We had dinner reservations booked here for 8 pm on a Sunday evening. My phone died during the river cruise, and the tour ran late so we arrived at our dinner reservation behind schedule. I asked if they had any availability or if we could join the waiting list, and the owner was incredibly rude. He scolded me, saying he didn't care that my phone was dead and that I should have found another way to call. The restaurant's name is in Dutch, so I didn't even remember the name in order to ask around, and I had spent thirty minutes trying to find a restroom with no luck in finding a charger prior to arriving. Thankfully, the rush-hour crowd seemed to have cleared out, and we were seated after waiting only a few minutes. I shared the split pea soup and "Grandmother's Stew," a traditional Dutch dish made with mashed potatoes, beef, carrots, Brussels sprouts, and green beans. While everything was fresh, I have to admit I understand why Dutch cuisine isn't particularly renowned. The place was busy. It was a comfortable atmosphere. Authentic Amsterdam cuisine at its finest! My friend and I made a reservation in advance for this place after seeing all of the good reviews. The inside gives a homelike feel where you know you will be well taken care of! The service was friendly and timely. I had the mussels and they were exquisite! Perfectly cooked and accompanied by a wonderful balance of sauce and mushrooms. It came with fries and salad which were good but not spectacular. For dessert, we shared the apple pie that came a la mode with this deliciously sweet cinnamon ice cream! The pie itself had a great flavor but was a little on the dry side. I really wanted to try traditional Dutch food and was able to find this location on Yelp. We got there right at open - def make a reservation! They got busy as we were there. The waiter was super nice and explained the dishes to us when he set it down which I appreciated! We started with bread and butter. The butter was deliciously seasoned. The bread was very good also. Freshly baked. I ordered the stewing steak - it came with the beef in a dish and then a plate of mashed potato's, green beans, carrots, Brussels, and a side of apple sauce. It was explained to take the beef and like it over the veggies to eat. It was a huge portion. I enjoyed it! Good thing I used Google translate because the email was in Dutch. Our friend recommended Zwaantje for traditional home style Dutch entrees. We shared the Grandma's stew which comes with a plate of vegetables along with mashed potatoes and apple puree. We also got the pork satay that comes with a side salad and fries. Grandma's stew was so tender and delicious. Our waiter informed us that back in the days every Dutch grandma would know how to make this dish, and this is still their family's recipe. The pork satay came with a generous amount of peanut sauce and it was soooo delicious! The pork was juicy and tender. We simply couldn't eat much of the sides because the main entree's portion was quite big. The mayo/aioli that comes with the fries was super addicting. This place presents itself as a cozy "brown cafe" with local Dutch food and a friendly family run atmosphere. Reality is close but a bit different - it is a good-ish local Dutch restaurant but with some service and hygiene issues. We came here upon recommendation of the concierge and had a reservation and were seated promptly. We did see some others come in without reservations and they were promptly and firmly turned away, so you definitely need the reservation. We started with some smoked salmon and it was very nice and fresh, with some bread and spreads, capers, onions, etc. I had the Grandma's stew as the main and it was pretty good although not great. It came with a large plate of vegetables and mashed potatos and a separate large dish of stew. The vegetables and mashed potatos didn't have much taste but the stew itself was good. The reason I say good but not great is I had a similar dish, a Flemish beef stew in Antwerp a few nights before and the flavor of the meat and sauce blew away Grandma's dish. Ambiance is cozy casual inside. We had a nice dinner conversation with the next table (which was very close - two tops are placed literally only a few inches from each other so you are essentially dining with your neighbors - and luckily they were very nice people.) Using old shag carpets as table clothes and placemats doesn't seem appropriate or something that looks good or is in any way hygienic - when is the last time those carpets which the food dishes are placed on were washed (if ever)? The service could use more professionalism in general. The all young male waiters all wear graphic or band t-shirts and some sported large gold chains. At least an all black shirt would look a bit more professional. During our time there I saw one waiter in the middle of the dining area pull up the bottom of his t-shirt to wipe his nose, like a child might on a playground. This is not what you expect to see from a restaurant food service professional who will be serving your food. Service by the various waiters was fairly timely with the check-ins and delivery of food, but a bit haphazard. When I went to pay the bill at the end at the bar, I was subject to a fairly aggressive shake down for tips by the owner/bartender. A bit off putting and I'm sure something the locals don't have to endure. So, mixed review, probably alright if you're a local or don't mind their issues... There must be better options. read more

The stew was fantastic. It's a large dish and could honestly be for 2 people. It's the perfect meal with protein, mashed potatoes, vegetables and a sweet and tart apple puree. The mussels were tasty. Again, as we do every year, dinner during our annual business trip to amsterdam. It's that good. The menu is substantial but it's the fish and lamb that does it for us. After a long day, if you want to have a good meal with great people then you need to come here! We came here after football game. Emiel made magic happen to get us in without a reservation. All of the staff came by the table at some point to tell a funny story or hang out to talk, but never interfered. While in a foreign country, we felt like we were at a friend's house for dinner. We popped in around 5 pm without a reservation to see about getting a table- we were told by one of the guys serving (no formal host) that they were fully committed and there was other food around the area. It felt a little off-putting - like he didn't want us there because we were tourists. So we went online after leaving to discover that they had a few open reservations for later that evening. *We were determined to have a true dutch meal upon our visit and this is definitely one of the few places in the city that offers that. We enjoyed the escargot, cordon bleu and the Grandma's beef stew. All were really tasty and a hearty portion size. The apple pie was pitched as their best desert, but without the ice cream and creme, it would have been very dry. The server who discouraged us from coming back warmed up by the end of the night - which we think is worth mentioning. We got the sense they appreciate a dutch/local clientele. Zwaantje is a small restaurant serving traditional Dutch food. As they explain on their website, they started as a cafe and evolved into what it is now. Good portion sizes, low prices. As a tourist, I would say the food is interesting, and the place is friendly enough for tourists. For example, they take Visa and don't charge an extra fee for that. I would recommend getting a reservation. It can get crowded, and there isn't much of a waiting area. They tell you to be on time for your reservation, but they are punctual as well, so that's fair enough. read more

It was sheer luck we came here and got a table! Our group of 3 had been hanging out at the W Lounge at the W Hotel near Dam Square and one of our group had never eaten traditional Dutch Food. So checked for places that were within a 10-15 min walk from us and this restaurant popped up with its great reviews and also the fact that it was a "Brown" cafe! FYI if you are unaware, Amsterdam's brown café, aka "bruine kroeg" in Dutch, is a traditional ye olde-style pub with dark brown wood and heavily plastered poster walls. After ordering my favorite girly beer, a lemon Radler which was delicious and tart and sweet, we then decided to get the following menu items: 1) Paté of duck liver (€ 10.25) - So GOOD! The pate was smooth, creamy but had that tad light touch of game coming thru. 4 hearty pieces were served with a bread basket and lovely fresh salad on the side. There was a delicious jam that was just the perfect accompaniment to the pate. This dish is hearty and filling and delicious- Absolutely recommend! 2) Fried mushrooms with garlic on toast (€ 9.75) - Another winner on the menu! This is a Vegetarian dish and the serving is so massive, honestly it could be considered a main! A medley of chopped mushrooms are mixed with veggies and all of them tossed in a beautiful but earthy herb dressing. Quite tasty and delicious! 3) Two slip tongues (€ 17.75) - I ordered this based on the recommendation of the waiter as this fish is apparently local and popular. As part of this main course, I could also choose either French fries or fried potatoes and steamed vegetables or a mixed salad. I decided to get the fish with roasted potatoes and salad and omg! When these "side" items arrived, was not expecting them to be the big serving size the were!! The fish was cooked perfectly, my roast potatoes were tasty and perfectly crisp and the salad looked fresh and inviting. Unfortunately after the duck pate entree, I could do just to this meal and so asked if could get a doggy bag, which the luckily obliged me with (cause majority restaurants in the EU do not do takeaways!). 4) Stamppot ', 'endive', 'kale' or 'sauerkraut stew' with fried bacon and smoked sausage (€ 15) - my other two colleagues got this dish. One person in our group had it as a vegetarian option and both agreed that it was super tasty but very very hearty and perhaps a dish that should be shared! Our server and the overall staff were super friendly and very on point. It was easy to ask them to split the bill evenly three ways without any fuss, which we really appreciated as it made for an easy reckoning up for the dinner. Really yummy, traditional Dutch fare in a warm, comfortable atmosphere. I had the grilled prawns which were delicious but be forewarned, you have to shell them yourself which gets a bit messy. My husband had the spare ribs, which were a full rack and really, really good. They were so tender, the meat falls off the bone completely. His dish came with fries. Mine came with an assortment of veggies which I loved. We shared the chocolate mousse for dessert. It was so smooth and creamy, a bit different than American mousse which has a more airy texture. It was probably the best mousse I've ever had. The restaurant is popular so it can be crowded on weekends, especially during tourist high season, so make a reservation. While walking through the city and after not getting a table at the Modder's restaurant (by the way with rude personal at that day), which we promoted to us we found the little pearl! We wanted to eat something typical from the Nethderlands and we got it! After a very nice and warm welcome from the owner and as well the waiter we got a table at the open window to the street and we felt very happy there. They offer a special beer and vine card with local products and help you finding your best drink. We were a party on 4 and we took as main dishes 2 times the Suddervlees near "Oma's Recept" (Stewing steak according to a traditional dutch recepy), the Kip in 't pannetje met frites en salade (Simmered chicken served in a vegetable sauce with fries and salad) and one time a grilled salmon. As soon as I walked in it, it seemed like the gentleman behind the bar (maybe owner) was annoyed and didn't want to be bothered. Also, in my opinion, any place that doesn't want to serve tap water and forces customers to purchase bottle water, along with asking for a tip for service is just trying to squeeze more money out of tourist and take advantage. As far as the food goes, it was good and portion sizes were large. If you're in the neighborhood it's worth going to, otherwise there are plenty of other places to try that will be a better atmosphere for the high menu prices. read more

Amazing place, great food, and great service. Excellent value, a lot of food for a low price. The stewing steak is a must try, a traditional dutch dish and recipe. It's a bit salty, but balanced out by the cooked vegetables. Although there are a lot of complaints about the vegetables here, we got a salad and the cooked vegetables, and neither were bad. We got the daily special, duck, marinated in a wine and mushroom sauce, which was pretty good, and grilled salmon, also not bad. Nothing exceptional, though. Dessert was amazing. You must save room, especially for the apple pie, cinnamon ice cream, and Chantilly(that's one dessert!!!). We all loved it, a generous slice of pie, with two scoops of cinnamon ice cream in a a waffle bowl, and a dollop of cream. As my eleven year old daughter described, "Heaven on a plate." read more

We were looking for a classic Dutch supper and that is exactly what we found. As great as central Amsterdam is, there aren't many places that offer classic Dutch cuisine. The ambience is casual and homey. The decoration inside is nothing fancy and reassured me that we were at an actual classic home cooking restaurant and not a tourist trap. We all had the beef stew, I forget the exact name but it is their specialty and was highly recommended by the waitress. When it came we were presently surprised at how massive the plate was. The stew came in a large bowl and on a separate larger plate there were veggies mash and some slaw and from what we gathered the point was to put the stew over the veggies, kind of like a gravy. All together it was delicious and we were full and happily satisfied by the end. One small thing is to make sure you reserve in advance because we got very lucky and went for supper quite early. The guide books say that Dutch cuisine is nothing to right home about, but we wanted to try it anyway. Our B&B host recommended 't Zwaantje (the Cygnet) as a place for good, traditional Dutch food. Yes there are tourists there, but much of he crowd was Dutch. Let me just say that there's nothing wrong with Dutch food. It's just a bit old school and cooked fairly plainly. My wife had a perfectly cooked baked trout. If seasoned at all, it was only salt and pepper. I had mussels, cooked in a very simple broth with pretty raw veg (carrots and onions). But instead of a complex garlic sauce, they served the fairly plain mussels with sauces: one was kind of a garlic butter, one was mustard, one was a creamy herb dressing and one was like old Kraft French dressing. Served with a salad and French fries (which I suspect were store bought frozen ones). The menu had many other fish choices as well as chicken, steak, ribs, pork and beef stew. Our friends had the pork in mushroom sauce and a schnitzel and they were both good and what you would expect. So, good, traditional food in a home cooked style. read more
