We spotted an unassuming Mexican cafe called El Kanelo (Cinnamon) on 729 N. First Street, and stopped in, not confident we would like the place & food. We were swiftly seated in a large booth, ordered water with lemmon (for which we weren't charged) and were brought crispy chips and fresh, home-made, chunky red salsa. The decor was traditional Mexican with dark wooden benches and tables adorned with colorful Mexican pottery back boards. My wife ordered the Steak (strips) Fajita dish ($15.99) and I ordered the Camarones Al Mojo De Ajo (suateed shrimp in garlic, olive oil and citrus juice) ($15.59). Both (large) dishes were brought out within 15 minutes sizzling hot, with richly seasoned aroma of lightly burned peppers. My shrimp was tender, not overcooked and smothered in richly flavored garlic butter. My wife's ample steak fajita's were served on a bed of onions, bell peppers (paprika) and piping hot yellow squash slices. If, like me, you are not a huge fan of pineapple, don't worry, the flavor is not overpowering, it adds a sweetness with just a hint. It's not overpowering, and it's easy to avoid the chunks of pineapple if you don't want to eat it on it's own. Our only issue was the bathrooms, they were dirty and didn't appear to be well maintained. The partitioned off area they were in was being used for storage making it hard to maneuver.
