Words cannot describe the warmth and comfort of visiting this restaurant on a cold winter day, cuddled up next to their fireplace drinking some of the best hot chocolate you've ever had. Nothing will come close to comparing! We heard good things about the hot chocolate here and wanted to check it out for ourselves after being out in the cold all day. We chose the spiced hot chocolate, as recommended by our server. It was absolutely delicious-- rich, flavorful, creamy, and everything that a hot chocolate should be. Although the price was a bit steep, we had enough for 4 small cups and it came with two scones and whipped cream on the side. We also got two "biscuits", which we thought were going to literal biscuits, but ended up being small pastries which were both tasty! We were lucky enough to snag the seats right next to the fireplace which ended up being the perfect way to spend an hour hanging out. We ended up coming back for a light dinner the same day and also really enjoyed our time. There was a live pianist performing which really elevated the dining experience. We started things off with some oysters, which honestly were some of the best I've had in a very long time. The dipping sauce was a bit strange and untraditional for me, but it was perfect with just a bit of lemon juice. We also got a burger to share, and when they accidentally brought out a side salad instead of the fries we requested, they let us keep the salad and brought a huge entire order of truffle fries for us (!!!) Canadians really have some of the best fries too because these were perfectly crispy and honestly didn't even need dipping sauce. The burger also didn't disappoint and was savory goodness. I wish we tried this place sooner! Would highly recommend, even if you're not staying at the hotel itself. read more

Having stayed at the hotel, we had the opportunity to try Artefact twice. We tried the following items: Garden salad (5/5) Burger (5/5) Fries (5/5) Arctic charr (3/5) Lasagna (5/5) Duck toast (4/5) Bread and butter (5/5) The food was delicious, almost across the board (the fish was just average). If you are staying at the hotel, you might want to opt for room service instead of dining at the actual restaurant. Whereas room service took 20-25 minutes from order call to delivery, it took nearly 20 minutes just to get our order in when dining in. Our stay at the restaurant ended up taking more than 90 minutes, which is telling considering we are very fast eaters. To be fair, we arrived Christmas Eve afternoon right when their afternoon tea service had just ended. Still, though tables were open, and the staff did not seem prepared to accommodate guests. For what it's worth, we ordered room service just the day before around 6PM. If given the option, I would rate Artefact 3.5 stars. Dirty silverware made me round down. TL;DR Great food. Decent prices. Service may be slow. read more

My wife and I were on our way to the Frontenac Hotel Bar while my in-laws were babysitting our 9 month old. Halfway up the hill, they called saying our daughter was inconsolable, so back to our hotel we go. After putting her to sleep, we decided to go downstairs to Bar Artefact. It's quite the cozy hotel bar, sunken below but adjacent to the hotel lobby. They share the same cocktail menu as Chez Muffy (hotel's restaurant), so we were familiar with it. The Lily Sour (gin), Pisco de Rose (rose) and Tulum (mezcal) were all delicious. They also have draft beer from a Montreal brewery. The IPA du Nord-Est was pretty good. The kitchen was closed by the time we were at the bar. But I imagine the food should be good, judging by the meal we had at Chez Muffy (assuming they share the same kitchen). The waitress was kind enough to bring out some assorted nuts which paired well with the beer :). Overall a great hotel bar! read more

Love this cozy, delicious spot! Stayed at the gorgeous Saint-Antoine Hotel and didn't want to leave for dinner. This spot has fireplaces galore, an incredible Gin and Tonic with locally-made gin and herbs, such a delicious butternut squash soup with pumpkin seeds, a plump, juicy steak with homemade French fries, and the best pecan-maple pie I've had. At the end of the day Kevin makes a great Bloody Mary. The place is elegant and modern with a nice energy. The hostess, thin brown hair with arm tattoos, left a lot to be desired scolding us when we walked in stating "we stand over here till someone seats us". Nice ambience but both service and food were very poor. I can best describe it as pretentious and overpriced. Ordered drinks which came quickly, and food which didn't. When we ordered, we were the only table seated in the restaurant. Ordered oysters and charcuterie board as starters and a Silver Burger. Asked for the burger to be cooked no more than medium and was told it wouldn't. In an empty restaurant, it took almost 30 minutes for apps to arrive. Oysters were fine, but charcuterie board was very non-traditional (weird) in that it had two types of hard sausage and a flaked/formed meat with gelatin. There was also a small portion of cranberry sauce and a very odd combination of fruit and nuts. Cheeses were fine, but largest portion was goat cheese. Since there was no description in the menu regarding what meats or cheese was included, we incorrectly assumed it would be traditional. We should have asked. We noticed that virtually everything on the menu had ingredients that were very unusual, and the descriptions were a bit pretentious. When our apps arrived, the bread on the charcuterie board was hard as a rock due to being severely overtoasted/baked. We asked for softer toast or bread but were told we had to order the $10 bread and butter dish if we wanted something else. After an hour and a half, I asked why the hamburger was taking so long, which was over an hour after finishing our apps (with empty plates still sitting on the table having never been cleared). The server replied there were many people in the restaurant. I replied that nobody was in the restaurant when we had originally ordered. He then said chef preparation took time. I replied it was a hamburger. I then asked for it to be packaged to go, and 15 minutes later it arrived with both top and bottom buns burned and the burger overcooked to the point of being a virtual hockey puck in texture. I was told later by hotel staff that there had been a lot of staff turnover in the Artefact and this may have been the issue. Fortunately for us, we used our in-house credit as hotel guests to pay for the meal. Despite having over $30 in credit remaining for the rest of our stay, we never returned. As my wife said, we wouldn't eat there again, even if it was free. read more

We stopped in the lobby of the Auberge Saint Antoine because someone had recommended the Relais & Chateau property over the Fairmont and we wanted to put eyes on it to put it on the list for a return trip to Quebec. We discovered their lobby bar/cafe Cafe Des Artefacts. Much to our surprise we found the most enticing bar on our entry. It's as posh as the hotel with two cozy fireplaces in antechambers. The $17 pot of homemade hot chocolate may sound pricey but it's the perfect warm up after touring the low town. We enjoyed a quick bite of a "grilled cheese" and smoked duck sandwich. It's also immediately next door to the musee la civilisation so it's a convenient add on to a hot spot already on your itinerary. read more

I am staying at the hotel which we love, and was so tired to go out again after a long day of walking. Came down to the bar to have a simple glass of wine, and a charcuterie dish. It took almost 40 minutes for this dish to arrive, the meat looked old, and it did not look that appetizing. The wait staff completely did not acknowledge we did not touch it, and still charged us. Cocktails are horrible, and we constantly heard guests complain about the terrible service, and the bad food. Stay away! read more

Wanted something simple, so I had a burger and a glass of wine in the hotel Bar Artefact for dinner. The burger here was very good, as was the wine, and I thought it was a good value for the price. There was a man playing guitar and a woman singing in the bar, and they were very good too. I would recommend this place for a quick bite in the lower town. read more

We felt that the main restaurant was too formal for what we wanted so we had dinner in the bar. The food exceeded our expectations - delicious salad, fantastic corn chowder, delicious risotto - great background music and service. I would highly recommend. *There are two lovely and private fireside small tables off to each side of the bar.
