We came via Captiva Cruises so got priority seating, which was great considering the crowd on a weekend! It was NUTS. The workers were working their butts off. It was crazy busy! The menu is not huge considering the place is an island. I wish they had a kids menu. At least they had grilled cheese. Took a cruise to Cabbage Key with Captiva Cruises off of Gasparilla Island since we were staying in Port Charlotte. It was a 30 minute ride out to island. Cabbage key was bustling with multiple charters dropping groups off. The restaurant has inside and outside seating and the staff hustles to take orders and turn tables so all charters can meet their time allotment. Food was good. We had a wonderful boat ride over to this little spot for lunch on a sunny October Monday. A cooling north breeze was blowing making for a perfect weather day. While this spot was busy when we arrived (a big tour group was finishing up their lunch inside the restaurant) we had no trouble grabbing a shady outside table perfect for our group of six. Local legend has it that this spot has something to do with the famous "cheeseburger in paradise" by Jimmy Buffet although I'm sure I heard the same claim when we visited key west some years ago. Nevertheless, all six of us succumbed to the hype and got the cheeseburger with half asking for well done. We ordered some tropical drinks too-the Raspberry scented Chambord Margarita was particularly tasty. The burgers, which come with coke slaw or potato salad (no fries!!!) were just average and all were pretty well done and lacking flavor (just ok). The highlight of the trip was having a bunch of dolphins jumping and following the boat on our journey over and back. Bottom line: scenic but very average food during our visit. read more

Who knew that Florida has such a gem? I almost felt like I was in the Carribean... without all of the hype. Other than the overrated restaurant, the water tower, and a short walking trail, there isn't much to do on the island. But, to me, that was part of the joy of visiting. My husband and I decided to visit Cabbage Key in, surprisingly to us, a non-traditional way. We rented a cottage on the island and ferried our kayaks over to celebrate our 15-year wedding anniversary, paddle the mangrove islands and explore Cayo Costa State Park beaches. This island definitely caters to the day-trippers arriving on boats of all sizes. It is very busy between 11 am and 3 pm, which was a perfect time for us to be away from the island and out paddling the amazing surrounding waters. We brought some food in and not enough water. The island has well water, but it does not taste very good. The food is very pricy, we avoided breakfast and lunch at the restaurant and splurged on dinner three nights in a row. Dinner was amazing. Chef Charles was so lovely. The wait staff was fantastic. We enjoyed chatting with Thomas, Jason and Sandra; and Andrew, the bar tender, was awesome. Others were super helpful too, but we didn't get to chat with them as much. It was fascinating learning about th history of the island, which the restaurant manager, Mark, knows extensively (we bought his book in the gift shop... he even signed it for us). We had so much fun exploring the island early in the morning and later in the afternoons/evenings when it was practically empty! So many stars at night! The tortoises are hilarious and we saw tons of other wildlife including snakes, osprey, manatee and moon jellies. Cayo Costa beaches are stunning and not that challenging to paddle to. It was a really fun getaway. We would do things a little differently if we visit again, but overall is was really fantastic! read more

I am vegetarian and the only non meat item was a very small tossed salad. It was nothing out of the ordinary. My friend ordered a chicken sandwich which was OK. Nothing great. Awesome location! Only accessible by boat,Cabbage Key has some wonderful views. You can park your boat free of charge at their marina while you dine. Explore the views of the ocean and wildlife via their viewing tower. Drinks at the bar were small but good. The food selection was limited (but it is on an island). I had the Cheeseburger. So we chose to sit outside immediately in the direct sun. People arriving only 20-30 min after us were seated inside immediately. That's a big deal when the AC makes a huge difference in 92 FL heat. $250 for six us of just cheeseburgers, cokes, and two beers. A ripoff! read more

Cruising around the keys here near Sanibel area by Boca Grande, you'll find Cabbage Key. With rental cottages, a marina and restaurant, it's an excellent island to stop off at if you're in the area. There is a restaurant there that sells cabbage creepers and they are amazing! However, the margaritas leave a lot to be desired. The only water is bottled as they only have well access (I mean it's far away from the mainland so it makes sense!) But it's very reasonably priced. The food is a bit pricey but being the only only way to get to it is by boat and they are the only option out there it's expected. You can also shop the gift shop there or rent a cottage. Love stopping here after a long day fishing. My biggest gripe is that tables are for food customers only but there are ZERO signs that state this. So after ordering drinks, our waitress Paula H rudely states this. We were promptly told that we would need to leave the table once someone ordering food arrived and gave us our bill. While I don't mind the policy, I do mind the curt response and lack of this rule posted. She did try to redeem her customer service skills after, but it's to little to late. read more

Rent a boat and go get an incredibly good burger!!! There's not a ton to see and really the only attraction is the restaurant and the tortoises walking around but it's worth a stop. The dock master will direct you on where to park the boat (unless you take the ferry in) at the piers/docks. We checked out the little gift shop and I wanted several shirts. The restaurant looks small from the outside but inside there's plenty of seating. They also have some tables outside as well. We sat in the back room with all the dollar bills. They won't supply you the dollar but they will supply you with the marker and tape so make sure to bring some dollars! The drinks we ordered were yummy and the burger was awesome!!!! Potato salad was good but had a seasoning in it that gives it a unique flavor. The key lime pie is frozen so it was ok. I would have preferred fresh or at least defrosted but they are on an island and probably have limited resources. After lunch we walked to the tower and took it all in and then we took a little walk(to walk off the food and drinks) around the trail near the restaurant. Nothing super exciting but a nice casual walk before hopping back on the boat. We ran the pontoon aground when we arrived but by the time we left we were a little stuck so we luckily had someone help us push it out. Working off more of that food. But seriously-it's a fun little ride and great food and the kids will love watching all the tortoises walking around so get over there! read more

Asked for the black beans and rice with shrimp instead of chicken or fish...nope! seriously? you have 6 shrimp dishes on the menu. Kind of ruined the experience for me...lazy waitress. grouper sandwich was good, burger was small but tasty, dont waste your money on the clam chowder, its all potato with the smallest amount of clam i have ever seen. We absolutely loved, loved our experience here. The whole boating atmosphere is great, and so attractive. The restuarant is great, and has excellent food. It's pricey but the scenery makes up for it by far. The dollar wallpapered walls were a great site to see, and fun for the whole family to participate in. There is even little trails to walk around and soak up the whole experience. Everyone we encountered was super friendly and helpful. They had a little gift shop there to but I didnt buy anything. We took a boat charter from King Fisher Fleet to have lunch at the restaurant. We got there and had a two hour window to eat and get back on the boat. Now they knew we were coming to have lunch per the staff in the boat. So when we meet with the hostess it was first come basis for seating. Well there were not many open tables. Not sure why they didn't reserve a section of tables for us. We ended up getting a table which we shared with two other couples who needed to have lunch before the boat left. The first thing out of the waitresses mouth was "I can only do two credit card transactions or cash". Well like most of us we all don't carry cash. Did not set the atmosphere for a nice lunch. Next told they don't have cold glasses for the beer. She offered us can cozies. Which we agreed to but later found out we were charged $3.50 each. Food was ok. Nothing special that I can't get at a restaurant in Punta Gorda. Too much hype for something that was just ok. read more

The dock master wanted to put us on the beach and have our elderly group jump off the front of the boat. $18.50 for dry hamburger $1 to add cheese came with potato salad with way too much celery salt in it. $3.50 for a bag of chips. $3.00 for a small soda and no refills. Had to pay for water $3.00. Would not provide separate checks. If you're going to charge $20 for a burger you ought to provide some customer service like refill drinks, complimentary water and separate checks. One and done. read more

This has been a regular stop for us when boating. Always has been primarily a tourist stop so you expect high prices, average food, a hectic staff. Five of us boated in yesterday, each had a gold margarita. Drinks were very good, but served in plastic cups: price for the five drinks $90.12 plus 10 tip. We didn't eat because they were busy as usual and would have been a 2 hour wait for an over-priced average burger. The wives wanted two buy Tee shirts for gifts. Stopped into gift shop on way to boat. I asked to use rest room while ladies shopped. Was told "No". Gift shop rest rooms for overnight guests Only. I replied I had just spent $100 in bar and was preparing to spent at least another$50 in their shop. Again told, No. needless to say we didn't purchase their over priced $29.95 tee shirts and I will never again stop at this tourist trap. read more

Look. It is cool in that you take a boat and dine at an island cafe. The turtles are cool. The dollar bills on the walls are cool. But the food is awful and VERY expensive. We had 1) Stone crab - served cold with no seasoning or flavor at all. Just bland. And this cost 40 bucks. Awful and expensive. 2) Burger - over cooked, dry and over priced. 3) Shrimp salad - average at best, no seasoning, and over expensive. 4) Potato salad - Flavorless. 5) Cole slaw- It was good. And if selling you bad food at a crazy high price isn't enough they try to get you again if you order water. A couple of people in our party ordered water, expecting a glass of tap water like every other restaurant in the U.S. brings. Nope. They bring 2.50 bottles of water. When we said we wanted tap she freaked out. "You want unfiltered well water?" Um. Yes. Very rude. Because the 135 we spent for a horrible lunch wasn't enough for them I guess. The waitress did a good job. The water was brought by someone else. Go for the beauty and adventure. Skip the meal. I don't even believe this was the inspiration for Cheeseburger in Paradise.
