That was ten years ago and Big Phil is happy as a clam and still doing his full retirement kingdom life thing with me. I've always wanted to own a Rhodesian Ridgeback aka The African Lion Hunters. The ridge is made up of hair running in the opposite direction upon their backs - "the more prominent the ridge, the better the hunters" or so the lore went. I met Julie Paul two and a half years ago, I came to see her beautiful dogs as I was interested in another Rhodesian, a female this time. These dogs have wonderful lives, each have their own large living situation, large piece of property to run around, galavant within - probably a few acres in total. Inside the dogs are part of the family all walking around living with the Paul family, it's like nothing I'd seen before, never having gone to a breeder, it was impressive to say the least. Tuesday I'm going to to see Julie again, a modest four and a half hour drive to pick up the newest edition to the family, iris's son Victor. I'm so excited!

Due to Covid-19 we were not allowed to visit the home to pick out or puppy or to meet the pup parents. Instead we met up with Robin at a park and she set up a pen in the grass for the puppies. We had our trusted family dog trainer with us who would assess the situation and the puppies to let us know if this was a good idea & which puppy would be closest to what we were looking for temperament/behavioral. The 3 females we had to choose from were all happy and friendly. There was another family there picking up a another puppy from this same litter as they had another doodle from a different litter from the same parents. That made me feel even more assured that we were making a great decision. BUT I contacted Karen, one of the owners and let her know that one of the pups will require bilateral hip replacement surgery due to GENETICS and she asked me who Mom was. How am I supposed to know who mom is?? I wasn't there when they were bred. Now, another thing to be cautious about the ONLY paperwork that we received was the shot information. I cannot even tell you if our puppies are F1 or F2 Goldendoodles, hind sight is awful and I now am aware of the many things I now know that I didn't know then. I wanted to let them know that they should no longer be breeding this mom and dad together going forward due to the major issues with the hips and she just couldn't wrap her head around it. All she kept telling me is that they have been doing this for 12 years and this is their first complaint. That may just be true, but if you do not know who mom is how many other issues are going to arise with the puppies being bred and sold and because it is hip dysplasia it isn't covered within the first 12 months of having pet insurance. I have a pet discount card, but even after the discount since I have only had my puppies for 10 months the imaging and pain meds were $814.00 and the treatment plan is between $2800-3400.00 PER HIP! And, I did reach out to the animal control in the area, but because the dogs aren't being abused and are being fed they cannot do anything to this place. It is a small infraction for them to not be licensed, which THEY ARE NOT licensed, not even a misdemeanor, small fine and they can continue to do what they are doing. What a nightmare. I did NOT know that there is a way to look breeders up on the BBB website to find a place that is reputable and has a rating from the BBB. Just a head's up. BEWARE.

Straight from the start she accused us of everything imaginable from taking dogs out of the cage ourselves (we didn't), to entering the back facility (which an employee brought us to). From there. She reviewed our application and demanded that we force our landlord to neuter his pure bred male dog. She kept yelling and demanding we neuter him and refused to consider our adoption request unless we did so. She said it was part of the application to have all dogs in the house hold spayed or neutered even though it said that no where in the detailed application. All in all our experience was abysmal. With the exception of Hannah who greeted us politely and was a pleasure to deal with.
