specialist to check it out. As someone who can advocate for myself to receive good care, America's Best has been awful. I worry for those who aren't able to. Please do not go here. Honorable zero-star review for 2+ hour wait times on more than one occasion, and staff telling me (unprompted and unasked for) bizarre and inappropriate gossip about former employees.
