I googled "where to buy wakeboards in Calgary" and Shuswap Ski & Board popped up. I wasn't sure what to expect but...you have to trust the Google, right? I'm glad I did! I arrived and was immediately greeted and asked if they could help. I said I was looking for a wakeboard for my husband. They guided me through the selection process by asking questions about his skill level, weight, shoe size, etc. I mentioned that I liked a certain brand (b/c I'd heard him mention it) so they showed me the best option in that line for his skill level....even though it wasn't the most expensive one. When I asked about that one, they said "Nope, this one is the one he needs!" I love it when the most expensive thing isn't the "right answer" because of the price! The store is quite small but there is a LOT of gear there including paddle boards, PFDs, skis and ropes. I am planning a trip back to talk about buying a paddle board!

We had been all over the city and had searched to no avail. But can you believe that of all the places we searched, Sport Chek is the one that actually delivered?!?!? Sport Chek stores now have a GNC nutrition store inside of them (most Sport Chek stores that is) and this one happened to be one of them. I found the prized protein powder I had been looking for and ended up buying two huge bins because they had a 'buy 1, get 1 50% off' promotion running. Plus I went ahead and bought a GNC Gold card from this location and I ended up getting two huge bins of the protein powder for less than the cost of what one would normally cost me!!! The service was a little flaky however, so the store loses 1 star. That aside, a very happy and productive shopping experience!

I brought them back only to be fitted into boots that were too small and much to my big piggie's dismay, this season the same thing happened. I have been told by two different stores that the second pair of boots that I got from Sport Chek were too small, and when I called the store manager at Market Mall I was asked if I had cut my toenails. I'm not an expert on ski equipment, but when I go to a retailer that is probably one of the biggest stores in Canada for this kind of stuff and am told after two attemtps at getting fitted into the right sized boot that I should keep up on my foot hygiene, I'm ready to declaire to the internet world that the customer service at this retailer is a joke. Take your business to a mom and pop store that actually knows what they're talking about. I know I will in the future.

The crew at Abominable were not only knowledgeable, they were absolutely fantastic in working with us to understand our needs, and work to deliver for us. McKayla and Chelsea at the front end got us sorted at the front end with clothes, helmets, and goggles, while Randy worked patiently with us on the skis and boots. All parties answered our questions and provided us with the understanding to assure we were getting what we needed. Once the items were selected, it was turned around super quick to get us back to the ski hill. We both ended up with new Elans and they rock!! Thank you Abominable for taking such great care of us. Staff was always friendly. It can be busy at times, so expect a couple days to have bindings set etc.

When there was some harness fraying a couple of months later, they didn't hesitate to fix the problem. Not only did I receive excellent customer service, but I could see other customers being treated the same way. This isn't a place to go if you are looking for the cheapest equipment on the market. This is where you go if you want to speak with people who know what they are selling, will take the time to answer your questions, and will stand behind their products. I spent the last month researching all things mountain bikes - I bought my last bike in 2001... it's been quite the learning curve. Bikes are in limited supply in Calgary, and some shops are using the global scarcity as a way to pressure a purchase, or at the least, get a 30% deposit. I restarted my search a month ago, beginning at Pure. Great experience. I demoed a couple different bikes. Then, I demoed two more bikes at CC Bow Trail (not so positive - more interested in making a sale than helping me), and then another demo at a Bowness shop (very positive experience). Yesterday, having narrowed down my search, I went back into Pure. Coming in at 5:30pm (they close at 6pm) didn't phase them. Cole was the sales rep and treated me great, as did other guys who helped me choose some pedals. The store was closing, and here Cole is offering me a demo ride. Even though I was somewhat certain about my purchase, Cole never once rushed me or the sale. It was around 6:30pm when I paid for the bike - 30min past closing. Big thanks to the guys at CC Pure. Helpful, patient, kind... and one happy customer with a new Santa Cruz Bronson + new set of clip-in pedals. Sincere gratitude for all the help.
