I have taken my children and grandchildren to "Range USA Mentor" to introduce them to firearms and the rules and practices of firearm safety. Proper handling and respect for firearms is the only way to assure their safety. "Range USA Mentor" has 20 climate controlled shooting lanes with a range marshall on duty at all times. It is clean, well maintained, and well lit. The retail side of the store has something for everyone. They have a wide variety of guns and ammunition to choose from to serve any purpose as well as all the cleaning and maintenance equipment you need. The people are knowledgeable and can answer all your questions. The only reasons I did not give them a 5 star rating is because they are a bit pricey and they no longer have 1/2 hour time slots on the range. You have to buy 1 hour whether you need it or not. Even so... I highly recommend them. Whether you just want to hone your skills or you want to introduce a novice to the sport, it is the place to go.

My brother suggested Civilian Defense Academy and I have been thrilled with them. In February I started with the Learn to Shoot class and absolutely loved it. They keep the classes small and only work with a few people at a time during the range portion. That was fantastic because James was right there to watch everything I was doing as I was loading and shooting the various firearms he provided for practice. He was there to answer all of my questions and offer suggestions on improving my form and accuracy. Yesterday I attended the Concealed Carry course to get my license. James and Bruce are very knowledgeable and put everyone at ease right from the beginning. They make it fun and really interesting while still being very professional and making sure to stress the importance of safety - for you and everyone around you. The idea of sitting in a 10 hour class about firearm safety, mechanics, use, ammunition, maintenance and legal responsibilities sounded a little daunting but I had a great time. They made it so interesting that it seemed to take no time at all. Even the seasoned hunters in the class said they learned a lot and everyone in the class seemed to really enjoy themselves. I would not hesitate to recommend CDA to ANYONE looking to get their Concealed Carry License or simply looking to get comfortable with using a firearm. Then I got sunburn. : ( They have a rifle range, a pistol range, skeet shooting (which I suck at), and trap shooting. It's all pretty interesting to watch if you've never been exposed to this sort of thing. I'll be honest, a few years ago I would have sneered at something like this. I was never a big fan of guns. I got over that point-of-view though after really giving it some honest thought (instead of letting my uber liberal point-of-view shine through.) Guns are kinda cool. You just need to be responsible, respectful, and learn safe handling. They will teach you all of that at the Rod 'n Gun Club. The members here get really excited when a new person shows an interest in shooting. Especially if they're young. I recently received a pistol as a gift from my dad and I needed to learn how to use it properly and how to handle it safely. I learned a whole lot at Ashtabula Rod & Gun Club. There are stations which you can reserve through the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. No reservation required though. You will need an Ohio range permit. These can he purchased online or at many retailers. You can get one any place you can get a hunting or fishing license. $5.00 for a single day pass or $24.00 for the year. I recommend the yearly pass. Plenty of free parking. You must bring your own targets. They provide backs to attach targets to an place in ground in front of back stop. If it's your first time familiarize yourself with range rules. Particularly those pertaining to cease fires. Don't forget to train often and in all kinds of weather.
