We first getting here, we saw photos of the spot being in an old castle and the are serving traditional Netherlands food, but the menu itself didn't really reflect that. The inside was completely empty while they seated most folks outside in the patio. We initially wanted to sit inside for the vibes but not a big deal (it was a nice day out). Food was so/so. The presentation was nice but the flavor wasn't all there. The staff needed to be flagged down for service and in general were kind, might not have been equipped for a large group (even though we made a reservation ahead of time. The deconstructed beef tartare was OK, but the meat was pretty one note. Fries were good. Would not recommend the pork belly - covered in a too sweet, sweet & sour sauce and was tough. Burger looked great, but a little dry. Not sure I would come back, but could be a good spot for small bites. read more

I'll give it five stars with the caveat that I went here for a beer and a snack, and sat outside... so I didn't get the full haunted ghosts dining experience. The weather was beautiful on this April day. I had been walking around aimlessly, like a vagrant in search of his muse, confused, each passerby as much as stranger as the next, in desperate need of sustenance for the journey ahead. The "Waag Crostinis" is *exactly* the amount of food and the taste that I was looking for. Raw meat, raw fish, white stuff.... how can you go wrong? Paired with a large beer, I was very happy. The sun was shining, that might make some happy, but it's a miracle I didn't fizzle into ashes. What a great place to eat in Amsterdam. The service staff was exceptional and were able to cater to our kids dietary needs. The atmosphere is great, though a bit dark. For the food, we ordered bitterballs for an appetizer, a must when in The Netherlands. They were very crispy, smoking hot even after sitting on the table for some time. My wife loved her parsnip soup, but her salad (and my mom's) were extremely overdressed with salad dressing. My steak was perfectly cooked and the kale was phenomenal. read more

Cafe In de Waag was too cool looking of a restaurant to pass up, so my friends and I decided to stop in here for a few snacks and a drink. How often do you get the chance to eat inside of a crazy looking castle? Not often, at least in Los Angeles. Originally built in 1488, this historical building is quite impressive and sure to catch your attention should you walk by. The interior is equally impressive, with lots of seating. The restaurant was actually at capacity when we arrived, so we chose to sit and drink at the bar located right by the front door. To eat, the three of us split fries, mac and cheese, and steak tartare. I didn't try much of the fries, but I thought the mac and cheese and steak tartare were both decent. Nothing to rave about, but they did satisfy. The steak tartare was beautifully presented. The bartender was nice and quite the beer pourer. I was impressed. If looking for a cool place to grab some food, Cafe In de Waag is a great option. The atmosphere and ambiance are truly hard to beat. This restaurant definitely offers a unique experience. I found this cafe while researching options for lunch online. I decided to stop by on my way to a tour, which was probably my mistake. I had about an hour and a half to eat, but it took 15 min to order and I literally sat there for 40 min before even getting my drink. My food took 1h15min leaving me 15min to scarf everything down and pay. I'm pretty sure the food was decent, but honestly I ate it so quick I don't really remember. I think this place could be okay, they weren't packed when I went there so I think the service was just slow. If that's not something you mind, or you're not in a rush, then I would say give this place a try! read more

I would avoid this pub/restaurant at all costs. I only stopped in for a draft. The beer I had was terrible. I'm not sure if it was the Brewery or if the keg was flat. Either way, it was not good. The worst thing was the Flies/Gnats flying around. In my beer, in my face, it was gross. They charges €5 for a .2 liter beer. That is highway robbery! Wonderful outdoor seating in the Nieumarkt square with umbrella covered or uncovered seating. Even though it was in the main square it had a cozy feel to it. The service was friendly and prompt! We had the ham sandwich and the salmon sandwich. Both were tasty and hit the spot to help us continue our sight seeing! read more

This location was awesome... not meaning the block from the red light, but the fact that it looks like an old church/castle. The rooms are amazing. Café In de Waag was unlike any other restaurant I have been to. The restaurant building is located in a historical building, originally known as the "Weigh House". The Weigh House was built in 1488 and the exterior has a cool, castle-like character. Inside the restaurant the atmosphere is informal and romanticly lit in candle light from the 300 candles scattered around the interior. There are multiple levels and private rooms in the restaurant. Café In de Waag not only has amazing atmosphere, but the restaurant also has delicious food. We visited for a late lunch and enjoyed the Beef Croquette Sandwich, Smoked Salmon Salad, and the Tomato Soup. Of course we had to order French Fries with ketchup and mayonaise since Europeans eat mayonaise with their fries. Weird combination, but it works! I'm not a big mayonaise eater so I don't think I would order this at home, but it was nice to try and say I've eaten this once. The best part of our lunch besides the cool atmosphere and tasty food was the reasonable prices. Would definitely come back here. They have a cool bar area that I'd recommend checking out. The salmon was very delicious and cooked juuuuust right. Fries are always delicious (haven't had bad frites in Amsterdam yet). The beef I feel like was lacking a bit in flavor, though I couldn't really put a finger on why..was it grilled? No? The cut of beef maybe? Ravioli was also okay, though I wasn't a fan of the sauce too much--seemed slightly tangy to me. I personally would stick with the salmon, which was very delicious. read more

For our last night in Amsterdam, my boyfriend and I wanted to check out the Red Light District. Since Cafe in de Waag was on his list of places to try, and it happened to be in the neighborhood, we made a resso for two. The restaurant itself looks like a castle. From the outside, you wouldn't think it was a restaurant. Once inside, it's perfect for a date. It's quiet, but not too quiet. It's dark, but not too dark. What I liked about their menu was that they had a recommended wine OR beer pairing with each of their entrees. Most places just do wine pairings. We went with the beer since we're beer drinkers. We also decided to order a pint of Heineken, because when in Amsterdam, right? I don't normally like Heinekens when I drink them back in the U.S., but I actually enjoyed this one. It tasted crisper. Must be something in the water here. To start, we had the North Sea crab with nagelhout (smoked meat), old Reypenaer (Dutch cheese) oranges and walnuts. It was weird. There were too many flavors going on - salty, tart, nutty. My taste buds were very confused. There was also not much crabmeat so I can't really speak on whether or not that was fresh. For my entree, I ordered the Dutch beef (from the charcoal grill - "Opperdoes" - asparagus - lemon-thyme gravy). It was cooked perfectly (medium-rare) and even though I don't normally like asparagus, the white asparagus they served was really good. For his entree, he went for the Dutch piglet (cooked with hay - potato truffle mousseline - crispy garlic - smoked garlic sauce). I don't usually order pork because most places make it super dry, but this restaurant was the complete opposite. It was tender and I ended up liking this dish better than my own. So the common theme with Cafe in de Waag is - order something that you normally wouldn't order/like, and you might end up loving it. read more

This place is the oldest non-religious place in Amsterdam. It's older than the UNITED STATES! Built in 1488 it's the place Henry Hudson sailed from here back in his day. We spent our time at the bar wit Daan who was hilarious. He served us warm drinks and we talked about politics, art, sex shows, marijuana and gun laws etc. We made a real connection. Our experience was unique and as authentic as it could be. The fries were great but the drinks were better!..and not too expensive. I come here with my friend, every time I'm in Amsterdam, which is 4-6 times per year. The food is good, and there's an interesting menu, if limited. Beware; the portions are huge, and the execution is very Dutch; ie lots of cheese!! The setting is brilliant, and the terrace in the summer is very very nice. read more

The restaurant is housed in an old historic building and is mainly lit inside by candles. Very neat ambiance. I started with the Pata Negra which was fantastic. For the main course I had the Dutch steak which had great flavor and a baked potato hasselback style. It was very yummy! Another in the party had the eggplant lasagna and I had a couple bites of it and it had great flavor. My dad had the filet of lamb and a salad and he said it was tasty. Lastly, mom mother had the hamburger and it was huge. She said it was good perfectly. I'd recommend a dinner here just don't be in a hurry. It took ya about 2.5 hours on a Friday night. read more

This was our second visit to In De Waag...we enjoyed our first meal so much we decided to see if it was a fluke, especially given some of the lukewarm reviews. I'm happy to report that our second meal was as good as the first and we will continue to count this as one of our favorites in a city of really good eats. The outside as well as the inside: high ceilings, bricks, huge old chandelier lighting up the room with dozens of real candles (!!!). ou can even witness the change of the candles! The cafe is an old castle type building which was just fun to experience. We went with a group of 8 and had a personal room off to the side. The chandelier was very impossible, boasting candles and really complimented the castle very well. The food was definitely a 5 out of 5 stars! I had the crab appetizer, the duck entree, and the fruit dessert. Every course was delightful. The only reason that I have a 4 out of 5 rating was because we seemed a bit forgotten in our private room. At some point, I walked out and found one of the our waitresses because it had been so long since we had seen anyone. It looks like quite a few reviews mention the same issue. We had a 9 p.m. reservation, but arrived at 9:45 p.m. because our arriving plane was late. Worth a visit if you don't have the obnoxious waiter.... this review would have been 4 stars if it wasn't for our experience with our waiter. We had a reservation for 6 people for lunch and it was such a beautiful day that we decided to sit outside instead of enjoying the cool interior. The first person who I dealt with was the manager and he was super friendly and knew exactly who I was when I told him we had a reservation. He directed me to speak to the waiter outside who would help us with our table. The first interaction with the waiter was, unfortunately, the tone he would take with us for our entire time at Cafe In de Waag. The waiter was rude, obnoxious and completely aloof to us. I asked him for the check after and he went over to his station and had a bite to eat and we had to physically get up and ask him for the check again until eventually he finally stopped eating and standing around and brought it to us. The service was so horrible I spoke to the manager about it because he RUINED our experience at Cafe In de Waag. To be clear the manager was NOT the problem, he was lovely and understanding to our issue with the waiter. The food was actually better than we were expecting since it feels very touristy so we didn't actually have high hopes. Our next trip to Amsterdam I hope to have the opportunity to change my review to 4 stars. read more

Finally made it to this restaurant. The interior is nice and feels homey. Beautiful chandeliers! Service was friendly enough for Amsterdam (at first I did feel like I was expected to apologize for disturbing the waitress by placing an order but she seemed to eventually have figured out that taking orders is part of the job). The food was just mediocre - at best. I'm no stellar cook but the whatever-was-in-my-fridge-that-I-threw-in-a-pan for lunch was better than the 50€ dinner I had here. Might go back for a drink on the terrace in the summer but food-wise it's a better investment to go to Portugal or Italy and have a meal there. read more
