Five stars for honesty and offer of suggestion. We had cabinets that were built 20 years ago. The face are solid wood, but the sides are wood veneer which is coming away from the wood base in a number of places. The person I spoke with was very honest that this is a job they cannot do. However, he gave me some suggestions for the type of business that might be able to repair this for us. I really appreciated his suggestion, which was very helpful. We hired James to add a railing to our back porch. Part of the porch had a railing, but not all and with a little one we needed a railing for all of it. Our ask was to make the new railing match the existing one, so that they can be consistent. He gave me a range for the price that we agreed to. He showed up on time, we talked again briefly and then he set to work. I told him if he had any questions, I WFH, so please let me know, because we want to make sure that things are clarified. A couple of hours later, I went to check on him and I saw that the posts of the railing were unevenly spaced - most of them were equidistant, but the last couple on each side were half the distance then the rest and very clearly stood out. This is not how our existing railing is built - on either our front or back porches. I asked James and he said this was "industry standard" and to have them spaced equally he would have had to do some calculations, so he just spaced all of them based on the max allowed by code except for the last ones that landed where they did. Since he had already built quite a bit of the railing, it would require taking apart some of it to fix and he would rather not. We talked about it and we settled on him moving just 2-3 posts on each part of the railing so that it is visually harder to tell that they are not evenly spaced. I did the calculations, so he would know where to put the posts. He did so and then he took care to sand things nicely (I had not asked him to do this), charged me the top of the range he had given me and he said he wouldn't work for me again because I am too particular. Overall, the result (after he moved the posts) looks good and has held up well. I can confidently say that the quality of what he built is good. However, the experience was incredibly frustrating - from not clarifying when he noticed that things wouldn't look even; to claiming something was "industry standard" when our existing railings would beg to differ; to using the excuse of having to do calculations for why he had done a poor job; to finding our request to fix things too particular. read more

I asked James to add sliders to some shelves in lower cabinets so that I could use them better. He also added some pulls to those shelves to make them easy to use. He cleaned up after himself and did a great job. I would hire him again! Great work! read more

I hired James with MTC Handyman after inquiring about another job. He had referred me to a very good option. When it came time (way overdue, btw) for me to get the hinges replaced on my old European cabinets I knew he was the one to handle the job. He told me what kind to get as the hinges aren't made any longer, bonus they were soft-close hinges. I have had others try to help me with this job, and it wasn't successful. Not only did James do an amazing job refitting the new hinges (some had actually broken off) he corrected the spacing even better than before. I really cant thank this company enough. My husband and I are relocating (military) and bought a house in the area. We were so excited because it was our first house together, we signed the papers and woke up at 4am the next morning to the police letting us know someone had broken into the home. :( I had to get the home secured, fast and from an entire ocean away.
