    Rental skates
    Connie L.

I have been taking lessons and going to public sessions here for about 6 months. I'd originally begun learning at Skate Frederick, but with my work schedule, Cabin John was more convenient so I switched over. Cabin John also has better facilities and seems to have more class offerings (including longer 45-minute classes) which was great because I was able to continue my lessons even during the busiest 4 months of the year at my office. The Olympic rink, where public sessions take place, has plenty of space and the ice is zambonied before each session. Group lessons take place on a a smaller studio rink (located just past the NHL rink), which is a lot less smooth, but is serviceable. Although I'd taken a level 1 class at Skate Frederick, I started at Teen & Adult 1 at Cabin John in order to get more comfortable. My instructor, Jessica, was nice and patient. The level 1 class goes through marching, swizzles, one-foot glides, braking, and a little bit of backward skating. I then moved onto Teen & Adult 2 with Alicia, who was also a very competent teacher. The level 2 class went through chassés, more backward skating, some circle work, and a little bit of spinning. The last class of each session involved a little final exam of sorts, where the instructor would mark the skills you were able to do and recommend which class to take next (i.e. whether you should sign up for the next level or redo the current level). The 45-minute sessions included free admission for 9 public sessions during the 6-week lesson period and free skate rentals for both the classes and the public sessions. I found the rental skates to be pretty comfortable (I preferred the brown ones because they were easier to lace tightly around the ankles), but the rental skate line tended to be very long on weekends, so definitely get there early if you have a weekend class and need to rent skates. My favorite public sessions were the Adult Skate ones, since it was nice not to worry about running into a kid, and most of the adults seemed pretty responsible on the ice. However, most of the kids at the other public sessions were very well-behaved too. All the public sessions, including early morning and weekday evening ones, were reasonably busy, although a bit less so in the spring/summer months. There's always a good number of serious figure skaters doing private lessons and/or practicing advanced moves during the public skate sessions. Lockers cost $0.50 in quarters per use, but it seems like you can leave your non-precious belongings on the benches without any problems. If you have your own skates, skate sharpening costs around $12; I was able to get mine done in about 15 minutes when I brought them in on a Sunday. The front desk accepts credit cards (but not American Express). There's free wi-fi and some of the parents seem to congregate in the café area with their laptops. The bathrooms are reasonably clean and I've never had to wait in a queue for the ladies' rooms. There's plenty of free parking, although on winter weekends when lessons and public skate sessions run simultaneously, the spots do sometimes fill up. Overall, a great place to learn and practice skating. The rink is conveniently located just off of I-270.

    great form!

Rude children with attitudes working at the skate rental counter. Other than that, this place is pretty standard.

So... 4.5-stars for the actual Rockville Ice Arena (RIA), but really the reason I feel compelled to…read morewrite a review is to warn figure skaters away from the East Coast Pro Shop inside the Arena, which deserves no stars. If you have figure skates, do NOT get your skates sharpened here, no matter how desperate you are and how much this shop claims to sharpen figure skates 'all the time.' They did such a poor job on my sharpening (which, as a beginner, I unfortunately just chalked up to me struggling with newly sharpened skates rather than a botched job) that months later the sharpener at the new shop I went to (Replay Sports - Rockville) was exasperated; going out of his way to comment on just how bad the previous sharpening was (without me even mentioning my struggles). He ended up having to shave down the whole blade to fix it. Lo-and-behold, I had 0 struggles after this sharpening. To top it off, the Pro Shop charged $24, which was not mentioned prior to them sharpening the skates. I didn't doublecheck the price since a RIA employee had already told me three days earlier it was ~$12. When I mentioned the discrepancy at checkout, they said, 'Well, these are figure skates, not hockey skates.' Huh? For reference, I just have standard Mark IV blades... Despite their shop, I can't in good faith give the RIA arena any less than 4 stars, because overall the rinks are really nice, and I've had excellent experiences with the employees and adult group lessons here. I agree with other reviewers that the weekend sessions are insanely busy and should be avoided, but that's true for really any rink in this area. Yes, their weekday public skate sessions are at inconvenient times (usually 12-2pm, MWF), but as result, these sessions are sometimes virtually empty - so depending on your work schedule, this can be a real benefit.

There were multiple groups of 5+ teens/tweens holding hands, blocking anyone from passing by them. Occasionally they would slingshot someone off of their chain of people into the rest of the ice skaters around them. There were also skaters passing by so quickly my hair was whipping in the wind as they flew by. I'm all for speed, but they kept coming so close to me I thought they were going to take me out. On top of that, there were multiple spills and children skating sideways. The workers looked like high schoolers and did not appear to be concerned by the number of people on the ice or the big groups of people linking hands. The skates were also lower quality, and they offered no half sizes. My advice is go at non-peak times and bring your own skates. If you check in on yelp when you arrive, there is a coupon for a hat or gloves.

Went here for a birthday party and brought my nieces with me. I saw a review on TikTok before I went and it actually looked way bigger, more stuff, and nicer than when you're actually there. Half the games weren't working, when taking the kids to get on rides it didn't seem like the people operating the rides cared much, as I had to make sure the girls were properly in the ride and fastened in tightly. Some of the ride seats belts and straps were broken, worn out, half way tearing. That's a huge safety hazard if the kids aren't strapped in tight, and after I secured them in there, they don't even come around to ensure they're in there right. It's like am I working here too, of course I care more about my child's safety. They have a height threshold for rides but kids under the height were still able to get on. It's just kids working there, one person working two rides. I constantly used sanitizing wipes to wipe the girl's hands because I felt it's so many germs around that place. Finally, had to take my niece to the bathroom, I asked her is she could hold it because the bathroom wasn't the cleanest, and it was only two stalls which makes no sense for a place that size with that many people. Very underwhelming and interesting fun place. Would not recommend.

The public skate sessions are two hours long for $8, and rentals are $4. Compared to the Capitals Arena in VA, it's really affordable! However, know that if you rent here, the rental skates are pretty worn down and the blades are not sharpened. If you're learning to skate, it may be a better idea to invest in your own beginner skates compared to the rental skates here so you get a real feel of skating and have more safety and security from getting a sprained ankle. It's usually crowded on weekends, especially with kids birthday parties and lessons so expect little kids zooming past you. I went on a random weekend in December 2022 and it wasn't too crazy compared to a different weekend in March 2022. Could be because people have more plans during the holiday season, who knows? tldr; affordable ice rink, but don't rent skates from here. can get crowded, but you also can get lucky. Parking is decent, but again can get crowded. Come early during public skate sessions to give yourself time to tie your skates on tight!
